Association of the Mediterranean Diet With Onset of Diabetes in the Women's Health Study.

IMPORTANCE: Higher Mediterranean diet (MED) intake has been associated with reduced risk of type 2 diabetes, but underlying biological mechanisms are unclear. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the relative contribution of conventional and novel biomarkers in MED-associated type 2 diabetes risk reduction in a US population. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study was conducted among 25 317 apparently healthy women. The participants with missing information regarding all traditional and novel metabolic biomarkers or those with baseline diabetes were excluded. Participants were invited fo

Diet-Gut Microbiota Interactions and Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM).

Medical nutritional therapy is the first-line approach in managing gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Diet is also a powerful modulator of the gut microbiota, whose impact on insulin resistance and the inflammatory response in the host are well known. Changes in the gut microbiota composition have been described in pregnancies either before the onset of GDM or after its diagnosis. The possible modulation of the gut microbiota by dietary interventions in pregnancy is a topic of emerging interest, in consideration of the potential effects on maternal and consequently neonatal health. To date,

Low-carbohydrate diets for the treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Summarize the physiological effects of low-carbohydrate diets as they relate to weight loss, glycemic control, and metabolic health. RECENT FINDINGS: Low-carbohydrate diets are at least as effective for weight loss as other diets, but claims about increased energy expenditure and preferential loss of body fat are unsubstantiated. Glycemic control and hyperinsulinemia are improved by low-carbohydrate diets, but insulin sensitivity and glucose-stimulated insulin secretion may be impaired, especially in the absence of weight loss. Fasting lipid parameters are generally improve

[Proper diet in type 2 diabetes as a means of patients' rehabilitation].

The aim of the study was to specify the dietary habits of type 2 diabetes sufferers. The investigation was conducted in medical centres of the Małopolskie voivodship in 2008. Anonymous questionnaires were filled in by a group of l00 persons (66 women and 34 men) aged 40 to 84. Principles of proper nutritional behaviour were implemented to a limited extent by the ill studied. The most common dietary errors were: the lack of regular meal intake, snacking between meals, eating sweets and employing inadvisable cooking techniques. The patients' diets included fatty meats such as pâté, salami, sausa

[Diet therapy in non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM)].

The main approach in NIDDM therapy is diet. Most patients present insulin resistance characterized by overweight, VLDL increase, minimal increase of LDL, decrease of HDL cholesterol, and hypertension. The overall goals of nutrition therapy are the maintenance of near normal glucose levels, and the achievement of optimal serum lipid levels with adequate calories for maintaining or attaining a reasonable body weight. In presence of obesity and hypertension even a slightly weight loss could achieve an improvement in metabolic control and in hypertension with a better life expectance. General-ly c

Graded sucrose/carbohydrate diets in overtly hypertriglyceridemic diabetic patients.

Overtly hypertriglyceridemic patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus were given a control diet containing 120 g of sucrose and 50 percent carbohydrate, and later randomly assigned to receive isocaloric high- (220 g), intermediate- (120 g), or low- (less than 3 g) sucrose/carbohydrate diets for four weeks. The low-sucrose diet group demonstrated a modest but significant decrease in mean fasting serum glucose level in the first week only, although this change was no different from the other two dietary groups and was not sustained. All groups had little change in late postprandial

Role of diet in the management of vasopressin-responsive and -resistant diabetes insipidus.

Dietary protein and NaCl are the precursors of about 60% of the urinary osmoles (urea and NaCl). This investigation tested the hypothesis that in patients with dieabetes insipidus, intake of dietary protein and salt will directly influence the degree of polyuria. Four subjects with pituitary and one with nephrogenic diabetes insipidus were studied. All medications were discontinued. To provide diets ranging between "low-solute" and "high-solute," protein was varied in increments from 40 to 130 g/day and NaCl was varied simultaneously from 0.5 to 10 g/day. In all patients, each increment in pro

Interaction of B0AT1 Deficiency and Diet on Metabolic Function and Diabetes Incidence in Male Nonobese Diabetic Mice.

CONTEXT: The obesity epidemic parallels an increasing type 1 diabetes incidence, such that westernized diets, containing high fat, sugar, and/or protein, through inducing nutrient-induced islet β-cell stress, have been proposed as contributing factors. The broad-spectrum neutral amino acid transporter (B0AT1), encoded by Slc6a19, is the major neutral amino acids transporter in intestine and kidney. B0AT1 deficiency in C567Bl/6J mice causes aminoaciduria, lowers insulinemia, and improves glucose tolerance. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the effects of standard rodent chow (chow), high-fat high-suc

A low protein diet in early life delays the onset of diabetes in the non-obese diabetic mouse.

Dietary insult in early life can affect the development and future function of the endocrine pancreas. We maintained pregnant non-obese diabetic (NOD) mice on a low protein (LP, 8% protein versus control, 20%) diet from conception until the weaning of pups at day 21. Serum insulin and pancreatic insulin content were reduced in LP-fed NOD offspring at 8 weeks, as were serum interferon gamma and pancreatic tumor necrosis factor alpha, while the number of pancreatic islets demonstrating peri-insulitis, and the degree of invasiveness were reduced. To determine if LP caused early morphometric chang

A diet producing a low diabetes incidence modifies immune abnormalities in diabetes-prone BB rats.

The effect of feeding a diet that produces a high or low incidence of diabetes on immune abnormalities proposed to contribute to the pathogenesis of autoimmune-mediated diabetes was investigated. Diabetes-prone (BBdp) and nondiabetes-prone (BBn) BB rats (21 d) were fed for 21 d a nonpurified (high incidence) or purified (low diabetes incidence) diet. Compared with BBn, immune cells from spleen and mesenteric lymph nodes of BBdp rats demonstrated higher rates of metabolite production from glucose and glutamine, higher splenic cytotoxicity (lysis of 51Cr-labeled YAC-1 cells) and lower mitogen re

Differential Effects of High Methionine Diet on Biochemical Parameters in Normal and Diabetic Rat Models.

This study investigated the organ-specific effects of a high-methionine (HM) diet in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats, focusing on hepatic and renal metabolic adaptations. Male Wistar rats were divided into four groups (n=8/group): normal control, HM (2% methionine), STZ-diabetic, and HM+STZ. Over 12 weeks, HM supplementation in diabetic rats significantly reduced hepatic triglyceride accumulation (42.00±7.71 vs. 20.76±3.63 mg/g tissue, P<0.01), coinciding with AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) activation (1.96-fold, P<0.05) and downregulation of lipogenic genes (sterol regulatory

Inappropriate diet and hygiene status affect the progression of diabetic kidney disease by causing dysbiosis.

OBJECTIVE: Although the effects of an unhealthy diet on the risks of diabetes and its renal complications are well understood, the effects of hygiene status have not been fully elucidated. RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES: We created four groups of mice according to the diet fed (standard [SD] or high-fat [HFD]) and their living environment (conventional [CV] or specific pathogen-free [SPF]), and characterized the extent of their kidney pathology, their gut microbiota, and their fecal short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) concentrations. RESULTS: The body masses and glycated hemoglobin levels of the

Licochalcone A alleviates abnormal glucolipid metabolism and restores energy homeostasis in diet-induced diabetic mice.

Licochalcone A (LCA) is a bioactive chalcone compound identified in licorice. This study aimed to investigate the effects of LCA on glucolipid metabolism and energy homeostasis, as well as the underlying mechanisms. Blood glucose levels, oral glucose tolerance, serum parameters, and histopathology were examined in high-fat-high-glucose diet (HFD)-induced diabetic mice, with metformin as a positive control. Additionally, changes in key markers related to glucolipid metabolism and mitochondrial function were analyzed to comprehensively assess LCA's effects on metabolism. The results showed that

Gentiopicroside modulates glucose homeostasis in high-fat-diet and streptozotocin-induced type 2 diabetic mice.

Gluconeogenesis is closely related to the occurrence and development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Gentiopicroside (GPS) is the main active secoiridoid glycoside in Gentiana manshurica Kitagawa, which can improve chronic complications associated with diabetes and regulate glucose metabolism. However, the effects and potential mechanisms by which GPS affects T2DM understudied and poorly understood. In this study, we systematically explored the pharmacological effects of GPS on T2DM induced by a high-fat diet (HFD) and streptozotocin (STZ) as well as explored its related mechanisms. The re

Efficacy of Sitagliptin on Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease in High-fat-diet-fed Diabetic Mice.

OBJECTIVE: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a common cause of clinical liver dysfunction and an important prepathological change of liver cirrhosis. Central obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, and metabolic syndrome are the major risk factors for NAFLD. Sitagliptin (Sig) is a novel hypoglycemic agent that improves blood glucose levels by increasing the level of active incretin. Sig has been shown to prevent the development of fatty livers in mice on a fructose-rich diet. The purpose of this study was to observe the efficacy of Sig on NAFLD in type 2 diabetic mice. METH

Pulmonary and vascular effects of acute ozone exposure in diabetic rats fed an atherogenic diet.

Air pollutants may increase risk for cardiopulmonary disease, particularly in susceptible populations with metabolic stressors such as diabetes and unhealthy diet. We investigated effects of inhaled ozone exposure and high-cholesterol diet (HCD) in healthy Wistar and Wistar-derived Goto-Kakizaki (GK) rats, a non-obese model of type 2 diabetes. Male rats (4-week old) were fed normal diet (ND) or HCD for 12 weeks and then exposed to filtered air or 1.0 ppm ozone (6 h/day) for 1 or 2 days. We examined pulmonary, vascular, hematology, and inflammatory responses after each exposure plus an 18-h rec

Maternal diet modulates placenta growth and gene expression in a mouse model of diabetic pregnancy.

Unfavorable maternal diet during pregnancy can predispose the offspring to diseases later in life, such as hypertension, metabolic syndrome, and obesity. However, the molecular basis for this phenomenon of "developmental programming" is poorly understood. We have recently shown that a diet nutritionally optimized for pregnancy can nevertheless be harmful in the context of diabetic pregnancy in the mouse, associated with a high incidence of neural tube defects and intrauterine growth restriction. We hypothesized that placental abnormalities may contribute to impaired fetal growth in these pregn
