Efficacy of diet and exercise in the reduction of serum cholesterol and triglyceride in free-living adult males.

Young males with levels of serum cholesterol or triglyceride in the upper quartile of the distribution for volunteers tested, participated in a program designed to determine the effect of diet and exercise on serum lipids. Dietary modifications involved caloric restriction superimposed on either the National Institutes of Health (NIH) recommendations for type II or IV hyperlipoproteinemia, as appropriate, or superimposed on a fat-controlled regimen in which fat of an unspecified nature was restricted to 30% of total calories. Participants with elevated levels of cholesterol responded significa

Natural killer T cells in adipose tissue prevent insulin resistance.

Lipid overload and adipocyte dysfunction are key to the development of insulin resistance and can be induced by a high-fat diet. CD1d-restricted invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cells have been proposed as mediators between lipid overload and insulin resistance, but recent studies found decreased iNKT cell numbers and marginal effects of iNKT cell depletion on insulin resistance under high-fat diet conditions. Here, we focused on the role of iNKT cells under normal conditions. We showed that iNKT cell-deficient mice on a low-fat diet, considered a normal diet for mice, displayed a distinctive

Comparison of Ketogenic Diets with and without Ketone Salts versus a Low-Fat Diet: Liver Fat Responses in Overweight Adults.

Ketogenic diets (KDs) often contain high levels of saturated fat, which may increase liver fat, but the lower carbohydrate intake may have the opposite effect. Using a controlled feeding design, we compared liver fat responses to a hypocaloric KD with a placebo (PL) versus an energy-matched low-fat diet (LFD) in overweight adults. We also examined the added effect of a ketone supplement (KS). Overweight adults were randomized to a 6-week KD (KD + PL) or a KD with KS (KD + KS); an LFD group was recruited separately. All diets were estimated to provide 75% of energy expenditure. Weight loss was

Low fat diet versus low carbohydrate diet for management of non-alcohol fatty liver disease: A systematic review.

Although there is a consensus on beneficial effects of a low calorie diet in management of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, the optimal composition of diet has not yet been elucidated. The aim of this review is to summarize the results of current randomized controlled trials evaluating the effects of low fat diet (LFD) vs. low carbohydrate diet (LCD) on NAFLD. This is a systematic review of all the available data reported in published clinical trials up to February 2022. The methodological quality of eligible studies was assessed, and data were presented aiming specific standard measurements

A High-Fat, High-Protein, Carbohydrate-Restricted Dietary Interventions in Pompe Disease: A Case Series with Long-Term Follow-Up.

INTRODUCTION: Pompe disease (PD) is a lysosomal storage disorder characterized by progressive glycogen accumulation leading to cardiomyopathy and motor decline. Despite the survival benefits of enzyme replacement therapy (ERT), the long-term clinical course is often complicated by persistent skeletal muscle pathology, necessitating effective adjunctive interventions. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical utility of a high fat, high protein, carbohydrate-restricted dietary intervention in patients with PD. METHODS: Data collected included the initial and duration of dietary treatment, tota

Short-term changes in lipoprotein subclasses and C-reactive protein levels of hypertriglyceridemic adults on low-carbohydrate and low-fat diets.

Diets designed to promote weight loss and improve atherogenic lipid profiles traditionally include a reduction in total fat and, in particular, saturated fats. This study was designed to test the efficacy of a low-fat diet vs a carbohydrate (CHO)-restricted (low-CHO) diet in hypertriglyceridemic patients on lipid profile, weight loss, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), and satiety. Twenty-eight hypertriglyceridemic subjects (based on fasting triacylglycerol [TG] levels exceeding 1.69 mmol/L) were randomized to either the low-CHO or low-fat diet for 8 weeks. Fasting bloods were acqui

Role of choline deficiency in the Fatty liver phenotype of mice fed a low protein, very low carbohydrate ketogenic diet.

Though widely employed for clinical intervention in obesity, metabolic syndrome, seizure disorders and other neurodegenerative diseases, the mechanisms through which low carbohydrate ketogenic diets exert their ameliorative effects still remain to be elucidated. Rodent models have been used to identify the metabolic and physiologic alterations provoked by ketogenic diets. A commonly used rodent ketogenic diet (Bio-Serv F3666) that is very high in fat (~94% kcal), very low in carbohydrate (~1% kcal), low in protein (~5% kcal), and choline restricted (~300 mg/kg) provokes robust ketosis and weig

The Efficacy of Dietary Interventions in Patients with Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Intervention Studies.

BACKGROUND: International guidelines recommend dietary interventions as one of the most important treatments for patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Evidence to confirm the efficacy of these treatment modalities is lacking. The present study aims to evaluate the efficacy of dietary interventions on GERD-related outcomes evaluated in intervention studies on GERD patients. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed according to PRISMA. The PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Sciences, and Scopus databases were utilized for the literature search. Long-term effects of maternal magnesium restriction on adiposity and insulin resistance in rat pups.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the long-term effects of maternal/postnatal magnesium (Mg) restriction on adiposity, glucose tolerance, and insulin secretion in the offspring and the probable biochemical mechanisms associated with them. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Female weanling Wistar/NIN (WNIN) rats received a control diet or 70% Mg-restricted (MgR) diet for 9 weeks and mated with control males. A third of the restricted dams were shifted to control diet from parturition. Half of the pups born to the remaining restricted dams were weaned on to control diet, while the other half continued on MgR die

Visceral adiposity and metabolic syndrome after very high-fat and low-fat isocaloric diets: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Different aspects of dietary pattern, including macronutrient and food profiles, may affect visceral fat mass and metabolic syndrome. OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that consuming energy primarily from carbohydrate or fat in diets with similar food profiles would differentially affect the ability to reverse visceral adiposity and metabolic syndrome. DESIGN: Forty-six men (aged 30-50 y) with body mass index (in kg/m2) >29 and waist circumference >98 cm were randomly assigned to a very high-fat, low-carbohydrate (VHFLC; 73% of energy fat and 10% of energy carbohydrate) or low-fat, high

Photic Cycle Shorter Than or Equal to Endogenous tau Postpones Diet-Induced Obesity in Mice and Shows a Robust Aftereffect.

High-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity (DIO) is preceded by disruptions in endogenous circadian rhythmicity, including lengthening of its period (tau). We previously demonstrated that housing mice under a light-dark cycle (T-cycle) oscillating at their endogenous tau of 23.7 h prevents the DIO found under the 24-h T-cycle, suggesting that DIO is also secondary to disruptions caused by entrainment to non-tau-matching T-cycles. Here, we aimed to test this hypothesis by comparing energy homeostasis of low-fat diet (LFD) and HFD-fed female mice housed under four regimes: constant darkness (DD), a T-c

Changes in quantity plant-based protein intake on type 2 diabetes remission in coronary heart disease patients: from the CORDIOPREV study.

PURPOSE: Diabetes remission is a phenomenon described in the context of drastic weight loss due to bariatric surgery or low-calorie diets. Evidence suggests that increasing the intake of plant protein could reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. We sought for association between changes in plant protein intake in the context of 2 healthy diets without weight loss nor glucose-lowering medication, and diabetes remission in coronary heart disease patients from the CORDIOPREV study. METHODS: Newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes participants without glucose-lowering treatment were randomized to consume a

Marked Changes in One-Carbon Metabolism on a Low-Carbohydrate High-Fat Diet: A Randomized Controlled Trial (CARBFUNC).

BACKGROUND: Studying the impact of dietary carbohydrates and fat on markers of one-carbon metabolism could provide important insight into distinct metabolic adaptations and how diets affect disease risk. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine changes in plasma one-carbon metabolites and B-vitamers on isocaloric diets differing in carbohydrate processing or amount. METHODS: A total of 193 individuals with obesity were randomly assigned to equal-energy and protein diets either with more processed, acellular carbohydrates [acellular, high-carbohydrate low-fat (A-HCLF), comparator arm], minim

Cardiac hypertrophy with obesity is augmented after pregnancy in C57BL/6 mice.

BACKGROUND: Over a third of reproductive-age women in the USA are obese, and the prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is rising in premenopausal women. Cardiac hypertrophy is an independent predictor of CVD. In contrast to pregnancy, where transiently increased left ventricular (LV) mass is not associated with cardiac damage, obesity-mediated cardiac hypertrophy is pathological. There is a paucity of data describing the effect of obesity during pregnancy on maternal cardiovascular health. The purpose of this study was to determine the long-term effect of obesity during pregnancy on cardi

Health-related quality of life, compliance and sustained adherence on a low-carbohydrate high-fat diet compared with a high-carbohydrate low-fat diet in people with type 2 diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is a central aspect of overall health and a crucial factor in dietary interventions, as it may determine both dietary compliance and sustained adherence. OBJECTIVES: We assessed the effect on HRQoL between: 1) the low-carbohydrate high-fat (LCHF) diet and 2) the high-carbohydrate low-fat (HCLF) diet and evaluated the impact on dietary compliance and sustained adherence. METHODS: This is a prespecified secondary analysis from a randomized controlled trial in people with type 2 diabetes. Participants were randomly assigned 2:1 to follow either

Protein restriction during pregnancy affects postnatal growth in swine progeny.

Protein deficiency during pregnancy affects fetal development. The critical period, when the fetus is most susceptible to maternal protein deficiency and its effect on neonatal growth, is unknown. Therefore, we studied the effect of a protein-restricted diet during early and late pregnancy and throughout pregnancy on growth of pigs from birth to market weight. Sows were fed a control (13% protein) or protein-restricted (0.5% protein) diet throughout pregnancy or protein-restricted diet from d 1 to 44, then control diet to term or control diet from d 1 to 81, then the protein-restricted diet to

Changes in circulating miRNAs in healthy overweight and obese subjects: Effect of diet composition and weight loss.

BACKGROUND: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNA molecules that can play an important role in several chronic metabolic conditions, including obesity. However, to date little is known about how they are regulated. Weight loss induced by surgical procedures has been effective at modulating specific circulating miRNAs, but the effect of energy-restricted diets with different macronutrient compositions on circulating miRNAs is not well understood. The objective of the present analysis was to explore the effect of three energy-restricted diets of different macronutrient composition and carb
