Effects of Early Toilet Training and Elimination Communication With Respect to Diaper Types.

To investigate effects of diaper-free times, elimination communication (EC) and early toilet training, a web-based survey was conducted for caregivers. The more diaper-free times an infant experienced during day, the earlier it was toilet trained (P < .001), which was enhanced by the usage of cloth diapers. The amount of diaper-free times significantly reduced the caregiver's continuous sleep, the occurrence of rashes and balm usage (P < .001) and lead to a more regular defecation frequency. Cloth diaper usage had no effect on rashes or balm usage, but on diaper change rate (P < .001). We coul

Preventing Irritant Diaper Dermatitis: A Comparative Analysis of Diapering Practices in Turkey and Worldwide.

This study assesses the diaper choices, diapering practices, and irritant diaper dermatitis (IDD) prevention strategies in Turkey and compares them to the practices worldwide. A Computer-Assisted Web Interview was conducted with 306 mothers, nursing their infants between 0 and 3 years. The average daily diaper usage was 6.3, with a higher utilization during daytime. Concerningly, 44.4% of infants exhibited skin issues. In total, 63.7% of parents observed the occurrence of IDD during the first month, with 39.9% indicating its continued presence afterwards. The IDD predominantly affected the but

Diaper dermatitis prevalence and severity: Global perspective on the impact of caregiver behavior.

OBJECTIVES: To compare prevalence and severity of diaper dermatitis (DD) in infants and toddlers (babies) across three countries (China, USA, and Germany), including diapered skin measures and caregiver practices. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of 1791 babies (~600 from each country) was recruited at each clinical site. Based on regional toilet-training habits, exclusively diaper-wearing infants were recruited between ages 2-8 months in China and 2-18 months in the USA and Germany. DD was measured, as well as skin pH, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and relative humidity (RH) in the diape

Frequency and severity of diaper dermatitis with use of traditional Chinese cloth diapers: observations in 3- to 9-month-old children.

Chinese cloth diapers differ from disposable diapers in several respects that are central to our understanding of the etiology of diaper dermatitis (DD), yet there are no published reports on the dermatological correlates of this manner of infant care, which is prevalent among the world's second-largest pediatric population. The objective was to determine the prevalence and severity of DD in exclusive users of Chinese cloth diapers. This observational study was conducted during a single home visit to 694 Chinese children who were exclusive users of cloth diapers in five inland cities of China.

Urine samples from disposable diapers: an accurate method for urine cultures.

BACKGROUND: The method of collection of the urine sample is of paramount importance in making a diagnosis of urinary tract infection in infants and children. Squeezing urine out of disposable diapers can provide a urine sample that can be used to detect chemical abnormalities as well as a specimen suitable for microscopic examination. To date there have been no reported studies on the use of this technique for urine culture as compared with samples collected by suprapubic aspiration and catheterization. METHODS: Urine was obtained from 38 infants aged under 2 years who presented with fever wi

Diapers and diaper rashes.

The diaper-wearing population has expanded from infants and children to include adults, especially the elderly. Nurses caring for patients over a wide age range are commonly asked for advice about diapering choices, and for guidance in evaluation, prophylaxis, and treatment of diaper rashes. Two different diaper types, disposables and reusables, and the advantages and disadvantages of each are discussed. A systematic approach is presented for the nursing evaluation of common diaper rashes and their differentiation from rarer skin eruptions of the groin and perineum in diaper-wearing persons.

Candida--agent of the diaper dermatitis?

Occurrence of Candida spp. was determined in a population of 60 infants, 1-15-month-old, with diaper dermatitis, admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit in Hospital Saca (Kosice, Slovakia). Specimens were obtained from the perianal, pubic, inguinal, or gluteal areas that showed signs of secondary infection as manifested by erythema, oozing, vesiculopustular lesions, and pus formation. The most frequently isolated species was C. albicans (41), followed by C. parapsilosis (8), C. tropicalis (4), C. pulcherrima (4), C. guilliermondii (2), and C. zeylanoides (1). Other organisms present in the

Diaper dermatitis: a therapeutic dilemma. Results of a double-blind placebo controlled trial of miconazole nitrate 0.25%.

Diaper dermatitis, an acute inflammation of the skin in the diaper area, is the most common dermatologic disorder of infancy. This placebo-controlled, randomized, double-blind, parallel-group trial compared the efficacy and safety of miconazole nitrate 0.25% in a zinc oxide/petrolatum base with that of the ointment base alone in treating acute diaper dermatitis in infants and evaluated the role of Candida albicans in the response to treatment. Infants age 2-13 months with diaper rash were treated with either miconazole nitrate 0.25% (N = 101) or ointment base (N = 101) for 7 days. Although imp

Association of skin wetness and pH with diaper dermatitis.

The strength of the association between diaper dermatitis and measurements of skin wetness and skin pH was evaluated by statistical analysis of four diaper trials involving 1601 infants. Although the strength of the association between skin wetness and diaper dermatitis was greater than that between skin pH and diaper dermatitis, increases in wetness and pH were both significantly associated with elevated mean grades for diaper dermatitis. The skin environment least likely to be associated with diaper dermatitis is one in which increases in both skin wetness and skin pH are minimized.

Lady with Erotic Preference for Diapers.

A patient in her 20s was referred to us for psychological assessment due to her depression and suicide attempts. She mentioned being anorgasmic except when diapered and emphasized her erotic preference for diapers. Her childhood included maternal deprivation in an impecunious family headed by an irritable physically disabled father on social assistance. Given the maternal deprivation in childhood, her erotic fixation on diapers parallels the emotional attachment to diapers observed by Harlow in mother deprived infant monkeys. Etiological hypotheses should also include the paradigm of avoidance

Diaper performance: maintenance of healthy skin.

Skin wetness is proportional to diaper wetness, and with increased skin wetness, the potential for diaper dermatitis is increased. This study evaluated a wide range of infant diaper products. Eighty healthy volunteers wore 2-inch wetted diaper patches on their volar forearm for two hours. An evaporimeter was used to measure excess skin wetness attributed to the patches. The amount of moisture retained in the patch was also calculated. We found that superabsorbent (SA) disposable diapers kept the skin drier and retained more synthetic urine than cloth reusable and conventional disposable brands

An Adaptation of the Skin Safety Model to Guide Diaper Dermatitis Research in the NICU.

Diaper dermatitis is an ever-present condition among infants. Little is known about the prevalence among infants in the NICU. This article presents an adaptation of the skin safety model (SSM) for the infant in the NICU. The concepts of the model were extracted, defined, and integrated into an adapted SSM model to provide a focus on the infant with diaper dermatitis in the intensive care setting. It is essential to include all factors of the infant's clinical characteristics and hospital experience in the modeling to accurately predict risk of skin vulnerability in this infant population.

Improving newborn skin health: Effects of diaper care regimens on skin pH and erythema.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Newborn infant skin is functional but immature, and diapering products can play a significant role in infant diapered skin health. Previous work demonstrated a regimen consisting of a diaper with an emollient and apertures on the inner liner (topsheet) with an acidic, pH-buffered wipe (Regimen A) lowered newborn skin pH and reduced the enzymatic activity on skin post-stool cleaning versus a regimen without these features (Regimen B). This study extends these findings to determine the impact of Regimen A on diaper area erythema severity over a 2-week use period. METHODS:

Imaging reveals distinct textures at three infant skin sites and reflects skin barrier status.

BACKGROUND: Infant diaper dermatitis (DD) is a prevalent condition due to multiple, interactive factors including increased skin hydration, irritant exposure, and increased skin pH. We examined diaper dermatitis vs within diaper and non-diaper controls over time and characterized the association of skin color and texture relative to skin barrier integrity, hydration, and pH. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The prospective study included 46 infants with DD at well-child visits. Skin integrity was evaluated over 15 days, including visual skin condition, rate of stratum corneum transepidermal water accum

Diaper area granuloma of incontinence.

Granulomas in the diaper area developed in four patients; two male infants following surgery for Hirschsprung's disease and two female children with urinary (and/or fecal) incontinence. The use of the term 'Diaper area granuloma of incontinence' is suggested to describe these lesions seen in the elderly, as well as in incontinent infants and children.

Traditional practices in the treatment of children with diaper dermatitis.

AIM: Traditions are cultural heritages, habits, knowledge, customs and behaviors that are passed from generation to generation and from society to society. In all societies, children are seen as the future of society. Knowledge from traditions is used in raising children. Traditional practices are often used for children in cases such as breastfeeding, salting, diaper rash, diarrhea and jaundice. The aim of this study is to determine traditional practices used in the treatment of children with diaper dermatitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The research was conducted descriptively between June and

Diaper dermatitis that does not quit.

Diaper dermatitis is one of the most common skin disorders in infants. The humid, moist environment under the diaper makes the skin more susceptible to injury from exposure to irritants particularly related to urine and feces. A gentle cleansing routine, frequent diaper changes, and a thick barrier cream help control this condition. Irritant diaper dermatitis should be distinguished from other skin conditions that may develop in this sensitive area.

Diaper dermatitis. Factors to consider in diagnosis and treatment.

Diaper dermatitis is a common problem in infants and young children. Although the pathogenesis of diaper dermatitis is not well defined, many associated factors have been identified, including individual predisposition to atopic or seborrheic dermatitis, occlusion and friction caused by the diaper, and overgrowth of bacteria and yeast. General treatment goals involve keeping the diaper area as dry as possible, washing the area as infrequently as possible, and avoiding tight-fitting diapers. Petrolatum, talc, baking soda, and fluorinated topical steroidal medications should be avoided. If all e

Diaper dermatitis: a study of contributing factors.

A 44-week clinical study was carried out on a large sample of the Italian infant population to measure the incidence of diaper (napkin) dermatitis and to identify the factors related to the development of diaper dermatitis. Factors such as age, sex, the presence of atopic dermatitis, the general state of health of the child, the use of drugs and the type of diaper used were recorded. At the end of the test, 2169 clinical dermatological examinations were performed. The frequency of episodes of diaper dermatitis was 15.2%.
