Neuropeptide Y-like immunoreactivity in the diencephalon of the little brown bat (Myotis lucifugus): localized variations with physiological state.

The current study used light microscopic immunocytochemistry to demonstrate and compare neuropeptide Y-like immunoreactivity (NPY-IR) in the diencephalon of the little brown bat (Myotis lucifugus) at different stages in its annual cycle of activity and hibernation. Animals were sacrificed in each of three discrete physiological states: euthermic, hypothermic, and hibernating. In general, NPY-IR was abundant in the hypothalamus and sparse in other diencephalic areas. Immunoreactivity was present in a number of pathways which project to or originate from diencephalic nuclei; these include the an

[Diagnosis of diencephalic disorders. Clinical study on the diagnosis of diencephalic disorders before and after surgery of tumors in the region of the sella and the diencephalon].

The clinical symptomatology of diencephalic disorders is studied in 193 patients operated because of tumors in the sellar region. A new classification of these tumors is established according to the localization and degree of compression of the hypothalamus. The following parameters were examined: body temperature, blood pressure, pulse rate, electrolytes, fluid balance, and serum glucose. In addition, hormonal tests for hypophyseal and diencephalic disorders were carried out. The analysis shows a significant postoperative temperature rise in patients with tumors in the hypothalamic region, de

Olfactory relationships of the telencephalon and diencephalon in the rabbit. II. An autoradiographic and horseradish peroxidase study of the efferent connections of the anterior olfactory nucleus.

The efferent connections of the anterior olfactory nucleus in the female albino rabbit have been studied using the autoradiographic and horseradish peroxidase methods for tracing axonal pathways. Following a unilateral injection of 3H-leucine into the olfactory peduncle, radioactively labeled efferent projections from the anterior olfactory nucleus were traced into all layers of the ipsilateral main olfactory bulb beneath the olfactory nerve layer and through the ipsilateral anterior limb of the anterior commissure and plexiform layer of the medial side of the cerebral hemisphere to the deep h

Thiamine deficiency in rats produces cognitive and memory deficits on spatial tasks that correlate with tissue loss in diencephalon, cortex and white matter.

Exploratory activity, spontaneous alternation, learning and memory abilities were examined in the pyrithiamine-induced thiamine deficiency (PTD) rat model of Wernicke-Korsakoff's syndrome and pair-fed controls (CT). PTD and CT animals showed normal retention of a single trial of a passive avoidance task acquired prior to the acute stages of thiamine deficiency. While there were no significant group differences in spontaneous activity, PTD animals with extensive damage to internal medullary lamina (IML-lesioned) of thalamus and mammillary body nuclei demonstrated a significant decrease in spont

[Embryonal development of the brain of the shark Scyliorhinus canicula (L.). I. Formation of the shape of the brain, the migration mode and phase and the structure of the diencephalon].

Brain structure of the shark Scyliorhinus canicula has been studied on the basis of a series of embryonic stages. The incubation time was 157 days in average (under constant conditions of 15 centigrades and density of 1.026). 1. The first predominant characters of the external brain shape are the optic tectum, cerebellum, telencephali hemispheres and oculomotor root. In addition, the brain axis is characterized by new flexures in the cerebellar and prosencephalic level. A nuchal flexure in absent. 2. The ontogenetic pattern of the matrix layer differs in different brain parts. Generally, ventr

Optic chiasm and infundibular decussation sites in the developing rat diencephalon are defined by glial raphes expressing p35 (lipocortin 1, annexin I).

p35, a Ca(++)-phospholipid-binding protein that serves as a substrate for the EGF receptor tyrosine kinase, is expressed by primitive glial ependymal cells to define a raphe occupying the ventral midline in the spinal cord and hindbrain of rat embryos (McKanna and Cohen, Science 243:1477-1479, 1989). p35 appears transiently in the median one-third (80 microns) of the floor plate at precisely the time and place where axons cross to form the ventral commissure. We postulated that if p35 is involved with commissure development, homologous p35 raphes might be found at decussation sites rostral to

Stereotactic Radiosurgery Provides Long-Term Safety for Patients With Arteriovenous Malformations in the Diencephalon and Brainstem: The Optimal Dose Selection and Long-Term Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) of the diencephalon (DC) and brainstem (BS) are difficult to treat. Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is a reasonable option; however, an optimal radiosurgical dose needs to be established to optimize long-term outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate dose-dependent long-term outcomes of SRS for DC/BS-AVMs. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the long-term outcomes of 118 patients who had SRS-treated DC/BS-AVMs. The outcomes included post-SRS hemorrhage, AVM obliteration, neurological outcomes, and disease-specific survival. According to margin doses, th

[Hypothermia and memory disturbance as initial manifestations associated with lesions of the diencephalon in a patient with anti-aquaporin 4 antibody-associated disorder: a case report].

A 69-year-old woman was admitted due to gradual progression of daytime sleepiness and forgetfulness over a period of approximately 1 month. Bradycardia and hypothermia were observed on admission, and neurological examination revealed memory disturbance, mild dysarthria, and bradykinesia. Fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) images of the brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) indicated signal hyperintensity in the region bordering the lateral and third ventricles. Serum anti-aquaporin 4 (AQP4) antibody was detected. The patient had no history or findings of optic neuritis or myelitis, a

Memory for reward location is enhanced even though acetylcholine efflux within the amygdala is impaired in rats with damage to the diencephalon produced by thiamine deficiency.

A rodent model of diencephalic amnesia produced by thiamine deficiency (pyrithiamine-induced thiamine deficiency [PTD]) was implemented to assess both changes in behavior and acetylcholine (ACh) efflux in the amygdala across four training sessions of a delayed alternation task. Two versions of the delayed alternation task were used. In one version, when a correct alternation was made a unique reward was paired with each spatial location ([left arm-chocolate milk] or [right arm-rat chow]). This paradigm is called the differential outcomes procedure (DOP). In the second version of the task, corr

Progestin concentrations are increased following paced mating in midbrain, hippocampus, diencephalon, and cortex of rats in behavioral estrus, but only in midbrain of diestrous rats.

BACKGROUND: The progesterone (P(4)) metabolite, 5alpha-pregnan-3alpha-ol-20-one (3alpha,5alpha-THP), acts in the midbrain ventral tegmental area (VTA) to modulate the intensity and duration of lordosis. 3alpha,5alpha-THP can also have anti-anxiety and anti-stress effects in part through actions in the hippocampus. Separate reports indicate that manipulating 3alpha,5alpha-THP levels in the VTA or hippocampus respectively can influence lordosis and affective behavior. 3alpha,5alpha-THP levels can also be altered by behavioral experiences, such as mating or swim stress. Whether endogenous levels

Effects of continuous white light and 12h white-12h blue light-cycles on the expression of clock genes in diencephalon, liver, and skeletal muscle in chicks.

The core circadian clock mechanism relies on a feedback loop comprised of clock genes, such as the brain and muscle Arnt-like 1 (Bmal1), chriptochrome 1 (Cry1), and period 3 (Per3). Exposure to the light-dark cycle synchronizes the master circadian clock in the brain, and which then synchronizes circadian clocks in peripheral tissues. Birds have long been used as a model for the investigation of circadian rhythm in human neurobiology. In the present study, we examined the effects of continuous light and the combination of white and blue light on the expression of clock genes (Bmal1, Cry1, and

Topographic organization of bidirectional connections between the cingulate region (infralimbic area and anterior cingulate area, dorsal part) and the interbrain (diencephalon) of the adult male rat.

The medial prefrontal cortex [cingulate region (Brodmann, 1909) (CNG)] in the rat is a connectionally and functionally diverse structure. It harbors cerebral nuclei that use long-range connections to promote adaptive changes to ongoing behaviors. The CNG is often described across functional and anatomical gradients, a dorsalventral gradient being the most prominent. Topographic organization is a general feature of the nervous system, and it is becoming clear that such spatial arrangements can reflect connectional, functional, and cellular differences. Portions of the CNG are known to form reci

Associations between the human growth hormone-releasing hormone- and neuropeptide-Y-immunoreactive systems in the human diencephalon: a possible morphological substrate of the impact of stress on growth.

Previous studies revealed that stress is a pivotal factor in the regulation of growth. Psychological harassment may result in psychosocial dwarfism with delayed puberty, short stature and depression. Growth hormone (GH) secretion is suppressed by stress, possibly via the attenuation of growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) secretion. However, the morphological substrate of this phenomenon has not been elucidated yet. Since neuropeptide Y (NPY) levels in the plasma is increased by administration of various stressors, the common consensus is that NPY plays a crucial role in the stress response

Concordance of quantitative damage within the diencephalon and telencephalon following systemic pilocarpine (380 mg/kg) or lithium (3 mEq/kg)/pilocarpine (30 mg/kg) induced seizures.

We tested the hypothesis that a single systemic injection of 380 mg/kg of the muscarinic agonist pilocarpine would produce more diffuse and severe seizure-induced brain damage than a single injection of lithium (3 mEq/kg) followed 4 h later by < 1/10 the dosage of pilocarpine. The hypothesis was not supported; the pattern of quantitative brain damage 50-60 days after the seizures were elicited by either treatment was comparable within the limits of measurement error. Within the diencephalon and subcortical telencephalon the same structures were either damaged in a similar quantitative manner o
