The importance of egg protein in reduced protein diets designed for dogs with renal failure.

The effects of two reduced-protein diets and a canine maintenance diet on renal function, nutrition, serum and urine acid-base and electrolyte values, and divalent ion metabolism were compared in Beagle dogs with induced chronic renal failure. Two reduced-protein (18%) diets differed in their protein sources. One 18% protein diet was formulated using egg protein as the only protein source. The other 18% protein diet was formulated using a mixture of animal and vegetable proteins. The 42% protein diet contained a mixture of animal and vegetable protein sources. Results of this study indicate th

Silicon Alleviates Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis by Reducing Apoptosis in Aged Wistar Rats Fed a High-Saturated Fat, High-Cholesterol Diet.

Background: Lipoapoptosis has been identified as a key event in the progression of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and hence, antiapoptotic agents have been recommended as a possible effective treatment for nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Silicon, included in meat as a functional ingredient, improves lipoprotein profiles and liver antioxidant defenses in aged rats fed a high-saturated fat, high-cholesterol diet (HSHCD). However, to our knowledge, the antiapoptotic effect of this potential functional meat on the liver has never been tested. Objective: This study was designed to ev

High-protein diet more effectively reduces hepatic fat than low-protein diet despite lower autophagy and FGF21 levels.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is becoming increasingly prevalent and nutrition intervention remains the most important therapeutic approach for NAFLD. Our aim was to investigate whether low- (LP) or high-protein (HP) diets are more effective in reducing liver fat and reversing NAFLD and which mechanisms are involved. METHODS: 19 participants with morbid obesity undergoing bariatric surgery were randomized into two hypocaloric (1500-1600 kcal/day) diet groups, a low protein (10E% protein) and a high protein (30E% protein), for three weeks prior to surgery. A high-fat diet supplemented with medium-chain triglycerides ameliorates hepatic steatosis by reducing ceramide and diacylglycerol accumulation in mice.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is projected to be the most common chronic liver disease worldwide and is closely linked to obesity, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Currently, no pharmacological treatments are available to treat NAFLD, and lifestyle modification, including dietary interventions, is the only remedy. Therefore, we conducted a study to determine whether supplementation with medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), containing a mixture of C8 and C10 (60/40), attenuates NAFLD in obese and insulin-resistant mice. To achieve that, we fed C57BL/6 male mice a high-fat diet

Liver-specific mitochondrial amidoxime-reducing component 1 (Mtarc1) knockdown protects the liver from diet-induced MASH in multiple mouse models.

BACKGROUND: Human genetic studies have identified several mitochondrial amidoxime-reducing component 1 (MTARC1) variants as protective against metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease. The MTARC1 variants are associated with decreased plasma lipids and liver enzymes and reduced liver-related mortality. However, the role of mARC1 in fatty liver disease is still unclear. METHODS: Given that mARC1 is mainly expressed in hepatocytes, we developed an N-acetylgalactosamine-conjugated mouse Mtarc1 siRNA, applying it in multiple in vivo models to investigate the role of mARC1 using mu

Gab2 deficiency suppresses high-fat diet-induced obesity by reducing adipose tissue inflammation and increasing brown adipose function in mice.

Obesity is caused by a long-term imbalance between energy intake and consumption and is regulated by multiple signals. This study investigated the effect of signaling scaffolding protein Gab2 on obesity and its relevant regulation mechanism. Gab2 knockout (KO) and wild-type (WT) mice were fed with a standard diet (SD) or high-fat diet (HFD) for 12 weeks. The results showed that the a high-fat diet-induced Gab2 expression in adipose tissues, but deletion of Gab2 attenuated weight gain and improved glucose tolerance in mice fed with a high-fat diet. The role of the Mediterranean diet in reducing the risk of cognitive impairement, dementia, and Alzheimer's disease: a meta-analysis.

Age-related cognitive impairment and dementia pose a significant global health, social, and economic challenge. While Alzheimer's disease (AD) has historically been viewed as the leading cause of dementia, recent evidence reveals the considerable impact of vascular cognitive impairment and dementia (VCID), which now accounts for nearly half of all dementia cases. The Mediterranean diet-characterized by high consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, and olive oil-has been widely recognized for its cardiovascular benefits and may also reduce the risk of cognitive decline and dementi

Roflumilast ameliorates GAN diet-induced non-alcoholic fatty liver disease by reducing hepatic steatosis and fibrosis in ob/ob mice.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a highly prevalent progressive liver disease. Currently, there is only one drug for NAFLD treatment, and the options are limited. Phosphodiesterase-4 (PDE-4) inhibitors have potential in treating NAFLD. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effect of roflumilast on NAFLD. Here, we fed ob/ob mice to induce the NAFLD model by GAN diet. Roflumilast (1 mg/kg) was administered orally once daily. Semaglutide (20 nmol/kg), used as a positive control, was injected subcutaneously once daily. Our findings showed that roflumilast has beneficial effects

[Changes in the indices of fat metabolism in obesity during physical activity, on a reducing diet and during meterological influences].

Clinical experimental investigations were carried out of 96 patients with light, nutritional-metabolism forms of obesity under the conditions of a moderately high mountain (1870 m above the sea level). After a treatment course of 20--25 days including: reducing diet, physical loading and cool sun-air exposure, a significant decrease of a wide spectrum of lipid indices was found, namely: total lipids, triglycerides, total cholesterol, phospholipids and beta-lipoproteins. A significant correlation was established between cholesterol decrease and beta-lipoproteins with body weight reduction over

High Fat Diet Alters Gastrointestinal Function and Results in Reduced Enteric Neuron Density.

INTRODUCTION: Obese patients suffer from cardiovascular, metabolic and gastrointestinal disorders, including constipation, proposed to result from high fat diet (HFD)-induced enteric neuron loss. However, these studies used high-fat purified diets, containing reduced amounts of fiber compared to non-purified diets, known to alter gut physiology and microbiome composition. Therefore, we evaluated the effect of purified HFD-induced obesity on enteric neuron density and gastrointestinal transit compared to its proper control diet, that is, a purified control diet. METHODS: Wild type mice were fe

Optimizing Energy Structure in Low-Protein Diets Reduced Body Fat Deposition in Geese.

This study examined the effects of dietary crude protein (CP) level and starch: fat ratio (SFR) on glucose and lipid metabolism in geese. A total of 360 male Jiangnan White geese were allocated to a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement with two CP levels (14.5% and 16.5%) and three SFRs (SFR20:1, SFR11:1, and SFR5:1) from 28 to 63 days of age. Under the low-protein condition, Both the SFR11:1 and SFR5:1 group enhanced body weight of geese at 63 d, but SFR 5:1 increased subcutaneous and abdominal fat deposition. Dietary SFR changed liver cholesterol metabolism and glycogen content, while CP levels mainl

Diet-induced dampness-heat psoriasis is characterized by reduced Lactobacillus and accumulation of deoxycholic acid.

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis is a common immune-mediated skin disease influenced by environmental and dietary factors. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), endogenous dampness-heat syndrome, often induced by diets rich in stimulating foods, is considered a trigger that aggravates psoriasis. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study investigated the gut microbiota and metabolic alterations associated with endogenous dampness-heat syndrome in psoriasis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: BALB/c mice were fed a stimulating food diet to establish a model of endogenous dampness-heat syndrome, f

Uridine diphosphate glucose reduces embryonic and diet-induced hepatic lipid accumulation in chickens.

Fatty Liver Hemorrhagic Syndrome (FLHS) is a prevalent metabolic disease in poultry, marked by severe fat buildup in the liver that compromises health and productivity. To investigate the effects of uridine diphosphate glucose (UDPG) on hepatic lipid metabolism in chickens, this study employed online software to predict UDPG binding to the lipid synthesis regulator site-1 protease (S1P) protein. Subsequent administration via allantoic membrane injections (AMI) and amniotic cavity injections (ACI) during embryonic development demonstrated that UDPG significantly reduced hepatic triglyceride (TG

Methyl supplemented diet reduces liver pathology in lupus-prone MRL/lpr mice.

Genetic predisposition is a necessary but not sufficient requirement for the development of a pathological immune response in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Various environmental factors and nutrition in particular also play a key role in the pathogenesis of SLE. In the present study, we evaluated the effect of a specific diet containing additional amounts of methyl donors on the development of pathological changes in the liver of lupus-prone MRL/lpr mice. The results showed that long-term administration of the diet reduced the level of inflammation and the number of inflammatory cells in
