Position statement on nutrition therapy for overweight and obesity: nutrition department of the Brazilian association for the study of obesity and metabolic syndrome (ABESO-2022).

Obesity is a chronic disease resulting from multifactorial causes mainly related to lifestyle (sedentary lifestyle, inadequate eating habits) and to other conditions such as genetic, hereditary, psychological, cultural, and ethnic factors. The weight loss process is slow and complex, and involves lifestyle changes with an emphasis on nutritional therapy, physical activity practice, psychological interventions, and pharmacological or surgical treatment. Because the management of obesity is a long-term process, it is essential that the nutritional treatment contributes to the maintenance of the

The Significant Impact of High-Fat, Low-Carbohydrate Ketogenic Diet on Serum Lipid Profile and Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease Risk in Overweight and Obese Adults.

Background and objectives Overweight and obesity are becoming more commonplace globally. The ketogenic diet (KD), also known as the high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet, has become increasingly popular in recent years as a means to lose weight quickly. This present study aims to examine the clinical effects of ketogenic diets in individuals who are obese or overweight by evaluating or assessing variations in metabolic parameters associated with lipid control, the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, and other kidney risk indicators. Methods and subjects This observational case-control re

Effects of methodological variation on assessment of riboflavin status using the erythrocyte glutathione reductase activation coefficient assay.

Riboflavin status is usually measured as the in vitro stimulation with flavin adenine dinucleotide of the erythrocyte enzyme glutathione reductase, and expressed as an erythrocyte glutathione reductase activation coefficient (EGRAC). This method is used for the National Diet and Nutrition Surveys (NDNS) of the UK. In the period between the 1990 and 2003 surveys of UK adults, the estimated prevalence of riboflavin deficiency, expressed as an EGRAC value > or = 1.30, increased from 2 to 46 % in males and from 1 to 34 % in females. We hypothesised that subtle but important differences in the deta

Effect of respiratory infection on tissue riboflavin and flavin enzymes in mice.

The effects of Klebsiella pneumoniae infection on red blood cell and liver riboflavin levels and a few flavin enzymes were examined to verify our earlier hypothesis based on human experience that upper respiratory infections result in mobilization of riboflavin from tissues into blood, resulting in a rise in red blood cell riboflavin and an increased saturation of erythrocyte glutathione reductase (EGR) with its coenzyme flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD; reduction in EGR activation coefficient, AC, values). Thirty-six-day-old male mice fed a diet marginally sufficient in riboflavin were inject

Emerging roles for riboflavin in functional rescue of mitochondrial β-oxidation flavoenzymes.

Riboflavin, commonly known as vitamin B2, is the precursor of flavin cofactors. It is present in our typical diet, and inside the cells it is metabolized to FMN and FAD. As a result of their rather unique and flexible chemical properties these flavins are among the most important redox cofactors present in a large series of different enzymes. A problem in riboflavin metabolism or a low intake of this vitamin will have consequences on the level of FAD and FMN in the cell, resulting in disorders associated with riboflavin deficiency. In a few number of cases, riboflavin deficiency is associated

Molecular Mechanisms Associated with Metabolic Dysfunction: Contributions of Nutritional Genomics.

Nutritional genomics has expanded our understanding of how dietary exposures interact with genetic and epigenetic mechanisms involved in metabolic dysfunction. In this context, metabolic dysfunction associated with excessive visceral adiposity arises from a multifaceted interaction between systemic inflammation, insulin resistance, and inter-individual biological susceptibility. Obesity, particularly when driven by diets rich in saturated fatty acids, disrupts intestinal homeostasis, thereby triggering metabolic endotoxemia and contributing to low-grade systemic inflammation and adipose tissue

Can a Micronutrient Mixture Delay the Onset and Progression of Symptoms of Single-Point Mutation Diseases?

Single-point mutation diseases in which substitution of one nucleotide with another in a gene occurs include familial Alzheimer's disease (fAD), familial Parkinson's disease (fPD), and familial Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease (fCJD) as well as Huntington's disease (HD), sickle cell anemia, and hemophilia. Inevitability of occurrence of these diseases is certain. However, the time of appearance of symptoms could be influenced by the diet, environment, and possibly other genetic factors. There are no effective approaches to delay the onset or progression of symptoms of these diseases. The fact that in

Interactions between the lipidome and genetic and environmental factors in autism.

Autism omics research has historically been reductionist and diagnosis centric, with little attention paid to common co-occurring conditions (for example, sleep and feeding disorders) and the complex interplay between molecular profiles and neurodevelopment, genetics, environmental factors and health. Here we explored the plasma lipidome (783 lipid species) in 765 children (485 diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD)) within the Australian Autism Biobank. We identified lipids associated with ASD diagnosis (n = 8), sleep disturbances (n = 20) and cognitive function (n = 8) and found that

Similarities between rat liver mitochondrial and cytosolic glutathione reductases and their apoenzyme accumulation in riboflavin deficiency.

Glutathione reductase has been purified 5,500-fold from rat liver mitochondrial matrix in a yield of 30%. The mitochondrial enzyme was immunochemically indistinguishable from that of the cytosol and the subunit molecular weight was apparently similar to that of the cytosolic enzyme, that is, 50,000 daltons. The optimum pH and kinetic properties investigated were not significantly different from those of the cytosolic enzyme. When rats were fed a riboflavin-deficient diet, the enzyme activity in the mitochondria decreased to a greater extent than that in the cytosol, and greater accumulation of

Myths and Facts Regarding Low-Carbohydrate Diets.

As the prevalence of chronic diseases persists at epidemic proportions, health practitioners face ongoing challenges in providing effective lifestyle treatments for their patients. Even for those patients on GLP-1 agonists, nutrition counseling remains a crucial strategy for managing these conditions over the long term. This paper aims to address the concerns of patients and practitioners who are interested in a low-carbohydrate or ketogenic diet, but who have concerns about its efficacy, safety, and long-term viability. The authors of this paper are practitioners who have used this approach a

Effects of different dietary restriction regimens on cognitive function and pathological markers in Alzheimer's disease mouse models: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Dietary restriction (DR) has emerged as a promising non-pharmacological intervention for Alzheimer's disease (AD). This systematic review and meta-analysis provides the first comprehensive comparison of five dietary restriction regimens in Alzheimer's disease mouse models. Analysis of 23 studies demonstrates that caloric restriction yields the most consistent benefits. While intermittent fasting exhibits model-dependent efficacy-improving recognition memory but exacerbating neuroinflammation in 5 ×FAD models. The fasting-mimicking diet showed the largest effect size. From a geroscience perspec

Recovery from impairment in feeding response to glucoprivic stimuli and in sensitivity to diabetogenic agents in riboflavin-repleted rats.

Male weanling rats, fed a riboflavin-deficient diet for 14 days showed impairments in reactivity to the hyperphagic action of either insulin or 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2DG) and in sensitivity to the diabetogenic action of streptozotocin or alloxan. The intraperitoneal injection of riboflavin (160 micrograms/rat) resulted in an immediate restoration in FAD-dependent activation of erythrocyte glutathione reductase and in the reactivity of food intake to insulin, whereas the reactivity of food intake to 2DG was restored after 3 days of riboflavin repletion. The sensitivity to diabetogenic agents was n

Effects of riboflavin deficiency on the lipid metabolism of duck breeders and duck embryos.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of dietary riboflavin deficiency (RD) on the lipid metabolism of duck breeders and duck embryos. A total of 40 female 40-wk-old white Pekin duck breeders were randomly divided into 2 groups, received either RD diet (1.48 mg riboflavin/kg) or control diet (16.48 mg riboflavin/kg, CON) for 14 wk. Each group consisted of 20 duck breeders (10 replicates per group, 2 birds per replicate), and all experiment birds were single-caged. At the end of the experiment, reproductive performance, hepatic riboflavin, hepatic flavin mononucleotide (FMN), hepatic flavin

When Somatic Delusions Meet Cyberchondria: An Unusual Case of Vitamin D Toxicity.

Patients with somatic delusional disorder are firmly convinced that something is wrong with their bodies and are often referred from one specialist to another without receiving a clear diagnosis. Some of these patients may turn to complementary or alternative medicine based on information found through online health searches. However, online health content is not regulated for quality, and much of it is inaccurate or potentially harmful, including fad diets and vitamin supplement advice from celebrity doctors. We present the case of a patient who believed he had Huntington's disease and develo

Riboflavin Deficiency-Implications for General Human Health and Inborn Errors of Metabolism.

As an essential vitamin, the role of riboflavin in human diet and health is increasingly being highlighted. Insufficient dietary intake of riboflavin is often reported in nutritional surveys and population studies, even in non-developing countries with abundant sources of riboflavin-rich dietary products. A latent subclinical riboflavin deficiency can result in a significant clinical phenotype when combined with inborn genetic disturbances or environmental and physiological factors like infections, exercise, diet, aging and pregnancy. Riboflavin, and more importantly its derivatives, flavin mo

Trace elements: implications for nursing.

Although most were unknown a few years ago, present evidence indicates that at least 25 trace elements have some pertinence to health. Unlike vitamins, they cannot be synthesized. Some trace elements are now considered important only because of their harmful effects but traces of them may be essential. Zinc is especially important during puberty, pregnancy and menopause and is related to protein metabolism. Both fluoride and cadmium accumulate in the body year after year. Cadmium is positively correlated with several chronic diseases, especially hypertension. It is obtained from smoking and dr
