[Influence of stress on gastroenteric electric activity and modulated effect of acupuncture on it in rats].

Experiments were performed in SD rats. Three pairs of bipolar electrode were implanted surgically on the antrum, ascending and descending colon of rats. The stress model was induced by restraint cold immersion (4 degrees C Water, 30-40 min.). The modulating effect of Zusanli ST36 acupuncture on gastroenteric electric activity was investigated. The inhibitory effects of gastro-colon electric activity were obviously displayed in stress rats, such as the frequency and amplitude of slow wave were reduced, rhythmic disorder, degree of dispersion was enlarged, fast wave was decreased and the IDMEC p

An update on the cecectomy technique in roosters anesthetized with isoflurane used in subsequent amino acid digestibility experiments.

This work aims to study an alternative technique of cecectomy in roosters using inhalation anesthesia for subsequent use in digestibility experiments. A total of 30 adult chickens of Leghorn breed were used with an average age of 27 wk. The birds were preoxygenated, and the anesthetic induction was performed using isoflurane diluted in oxygen. After proper muscle relaxation, endotracheal intubation was performed using a Murphy catheter and kept in anesthesia under mechanical ventilation with a constant monitoring of electrocardiography variables, heart rate, oxyhemoglobin saturation, and body

Growth, development and differentiation: a functional food science approach.

Few other aspects of food supply and metabolism are of greater biological importance than the feeding of mothers during pregnancy and lactation, and of their infants and young children. Nutritional factors during early development not only have short-term effects on growth, body composition and body functions but also exert long-term effects on health, disease and mortality risks in adulthood, as well as development of neural functions and behaviour, a phenomenon called 'metabolic programming'. The interaction of nutrients and gene expression may form the basis of many of these programming eff

Modulation of stomatogastric rhythms.

Neuromodulation by peptides and amines is a primary source of plasticity in the nervous system as it adapts the animal to an ever-changing environment. The crustacean stomatogastric nervous system is one of the premier systems to study neuromodulation and its effects on motor pattern generation at the cellular level. It contains the extensively modulated central pattern generators that drive the gastric mill (chewing) and pyloric (food filtering) rhythms. Neuromodulators affect all stages of neuronal processing in this system, from membrane currents and synaptic transmission in network neurons

Suppressive control of the crustacean pyloric network by a pair of identified interneurons. II. Modulation of neuronal properties.

In the lobster Homarus, the 2 identified PS neurons have a strong suppressive modulatory effect on the activity of the pyloric network in the STG (Cazalets et al., 1990). In the present paper, we consider the effects of PS on individual pyloric neurons isolated from their partners in the network by cell photoinactivation and synaptic blockade. Three types of PS action are described: (1) a transient, EPSP-mediated depolarization of the PD, VD, and AB neurons; (2) a long-lasting hyperpolarization concomitant with a loss of oscillatory properties in the PD and LP neurons; (3) a long-lasting depol

Effects of dietary incorporation of Radix rehmanniae praeparata polysaccharide on growth performance, digestive physiology, blood metabolites, meat quality, and tibia characteristics in broiler chickens.

Radix rehmanniae preparata polysaccharide (RRPP) is recognized as the primary bioactive compound in Radix rehmanniae preparata and has been extensively utilized in traditional Chinese medicine and functional food due to its diverse biological activities. However, this study has yet to explore the application of RRPP as a feed additive in broilers. This study investigated the effects of dietary RRPP on growth performance, meat quality, and physiological responses of broiler chickens. Two hundred eighty-eight 1-day-old Cobb 500 male broilers were randomly assigned to the 4 experimental groups wi

Understanding the biology and control of the poultry red mite Dermanyssus gallinae: a review.

Dermanyssus gallinae, the poultry red mite (PRM), is a blood-feeding ectoparasite capable of causing pathology in birds, amongst other animals. It is an increasingly important pathogen in egg layers and is responsible for substantial economic losses to the poultry industry worldwide. Even though PRM poses a serious problem, very little is known about the basic biology of the mite. Here we review the current body of literature describing red mite biology and discuss how this has been, or could be, used to develop methods to control PRM infestations. We focus primarily on the PRM digestive syste

Neural-immune gut-brain communication in the anorexia of disease.

Peripheral administration of toxic bacterial products and cytokines have been used to model the immunological, physiological, and behavioral responses to infection, including the anorexia of disease. The vagus nerve is the major neuroanatomic linkage between gut sites exposed to peripheral endotoxins and cytokines and the central nervous system regions that mediate the control of food intake, and thus has been a major research focus of the neurobiological approach to understanding cytokine-induced anorexia. Molecular biological and neurophysiologic evidence demonstrates that peripheral anorect

Structure and function of the gastrointestinal tract of the Florida manatee, Trichechus manatus latirostris.

BACKGROUND: The Florida manatee, Trichechus manatus latirostris (Sirenia: Trichechidae), is the largest herbivorous marine mammal. Previously, components of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract of the species have been described, but no comprehensive descriptions of the gross and microscopic anatomy existed. This study integrates function and structure of the entire Florida manatee GI tract. METHODS: The GI tracts of several recently dead Florida manatees were examined from the following viewpoints: gross anatomical studies of preserved and unpreserved specimens, histology and histochemistry, and

Gummivory and gut morphology in two sympatric callitrichids (Callithrix emiliae and Saguinus fuscicollis weddelli) from western Brazilian Amazonia.

A comparative analysis of the gastrointestinal tracts of wild-caught marmosets, Callithrix emiliae, and tamarins, Saguinus fuscicollis weddelli, was undertaken in order to evaluate the degree of specialisation for digestion of plant exudates. Compared to S.f. weddelli, C. emiliae exhibits a reduced small intestine and a relatively large, compartmentalised caecum in which gum is probably fermented. The apparent specialisation of the digestive tract in C. emiliae correlates with that of its dentition, which is adapted for gouging the bark of gum-producing plants. A similar degree of specialisati

Synergisms, Discrepancies and Interactions between Hydrogen Sulfide and Carbon Monoxide in the Gastrointestinal and Digestive System Physiology, Pathophysiology and Pharmacology.

Endogenous gas transmitters, hydrogen sulfide (H2S), carbon monoxide (CO) and nitric oxide (NO) are important signaling molecules known to exert multiple biological functions. In recent years, the role of H2S, CO and NO in regulation of cardiovascular, neuronal and digestive systems physiology and pathophysiology has been emphasized. Possible link between these gaseous mediators and multiple diseases as well as potential therapeutic applications has attracted great attention from biomedical scientists working in many fields of biomedicine. Thus, various pharmacological tools with ability to re

Phase maintenance in the pyloric pattern of the lobster (Panulirus interruptus) stomatogastric ganglion.

The extent to which individual neural networks can produce phase-constant motor patterns as cycle frequency is altered has not been studied extensively. I investigated this issue in the well-defined, rhythmic pyloric neural network. When pyloric cycle frequency is altered three- to fivefold, pyloric inter-neuronal delays shift by hundreds to thousands of msec, and all pyloric pattern elements show strong phase maintenance. The experimental paradigm used is unlikely to activate exogenous inputs to the network, and these delay changes are thus likely to arise from phase-compensatory mechanisms i

Trimebutine: a state-of-the-art review.

Trimebutine maleate has been used extensively, since the late 1960's, for the treatment of functional gastrointestinal disorders, including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). It is usually linked to the antispasmodic class of agents, but its properties make trimebutine an unmatched and multi-tasking compound. The efficacy on relieving abdominal pain has been demonstrated in various clinical studies with different protocols of treatment. The main effect was first believed to be merely due to its antispastic activity, but further evidences expanded the acknowledgement of a broader impact on the gas

[Positive effects of wheat bran for digestive health; scientific evidence].

Wheat bran (ST) is very rich in insoluble fiber, consisting mainly arabinoxylans and, to a lesser extent, cellulose and β-glucans, as well as vitamins, minerals and antioxidants polyphenolic. The ST is involved in the regulation of gastrointestinal physiology and health: delayed gastric emptying and intestinal transit speeds and increases fecal bulk. The ST has an effect on faecal bulking greater than other grains such as oats or vegetables and fruits. However, phytic acid present in the bran may reduce the absorption of certain minerals (Ca, Mg, Fe and Zn), due to formation phytate-mineral co
