Congenital diaphragmatic eventration (CDE) is always diagnosed by fluoroscopic examination. However, this technique is inappropriate for premature neonates because of risks of transport, hypothermia and ionising radiation. Herein, we describe two cases of premature neonates suspected to have CDE on radiography. We could not perform fluoroscopic examination due to their prematurity status. Therefore, we performed ultrasound examination and succeeded in diagnosing CDE without any risks. Using ultrasound examination, we could evaluate movement and thickness of the diaphragm. We consider this addi

OBJECTIVES: We sought to objectively assess our outcomes after laparoscopic diaphragmatic plication for symptomatic hemidiaphragmatic paralysis or eventration using a respiratory quality-of-life questionnaire and pulmonary function tests.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of all symptomatic patients with hemidiaphragmatic paralysis or eventration who underwent laparoscopic diaphragmatic plication from March 1, 2005, through August 31, 2008. Patients with primary neuromuscular disorders were excluded from our analysis. We collected St George's Respiratory Questionnaire scores (a res

Symptomatic unilateral diaphragmatic eventration require surgical intervention. A 56-year-old woman complained of dyspnoea on exertion and was noted to have left diaphragm elevation on chest radiographs. Dynamic magnetic resonance imaging showed paradoxical movement of the left diaphragm. We performed diaphragmatic plication by uniportal thoracoscopy with knifeless endostaplers and a loop needle device. Her symptoms significantly improved immediately after the operation, and this condition had been maintained for 6 months. We thus suggest this minimally invasive technique as an easy and safe m

We report a 59-year-old man who presented with progressive dyspnea of 30 years. His pulmonary function tests showed reduced forced expiratory volume in the first second and forced vital capacity and computed tomography of the chest showed eventration of the left hemi-diaphragm. He underwent successful laparoscopic stapled resection / plication of the lax hemi-diaphragm. He was discharged on the fourth postoperative day with the intercostal drain in situ and this was removed 5 days later at follow up. Postoperatively the pulmonary function showed significant improvement and he remains well 2 ye

We encountered a fetal pig with eventration of the diaphragm and pulmonary hypoplasia accompanied by phrenic nerve agenesis. The fetal pig was female measuring 34 cm in crown-rump length and about 1500 g in body weight. The diaphragm was a complete continuous sheet, but comprised a translucent membrane with residual muscular tissue only at the dorsolateral area of the right leaf of the diaphragm. The left leaf protruded extraordinarily toward the thoracic cavity. The left phrenic nerve was completely absent, while there was a slight remnant of the right phrenic nerve that supplied the dorsolat

We report 2 cases of non-immune hydrops fetalis (NIHF) in which autopsy findings revealed an association with right-sided congenital diaphragmatic eventration (CDE). Both patients born at 30 weeks of gestation presented with severe generalized skin oedema, pleural effusions and ascites. They both died shortly after birth of cardiorespiratory insufficiency due to lung hypoplasia and low output heart failure. The right thoracic cavity was filled with the membranous but intact right diaphragm covering the herniated visceral organs including parts of the liver, small bowel and colon surrounded by

Diaphragmatic eventration is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by the replacement of diaphragmatic muscle with fibroelastic tissue, leading to diaphragm elevation and functional impairment. While it can occur in isolation, it is sometimes associated with congenital syndromes, including septo-optic dysplasia (SOD). This report presents a case of diaphragmatic eventration in a neonate with Fryns syndrome presenting with cleft palate and SOD, highlighting diagnostic challenges. A late preterm female neonate, born via cesarean at 36 weeks gestation, presented with respiratory distress and re

The current literature is poor with studies handling the role of laparoscopy in managing diaphragmatic eventration (DE). Herein, we describe our experience regarding the role of laparoscopy in managing DE patients presenting mainly with gastrointestinal symptoms. We retrospectively reviewed the data of 20 patients who underwent laparoscopic diaphragmatic plication between January 2010 and December 2018. Postoperative outcomes and quality of life were assessed. Most DEs were left sided (95%). Laparoscopic diaphragmatic plication was possible in all patients, along with correcting all associated

Gastric volvulus (GV) and wandering spleen (WS) associated with eventration of diaphragm share a common pathological cause of absence or laxity of intraperitoneal ligaments. We herein report a rare case of a 13-year-old child presenting with an acute GV, WS, diaphragmatic eventration and an ectopic ascended kidney managed with a laparoscopic approach.

BACKGROUNDS: The pleating technique is widely used in plication but is difficult to perform with thoracoscopy because of its complex procedure and the limited surgical space. Thus, the invaginating technique was introduced to facilitate thoracoscopic surgery and is now widely used in video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) plication. However, the usefulness of the invaginating technique in children has not been established because of the lack of data on long-term outcomes after surgery using the technique.
METHODS: From March 2007 to December 2017, 21 patients who were surgically treated

BACKGROUND: Thoracoscopic plication has gained popularity in the management of diaphragmatic eventration, and several suturing techniques have been described. However, the superiority of one technique over the other has not been demonstrated. The purpose of this study is to report our experience with diaphragmatic plication and to compare the thoracoscopic interrupted and pleated suture techniques in pediatric patients with diaphragmatic eventration.
METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study (level of evidence: 3) performed on 14 patients with diaphragmatic eventration. All patients were

BACKGROUND: Phrenic nerve palsy in infants and young children usually results from birth injury or iatrogenic damage. The newborn almost invariably presents with severe respiratory distress, diaphragmatic elevation, and paradoxical movement at the affected side.
METHODS/RESULTS: In this retrospective analysis a group of 23 patients below the age of 1 year with an obstetric or postoperative phrenic nerve injury was studied and compared with cases in the literature. All patients were admitted between 1986 and 1997 to the Pediatric Surgical Center, Amsterdam. Thirteen of 18 patients with an obst

Congenital diaphragmatic eventration (CDE) is a rare condition characterized by abnormal elevation of an intact but thinned diaphragm. Severe cases may mimic congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), leading to respiratory distress in infants. We report the case of a nine-month-old male baby presenting with chronic chest retractions and feeding difficulties, who developed acute respiratory distress initially misdiagnosed as right-sided CDH with pneumonia. Frontal chest radiography suggested herniation, but lateral imaging and surgical findings confirmed right-sided CDE. The patient underwent diap

Myotonic dystrophy type 1, or dystrophia myotonica type 1 (DM1), is a multisystem disorder inherited in an autosomal dominant manner. It is caused by a CTG tri-nucleotide expansion in the 3'-untranslated region (3'-UTR) of the dystrophia myotonia protein kinase ( DMPK ) gene. Core clinical features include progressive skeletal muscle weakness, myotonia, and systemic complications, with premature mortality most often due to respiratory or cardiac dysfunction. We report the case of sudden death in a 48-year-old woman with a prior clinical diagnosis of DM1, who had not undergone adequate neuromus

We report a rare occurrence of a previously asymptomatic eventration that presented with intestinal obstruction followed by respiratory distress. The thinned out diaphragm had a nontraumatic perforation with herniation of the small bowel through the narrow defect. The herniated gut became strangulated and dilated inside the thorax, resulting in respiratory compromise. The rare occurrence of this vicious cycle of obstruction and respiratory failure leading to a sudden clinical deterioration in a previously stable patient is described.

A 2,980-gram female infant was born to a 25-year-old mother at the gestational age of 34 weeks with the chief problems of asphyxia and respiratory distress. Prenatal sonogram at 34th week of gestation showed significant pleural effusion, mediastinal shift, polyhydramnios and large for date. Soon after birth, she was put on intubation and ventilator therapy. Physical examination revealed poor chest wall excursion. Breathing sound was markedly decreased over the right lung field. Abdomen was soft and slightly distended with the liver palpable 0.5 cm below the right costal margin and 2 cm below t

PURPOSE: The diaphragmatic plication procedure by thoracoscopy has gradually become standard treatment for diaphragmatic eventration (DE). However, thoracoscopic diaphragmatic plication is difficult to manipulate and the surgical learning curve is long. This study aimed to demonstrate the feasibility and safety of same-day surgery for DE by minithoracotomy in children.
METHODS: From December 2017 to December 2019, we included 22 patients who underwent diaphragmatic plication of DE in the Department of Pediatric Thoracic Surgery at the Guangzhou Women and Children's Medical Center. A total of

INTRODUCTION: Eventration of the diaphragm results in impaired respiratory mechanics, which leads to symptoms of dyspnea. Robotic diaphragmatic plication is a recently reported technique that has had good immediate outcomes. The aim of this study was to describe our transthoracic and transabdominal plication techniques and to analyze the safety, efficacy, and feasibility of robotic diaphragmatic plication in an Indian setting.
METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted at a large tertiary care center in a dedicated thoracic surgery unit. To measure the efficacy of plication, we administe
