BACKGROUND: The Seven Countries study in the 1960s showed that populations in the Mediterranean region experienced lower coronary heart disease (CHD) mortality probably as a result of different dietary patterns. Later observational studies have confirmed the benefits of adherence to a Mediterranean dietary pattern on cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors but clinical trial evidence is more limited.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the effectiveness of a Mediterranean-style diet for the primary and secondary prevention of CVD.
SEARCH METHODS: We searched the following electronic databases: the Co

Background/Objectives: Research across multiple disciplines has explored how nutrition is shaped by social isolation and feelings of loneliness, especially in the elderly population. Evidence from neuroscience highlights that loneliness may alter eating patterns, encouraging emotional eating or other compensatory food behaviors. Conversely, isolation from social contexts is often linked to a reduced variety of nutrient intake. This study set out to examine how psychosocial aspects, particularly social connectedness and feeling alone, relate to adherence to the Mediterranean diet among older ad

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The Mediterranean diet (MD) and regular physical activity are established components of cardiovascular prevention, but evidence regarding their combined cardiometabolic effects remains heterogeneous.
OBJECTIVE: This narrative review critically summarizes current evidence on the joint role of the MD and physical exercise in cardiometabolic health.
METHODS: A structured literature search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus using terms related to the MD, CVD, cardiometabolic he

INTRODUCTION: Preeclampsia, affecting 2-5% of pregnancies globally, represents a significant challenge in maternal-fetal medicine with substantial morbidity and mortality. Anti-inflammatory dietary patterns, particularly the Mediterranean diet, may ameliorate preeclampsia risk through modulation of inflammatory mediators, oxidative stress, and vascular function. Current findings regarding diet and preeclampsia prevention exhibit considerable variability. We conducted a comprehensive review to evaluate the association between the Mediterranean diet and other anti-inflammatory dietary patterns w

Background: Neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease, are among the leading causes of disability and mortality worldwide. Dietary patterns have emerged as modifiable risk factors that may influence disease onset and progression. The Mediterranean diet (MedDiet), rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, fish, and extra virgin olive oil, has been consistently associated with better cognitive outcomes and reduced risk of neurodegeneration. Aim: This narrative review summarizes current evidence on the role of the MedDiet in slowing the progression

INTRODUCTION: Acne vulgaris is chronic skin condition with considerable physical, psychological, social, and economic impacts. Adherence to Western diets with a high glycemic index and dairy content has been linked to acne. However, the associations between acne and the Mediterranean diet (MD), a non-Western diet, have not been reviewed. This review aimed to examine the associations between adherence to the MD and the development and severity of acne vulgaris.

Background/Objectives: Adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD) is a metabolic disorder caused by dysfunctional peroxisomal beta-oxidation of very-long-chain fatty acids (VLCFAs). A VLCFA-restricted Mediterranean diet has been proposed for patients and carriers to reduce daily VLCFA intake. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated plasma VLCFAs in a cohort of 36 patients and 20 carriers at baseline and after 1 year of restricted diet. Results: At T1, compliant adult patients had significantly lower C26:0 levels [1.7 (1.2) vs. 2.5 µmol/L (1.7), p < 0.05], C26:0/C22:0 ratio [0.04 (0.02) vs. 0.06 (0.03), p < 0.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of mortality and disease burden in women globally. A healthy diet is important for the prevention of CVD. Research has consistently favoured the Mediterranean diet as a cardio-protective diet. Several studies have evaluated associations between the Mediterranean diet and cardiovascular outcomes, including traditional risk factors like hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and obesity. In addition, consistent evidence suggests that the components of the Mediterranean diet have a synergistic effect on cardiovascular risk due to its anti-inflammat

OBJECTIVE: Currently, esterility affects between 15% and 20% of couples of fertile age. Female reproductive success is mainly determined by age and ovarian reserve (OR). Recent studies highlight the influence of modifiable factors such as dietary habits and nutritional status on OR. In this regard, the Mediterranean Diet (MD) is postulated as a standard of healthy eating. Therefore, the objective of this paper was to analyze the influence of adherence to DM and nutritional status on the OR of infertile women.
METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out, lasting one year, betw

The Mediterranean diet (MD) is a healthy diet pattern that can prevent chronic age-related diseases, especially age-related eye diseases (AREDs) including cataract, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy (DR) and dry eye syndrome (DES). In this study, we systematically reviewed studies in the literature that had reported associations between adherence to the MD and the five above-mentioned AREDs. Randomized controlled trials as well as prospective and retrospective observational studies were included; 1164 studies were identified, of which 1, 2, 9, 2 and 4 studi

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which is common in women of reproductive age worldwide, is a syndrome that reduces the lifelong quality of life and poses a significant risk for various diseases. PCOS is a combination of symptoms of hyperandrogenism, oligo-anovulation, and polycystic ovarian morphology (PCOM). In PCOS, which is characterized by chronic low-grade inflammation, some inflammatory cytokines are increased. This review aimed to explain possible mechanisms of inflammation in PCOS and the effects of Mediterranean diet components on reducing this inflammation.

Several studies through the years have proven how an unhealthy nutrition, physical inactivity, sedentary lifestyle, obesity, and smoking represent relevant risk factors in cancer genesis. This study aims to provide an overview about the relationship between meningiomas and food assumption in the Mediterranean diet and whether it can be useful in meningioma prevention or it, somehow, can prevent their recurrence. The authors performed a wide literature search in PubMed and Scopus databases investigating the presence of a correlation between Mediterranean diet and meningiomas. The following MeSH
