The nature of tooth enamel is of inherent interest to dental professionals. The current-day clinical practice of dentistry involves the prevention of enamel demineralization, the promotion of enamel remineralization, the restoration of cavitated enamel where demineralization has become irreversible, the vital bleaching of dental enamel that has become discolored, and the diagnosis and treatment of developmental enamel malformations, which can be caused by environmental or genetic factors. On a daily basis, dental health providers make diagnostic and treatment decisions that are influenced by t

Differentiating between fluorotic and non-fluorotic defects of dental enamel is an important diagnostic decision in epidemiology and public health dentistry. The commonly accepted diagnostic criteria for fluorosis discriminate between non-discrete symmetrical and asymmetrical distributions of opacities of dental enamel. These criteria appear to identify most cases of dental fluorosis. However, it is not yet confirmed that the pattern and distribution of dental fluorosis are a unique phenomenon. Metabolic, physiological, other trace elements, and malnutrition have been reported to induce bilate

Molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) describes a developmental enamel formation disorder caused by defective calcium and phosphate deposition by the ameloblasts during enamel matrix formation and enamel maturation. The first permanent molars are affected. The first permanent incisors may or may not be affected (Fig. 1, 2). The prevalence is 10 to 19%. The etiology of MIH is still unknown.

This study of linear enamel hypoplasia (LEH) in Plio-Pleistocene hominins builds on a previous study (Guatelli-Steinberg [2003] Am. J. Phys. Anthropol. 120:309-322) that focused on LEH in early South African hominins. The present study is more comprehensive, encompassing dental specimens of hominins from East Africa as well, including early Homo. As a developmental defect of enamel, LEH is used in anthropological contexts to reveal information about physiological stress. However, intrinsic aspects of enamel development and morphology can affect the expression of LEH, complicating efforts to un

The development of the human dentition is prone to disruption due to its delicate and complex nature - including variations in tooth number and anatomical form and in the characteristics of enamel, dentine, and cementum. This chapter will focus on developmental defects of dental enamel (DDE) and dentine (DDD), which can be associated with considerable treatment burden on an individual, often related to the change in dental hard tissue characteristics in those at increased caries risk. DDE are prevalent and can be related to genetic conditions such as amelogenesis imperfecta and environmental c

PURPOSE: Identifying factors causing Molar-Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH) is an ongoing challenge. Preterm infants, routinely treated with antibiotics in cases of suspected sepsis, are more commonly affected by dental developmental defects. This study aimed to investigate the effects of gentamycin and ampicillin on the developing enamel in neonatal CD-1 mice in vivo.
METHODS: Neonatal mice were randomized into a study (n = 36) and a control (n = 35) group. Antibiotics were injected intravenously for 4 days. All mice were sacrificed after 15-18 days. Micro-CT was used to analyse the mineral

Hypocalcification of the enamel is the most common developmental disorder observed in teeth. The prevalence of this kind of hypomineralisation is about 10-19%. These molars are often referred to as cheese molars, because the lesions clinically resemble cheese in color and consistency. Other descriptions are: idiopathic enamel hypomineralisation in the permanent first molars, idiopathic enamel opacities in the permanent first molars, non fluoride enamel hypomineralisation in the permanent first molars, non-endemic mottling of enamel in the permanent first molars. Molar-Incisor Hypomineralisatio

AIM: The purpose of this study was to investigate the presence of developmental defects of enamel on maxillary premolars in patients with cleft lip and/or palate. In addition, the relationship with the surgical technique of soft palate closure was studied. Such a relationship could be suspected since formation of enamel occurs around the same time period as soft palate closure.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study consisted of three groups. Patients from the first group (n = 123) were recruited from the Cleft Lip and Palate Team of the University Hospitals Leuven (CLPT-UHL). The second group (n =

BACKGROUND: The formation of enamel occurs across multiple developmental stages and is highly sensitive to disruptions in cellular signaling. Perinatal complications, preterm birth, and exposure to environmental chemicals are systemic factors known to contribute to developmental defects of enamel (DDE). These defects adversely affect normal oral physiological function and impact patients’ daily lives. The precise pathophysiology of DDE, however, remains unclear, complicating efforts at prevention. Consequently, elucidating the mechanisms through which environmental exposures lead to DDE is ess

Enamel pearls are developmental anomalies caused by enamel formation in atypical locations during tooth development. While the exact etiology of these developmental anomalies remains unclear, they occur in approximately 2-6 % of the population. In this case report, a 15-year-old female presented with pain in the region of the right maxillary first molar. Radiographic imaging showed a periapical radiolucency and an opaque mass in the furcation area. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) identified a round radiodensity consistent with an enamel-dentin pearl, which probably promoted the developmen

Background: Vitamin D deficiency rickets is a metabolic bone disorder caused by impaired calcium and phosphate homeostasis resulting from insufficient vitamin D. In children, severe vitamin D deficiency can disturb the mineralization of growing bones and teeth. Although the skeletal manifestations are well recognized, reports describing generalized developmental enamel defects affecting nearly all permanent teeth remain limited. Methods: A 6-year-9-month-old Japanese boy with a history of vitamin D deficiency rickets diagnosed at 2 years 5 months of age was referred to our department for evalu

The junctionalis form of epidermolysis bullosa (EBJ) is associated with a number of clinical problems involving tooth enamel, including increased susceptibility to caries. The aim here was to carry out a chemical characterization of the enamel of teeth from EBJ patients compared with that of unaffected controls. The results showed that while protein concentration, amino acid composition and carbonate content were similar in both groups, EBJ enamel contained a significantly reduced mineral per volume content, resulting in enamel hypoplasia. In addition, Western blotting revealed the presence of

The nature of deposits present in hypoplastic defects of fluorotic enamel of wild boar teeth was studied by light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The fluorotic enamel showed different developmental abnormalities, denoting a severe disturbance of ameloblast function during the secretory stage of amelogenesis. These abnormalities included the occurrence of grossly accentuated incremental lines with associated zones of aprismatic enamel and the presence of different forms of hypoplastic defects. Two types of deposits were present on the hypoplastic enamel: cellular cementum and poste
