An aesthetic classification of the abdomen based on the myoaponeurotic layer.

An objective classification for abdominoplasty based on myoaponeurotic deformities is described. Types A, B, C, and D correspond to different myoaponeurotic deformities. Patients with type A display rectus diastasis secondary to pregnancy, and plication of the anterior rectus sheath is indicated. Patients with type B present with laxity of the lateral and inferior areas of the abdominal wall after approximation of the anterior rectus sheaths. An L-shaped plication of the external oblique aponeurosis is performed in addition to the correction of rectus diastasis. Patients with type C are those

A new minimally invasive technique for the repair of diastasis recti: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Diastasis recti is an abdominal wall defect that occurs frequently in women during pregnancy. Patients with diastasis can experience lower back pain, uro-gynecological symptoms, and discomfort at the level of the defect. Diastasis recti is diagnosed when the inter-rectus distance is > 2 cm. Several techniques, including both minimally invasive and open access surgical treatment, are available. Abdominoplasty with plication of the anterior rectus sheath is the most commonly used, with the major limitation of requiring a wide skin incision. The new technique we propose is a modificat

Is Diastasis Recti Abdominis Associated With Low Back Pain? A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) is a common cause of disability worldwide; multiple causes and risk factors have been proposed in the genesis of back pain. Some studies reported an association between diastasis recti abdominis (DRA), a surrogate for decreased core strength muscle, and low back pain. We aimed to investigate the relationship between DRA and LBP through a systematic review. METHODS: A systematic review of the literature of clinical studies in English literature was conducted. PubMed, Cochrane, and Embase databases were used to conduct the search up to January 2022. The strategy

Primary repair of complete sternal cleft with pectoralis major muscle flaps.

We report the successful coverage of a complete sternal cleft with exposed pericardium using bilateral pectoralis major muscle flaps in a newborn. The patient was transferred to our institution with nearly complete sternal aplasia, rectus diastasis, and only dessicated pericardium covering the visible heart. Complete closure without compromise of cardiac function was achieved at 2 days of age with bilateral pectoralis major muscle flaps and fasciocutaneous advancement flaps.

Evaluation of functional outcomes following rectus diastasis repair-an up-to-date literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Over the last decade rectus diastasis has gained attention as a condition that may benefit from surgery. Numerous surgical techniques have been presented but scientifically proper studies reporting functional outcome are few and evidence is incomplete. The aim of this up-to-date review is to analyse the outcomes of rectus diastasis repair in recently published papers, focusing on functional changes following surgery. METHOD: A comprehensive search in PubMed and Web of Science was performed. Suitable papers were selected using titles and abstracts with terms suggesting surgical t

[Classification criteria for anterior abdominal wall deformities].

OBJECTIVE: To determine the distribution of patients with different anterior abdominal wall deformities. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Physical data, CT and morphological findings were analyzed in 622 patients. The study was conducted in retro- and prospective nature. RESULTS: Five types of deformation were identified depending on anatomical changes of anterior abdominal wall. The first two types included patients without muscular-aponeurotic changes, types 3 and 5a - patients with diastasis recti alone, types 4 and 5b - severe muscular-aponeurotic relaxation due to a combination of diastasis recti

The relationship between transversus abdominis and rehabilitation exercises for diastasis recti abdominis: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Physiotherapy is the primary management approach for diastasis recti abdominis (DRA). Most published research has focused on intervention types, exercise effects, and their evaluation, with relatively little work on how to design exercise programmes that are grounded in biomechanical mechanisms. One reason for this gap may be that changes in trunk mechanics associated with pregnancy have been overlooked. This scoping review explores the biomechanical basis for rehabilitation exercises for DRA, with a particular focus on the transversus abdominis (TrA). METHODS: We searched PubMed,

Robotic Intracorporeal Rectus Aponeuroplasty: Early Experience of a New Surgical Technique for Ventral Hernia Repair.

Introduction: The laparoscopic intracorporeal rectus aponeuroplasty (LIRA) was developed as an alternative for minimally invasive ventral hernia repair. This technique allows the closure of the defect and restoration of the midline without tension by plication of both aponeurosis of the abdominal rectus muscles combined with a minimally invasive intraperitoneal underlay mesh repair. The objective of this study is to report our early experience with the Robotic-LIRA (R-LIRA) technique and its safety and short-term efficacy. Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of patients undergoing R

[Morbidity of the abdominal wall after breast reconstruction and elective abdominoplasty].

INTRODUCTION: The free TRAM flap is commonly used in breast reconstruction after mastectomy. Donor-site morbidity of the abdominal wall is usually determined by scars, loss of sensation and functional restrictions. Similar aesthetic and functional problems are described for patients after elective abdominoplasty. Is morbidity of the abdominal wall after breast reconstruction based on muscle lesions or on the trauma from operation? PATIENTS AND METHODS: 21 patients after breast reconstruction and 20 patients after elective abdominoplasty were evaluated concerning the aesthetic results, scars a

Abdominal wall sonography: a pictorial review.

The anterior abdominal wall, which is composed of three layers (skin and adipose tissues; the myofascial layer; and the deep layer, consisting of the transversalis fascia, preperitoneal fat, and the parietal peritoneum), has many functions: containment, support and protection for the intraperitoneal contents, and involvement in movement and breathing. While hernias are often encountered and well reviewed in the literature, the other abdominal wall pathologies are less commonly described. In this pictorial review, we briefly discuss the normal anatomy of the anterior abdominal wall, describe th

Muscular contracture as a component of low back pain: evaluation criteria and significance of relaxant therapy.

The measurement of diastasis of the spinous processes and of muscular action potentials by means of bio-feedback equipment is a clinically valid means to evaluate the extent of reflex muscular contracture. The methods were used to study the relaxant effect of pridinol mesylate on the lumbar extensor muscles in subjects with acute low back pain. It was found that pridinol mesylate significantly reduced the contracture of the extensor lumbar muscles in low back pain when given per os or parenterally.
