Desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT), an aggressive malignancy classically seen in adolescents and young adults with a strong male predominance, is exceptionally rare in the ovary. We report a 33-year-old woman with ovarian DSRCT presenting as a pelvic mass and peritoneal metastases. Histopathology revealed small round cell nests within desmoplastic stroma, exhibiting atypical architectural patterns (single-file, follicular-like cystic, microcystic, and solid). Immunohistochemistry demonstrated coexpression of epithelial (pan-keratin) and mesenchymal markers (vimentin, desmin), while mo

Desmoplastic small round cell tumor is a very rare and highly aggressive soft tissue sarcoma, usually presenting with multiple intra-abdominal tumors in young males. Patients present with advanced disease and the overall survival is dismal. Multiple studies report relatively favorable outcomes with multimodal treatment consisting of chemotherapy, surgery and radiotherapy. If resection is feasible, complete cytoreductive surgery is the cornerstone of surgical treatment. The benefit of hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy in addition to cytoreductive surgery is unclear, and few studies have

The clinical and histological features of 39 cases of desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) diagnosed at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center are presented. Thirty-two of the patients were men and seven were women ranging in age from 10 to 41 years (mean, 25 years). Twenty-five of the 35 patients for whom follow-up information was available died of widespread metastases 8 to 50 months (mean, 25.2 months) from the time of their diagnosis and the remaining 10 were alive with disease. With the exception of two cases that occurred in the liver and in the scrotum, respectively, all of the cases origin

Desmoplastic small round cell tumors (DSRCT) are highly aggressive tumors typically involving the serosal surfaces of the peritoneum. Patients often present with abdominal pain, an abdominal mass, ascites or signs of intestinal obstruction. Cytogenetic and molecular studies have identified a characteristic t(11;22)(p13;q12) translocation within the tumor cells. The fused gene product apparently aligns the NH2-terminal domain (NTD) of the EWS gene to the zinc finger DNA-binding domain of the WT1 gene. This product could lead to loss of the tumor suppressor effect of the WT1 gene as well as to a

Desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) is a rare and aggressive soft tissue sarcoma that predominantly affects young adults. We present the case of a 25-year-old African American male with a recent diagnosis of advanced DSRCT. The patient initially had a prolonged period of nonspecific abdominal symptoms for over a year before he was diagnosed. The patient presented with abdominal pain, abdominal bloating, ascites, constipation, and back pain. Upon admission, imaging studies revealed extensive peritoneal carcinomatosis, a large pelvic mass, and metastatic spread to the lung and lymph node

OBJECTIVES: When desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) is present in serous fluid, the cytomorphology can be diverse and can mimic metastatic carcinomas and thus present a diagnostic challenge. The aim of this study was to evaluate the cytomorphologic and immunocytochemical features of this rare tumor in serous effusion specimens.
METHODS: Demographic, clinical, radiologic, and pathologic information from patients who had a DSRCT diagnosis on body fluid specimens was collected and cytologic slides were reviewed.
RESULTS: Nine specimens were identified (5 pleural fluid and 4 ascitic flu

BACKGROUND: Desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) is a rare and aggressive malignancy commonly involving the abdomen and/or pelvic peritoneum. Despite aggressive therapy, the prognosis remains poor. Central nervous system relapse is rare in abdominal/pelvic primary DSRCT.
OBSERVATION: We report a case of a 10-year-old female with a large pelvic DSRCT and involvement of the rectosigmoid colon and liver. Following treatment with chemotherapy, and cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy an initial response was noted. With progressive lower limb weakness, recurr

We report a case of a 49-year-old female with desmoplastic small round cell tumor of the uterus (DSRCT). Histologically, in some areas the tumor showed typical features with ample desmoplastic stroma, while in other areas the tumor cells diffusely infiltrated myometrium with only focal desmoplastic reaction. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells showed diffuse positivity for desmin, CD56, CD57, EMA and cyclin D1. Focal positivity was present for antibodies against cytokeratin AE1/3, BerEP4, NSE, IFITM1 and CD10. The WT-1 antibody (against the N-terminus) showed cytoplasmic positivity in some

OBJECTIVE: Desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) is a rare intraabdominal neoplasm that grows along serosal surfaces and is primarily found in young men. To date, only 16 cases of ovarian DSRCT have been previously reported in women in the English literature, and no large population-based studies on this topic exist.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 19-year-old virgo with unremarkable past medical history, initially presented with abdominal fullness. After being treated with the optimal treatment modality (primary and secondary surgical debulking, unique chemotherapy, protocol and a

BACKGROUND Desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) is a rare lethal malignant tumor with young male predominance. The majority of cases arise in the abdominopelvic region and are hypothesized to have a mesothelial origin. However, extra-abdominal and extraperitoneal DSRCT have been reported. It is extremely uncommon for the pancreas to be a primary site for DSRCT, and only 5 cases have previously been reported in the English literature. Clinically, DSRCT has a wide range of presentations from asymptomatic to life-threatening comorbidity, and it responds poorly to treatment despite aggressi

Desmoplastic small round cell tumor is a rare malignant neoplasm mostly occurring in the vicinity of or within the peritoneal cavity, and is uncommon in the head and neck region. Tumor location within a major salivary gland is exceptional. We report a case of a 41-year-old Chinese man with a history of diabetes mellitus and end-stage renal failure on peritoneal dialysis with a desmoplastic small round cell tumor occurring in the left submandibular gland. Fine-needle aspiration cytology showed variably cohesive clusters of small cells with hyperchromatic nuclei and fine granular chromatin. On h

PURPOSE: We report computed tomography (CT) findings in 13 patients with a primary abdominal desmoplastic small round cell tumor.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 13 cases (12 men, 1 woman, mean age=24.8 years) were found in our hospital database between 1991 and 2003. Clinical, CT and histopathological features were studied retrospectively.
RESULTS: Peritoneal involvement was the most common feature. In 10 cases, several lobulated peritoneal soft tissue masses (with a mean of four masses per patient) were seen. Two patients had diffused irregular peritoneal carcinomatosis without any distinct periton

A 50-year-old male presented with neck and shoulder pain. Chest CT and 18F-FDG PET/CT revealed osteolytic bone destruction in the left first rib and thoracic vertebrae with increased FDG uptake. Rib biopsy pathology indicated desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT).18F-FDG PET/CT can accurately locate the distribution of DSRCT and further guide the location of needle biopsy to assist the DSRCT.

Desmoplastic small round cell tumor is a rare and aggressive neoplasm, primarily affecting serosal surfaces within the abdomen and pelvic peritoneum in young males. Because of a low reported incidence, underdiagnosis and lack of current treatment guidelines pose a unique challenge for physicians and patients dealing with this disease. Therefore, it is imperative to present new information regarding this disease so that better detection and treatment guidelines can be created. This case report presents a 30-year-old male presenting with vague abdominal symptoms, ultimately diagnosed with desmop

Desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) is a rare, aggressive pediatric malignancy, and optimal management remains challenging because most patients present with metastatic disease, and evidence guiding multimodal treatment is limited. We retrospectively reviewed 11 children with DSRCT treated at our institution between 2000 and 2023. Demographics, tumor characteristics, treatment modalities-including neoadjuvant chemotherapy, surgical resection, and intraoperative microwave ablation (MWA)-and outcomes were analyzed. Tumor burden was assessed using the Peritoneal Cancer Index (PCI), and su

INTRODUCTION: Desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) is a rare malignant mesenchymal neoplasm of polyphenotypic differentiation, characterized by EWSR1-WT1 gene fusion. Despite multimodality therapy, the tumor carries poor prognosis. We report cytomorphological, immunohistochemical (IHC) and molecular features of seven cases of DSRCT from four patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of cytology smears, biopsies and molecular features of cases diagnosed as DSRCT at Department of Pathology, Henry Ford Health System, and Indiana University, USA between 2016 and 2022 were per

OBJECTIVE: To report on a retrospective study of primary DSRCT aiming at characterizing long-term survivors (LTS).
METHODS: All consecutive patients treated at our institution for a primary DSRCT between 2000 and 2021 were retrospectively identified. Patients received multiagent chemotherapy ± surgery ± hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) ± whole abdomino-pelvic radiotherapy (WAP-RT) ± high-dose chemotherapy ± maintenance chemotherapy (MC). Event-free survival (EFS) and overall survival (OS) were estimated by Kaplan-Meier method. Patients alive, without evidence of disease at ≥3
