Acute periungueal dermatitis induced by application of urea-containing cream under occlusion.

BACKGROUND: Urea containing topical products are extensively marked for treatment of nail diseases. Side effects are rare and mainly include irritation of the periungual skin, when topicals with high urea concentration are applied too widely on the digit, or covered by tape. MAIN OBSERVATION: We report a case of a 84-year-old man with an erosive-bullous eruption of the 1st and the 2nd left toes due to application of an urea-containing cream, that he had regularly applied every night covering the digit with a plastic bandage. Suspecting an allergic contact dermatitis, we performed patch test w

Polymelia and Syndactyly in a Swainson's Hawk (Buteo swainsoni).

A hatch-year Swainson's Hawk (Buteo swainsoni) recovered from Modoc County, California, US, on 12 August 2012 had malformations of the rear limbs consisting of bilateral polymelia and syndactyly. We describe the malformations and evaluate potential causes. Postmortem examination revealed varus rotation of both femurs and abnormal appendages originating from the distal medial surface of the tibiotarsi with two nonfunctional digits on the right leg and one digit on the left leg. There was syndactyly between digits III and IV of both feet. Avian pox viral dermatitis was present on the skin of the

Treponema spp. spirochetes and keratinopathogenic fungi isolated from keratomas in donkeys.

Keratoma is an aberrant keratin mass thought to originate from epidermal horn-producing cells interposed between the stratum medium of the hoof wall and the underlying third phalanx. The cause is unknown, although the presence of keratomas is frequently associated with chronic irritation, focal infection, or trauma. A total of 167 donkeys with keratomas were presented in this study. The diagnosis of a keratoma was based on clinical signs, radiography, and histopathologic examination. Surgical excision was attempted on all donkeys with lameness unless euthanasia was advised. Histopathologic exa

Hallopeau's acrodermatitis continua of the nail apparatus: a clinical and pathological study of 20 patients.

The clinical diagnosis of Hallopeau's acrodermatitis (HA) restricted to nail and digital pulp may be difficult, and even dermatologists often fail to recognize this condition. The aim of this study was to review the clinical and pathological features of 20 patients, observed over a period of 5 years (1988-1993), who were affected by HA limited to the nails. Our study shows that HA of the nail unit more commonly affects middle-aged females. In all our patients HA of the nail was restricted to one digit and not associated with other manifestations of pustular psoriasis. HA of the nail unit is ch

Cost of lameness in dairy herds: An integrated bioeconomic modeling approach.

Foot disorders are costly health disorders in dairy farms, and their prevalence is related to several factors such as breed, nutrition, and farmer's management strategy. Very few modeling approaches have considered the dynamics of foot disorders and their interaction with farm management strategies within a holistic farm simulation model. The aim of this study was to estimate the cost of foot disorders in dairy herds by simulating strategies for managing lameness. A dynamic and stochastic simulation model (DairyHealthSim) was used to simulate the herd dynamics, reproduction management, and hea

Genome-wide association and functional genomic analyses for various hoof health traits in North American Holstein cattle.

Hoof diseases are a major welfare and economic issue in the global dairy cattle production industry, which can be minimized through improved management and breeding practices. Optimal genetic improvement of hoof health could benefit from a deep understanding of the genetic background and biological underpinning of indicators of hoof health. Therefore, the primary objectives of this study were to perform genome-wide association studies, using imputed high-density genetic markers data from North American Holstein cattle, for 8 hoof-related traits: digital dermatitis, sole ulcer, sole hemorrhage,

Heel erosion and other interdigital disorders in dairy cows: associations with season, cow characteristics, disease, and production.

Epidemiologic associations between variables obtainable from dairy cow records and the occurrence of heel erosion, interdigital dermatitis, and interdigital hyperplasia at claw trimmings were estimated with multivariable logistic regression analysis on data from 1170 and 542 cows in lactation 1 and lactations 2 to 9, respectively. In the 17 herds, heel erosion, interdigital dermatitis, and hyperplasia occurred among 43.8, 4.5, and .9% of cows in lactation 1 and among 69.1, 7.6 and 5.9% of cows in lactations 2 to 9, respectively. Severity of heel erosion increased with parity, and risk increase

Dissecting the molecular diversity and commonality of bovine and human treponemes identifies key survival and adhesion mechanisms.

Here, we report the first complete genomes of three cultivable treponeme species from bovine digital dermatitis (DD) skin lesions, two comparative human treponemes, considered indistinguishable from bovine DD species, and a bovine gastrointestinal (GI) treponeme isolate. Key genomic differences between bovine and human treponemes implicate microbial mechanisms that enhance knowledge of how DD, a severe disease of ruminants, has emerged into a prolific, worldwide disease. Bovine DD treponemes have additional oxidative stress genes compared to nearest human-isolated relatives, suggesting better

Onycholysis induced by nail hardener.

Nail hardeners appeared in the market during the 1960s. They were basically solutions of formaldehyde. The first adverse effects were published in 1966 (1). Reactions were onycholysis, chromonychia, subungual haemorrhage, and hyperkeratosis. Onycholysis may be non-inflammatory or inflammatory, and is accompanied by throbbing pain. Inflammatory reactions are followed by paronychia and occasional dermatitis on the digital pulpa.

The utility of the DNA microarray scanner to simplify the immunofluorescence evaluation of autoimmune bullous diseases.

A DNA microarray scanner was used as a digital fluorescence microscope to simplify the diagnosis of autoimmune bullous diseases. Frozen sections of skin biopsies were taken from 3 patients with bullous pemphigoid and 1 patient each with lichen planus pemphigoides, linear immunoglobulin (Ig) A disease, and dermatitis herpetiformis. After incubation with cyanine-labeled antibodies, the tissues were scanned at 5-mum resolution using an instrument originally designed to study gene expression. The microarray scanner's large field of view, unlike that of fluorescence microscopy, allowed a view of th

Comments on Dermatologists' TikTok Videos on Atopic Dermatitis: Content Analysis.

BACKGROUND: TikTok is one of the fastest-growing social media platforms in the world. It has become an important space for sharing information on a wide range of topics, including medical conditions such as atopic dermatitis (AD). Advice on skin conditions has become popular on TikTok, and most previous research in this area focuses on the credibility of the information being shared. However, little research has focused specifically on physician-created videos and their audience engagement and interaction. OBJECTIVE: Our study aimed to (1) characterize the audience's online response to board-

[Dermatitis herpetiformis. A clinical chameleon].

Celiac disease is a genetically determined bowel disease also influenced by exogenous factors in which exposure to grain components triggers a chronic immune response with intestinal symptoms. Dermatitis herpetiformis represents the cutaneous manifestation of celiac disease. While intense pruritus is the characteristic symptom, clinical signs can be highly variable, ranging from grouped papulovesicles with excoriations or eczema-like lesions to minimal variants of discrete erythema and digital purpura. Diagnosis depends on direct fluorescence studies of perilesional skin displaying granular Ig

Feasibility study in teledermatopathology: An examination of the histopathologic features of mycosis fungoides and spongiotic dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Digital pathology offers numerous advantages, allowing remote information sharing using whole slide imaging (WSI) to digitize an entire glass slide (GS) at high resolution, creating a digital slide (DS). METHODS: In this study, we examine the concordance in diagnoses made on 40 digital slides (DSs) vs traditional GSs in differentiating between spongiotic dermatitis (SD) and patch/plaque-stage mycosis fungoides (MF). RESULTS: Greater interobserver concordance rate in final diagnosis of SD vs MF was observed with the utilization of DS (86.7%) compared with the utilization of GS (80

Ovine lameness in Ireland: a survey-based investigation of farmer reported prevalence, recognition, and treatment of lameness conditions.

BACKGROUND: Ovine lameness represents a significant production and welfare challenge to farmers and comprises two main categories, infectious and non-infectious lameness. The leading infectious lameness conditions are interdigital dermatitis (ID), footrot (FR) and contagious ovine digital dermatitis (CODD). The predominant types of non-infectious foot conditions include toe granulomas (TG) and shelly hoof (white line disease; SH). There is a paucity of information available as to how Irish farmers treat infectious foot lesions in sheep. This study aimed to i) Establish farmer-reported prevalen

Gonococcemia mimicking a lupus flare in a young woman.

Gonorrhea is a common sexually transmitted infection, which can present as the 'arthritis-dermatitis syndrome'. Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus often develop disseminated neisserial infections, because of inherited and acquired complement deficiencies. Neisserial infection, and particularly gonococcemia, can mimic a lupus flare. We report one case of gonococcemia presenting as acral papulo-vesiculous lesions of the digits in a young woman with lupus.

Molecular detection and distribution of Treponema species in a commercial dairy cattle herd in Slovakia.

We analyzed the occurrence and distribution of selected Treponema species in dairy cows using 335 interdigital swabs, 335 fecal samples, and 25 surface swabs from bovine digital dermatitis (BDD) lesions. In surface swabs from BDD lesions, Treponema medium (92%), Treponema pedis (88%), and Treponema brennaborense (56%) were the most frequently detected species. Interdigital swabs from BDD-positive cows revealed the presence of T. medium in 40%, T. pedis in 12%, and T. brennaborense in 4% of samples. In the healthy group, T. medium was detected in 21.3%, T. pedis in 4.8%, and T. brennaborense in

Transmission and lesion progression of treponeme-associated hoof disease in captive elk (Cervus canadensis).

Treponeme-associated hoof disease (TAHD) is a debilitating disease of free-ranging elk (Cervus canadensis) in the northwestern U.S. While treponemes are associated with lesions, the etiology and transmissibility between elk are unknown. Our objective was to determine whether the disease can be environmentally transmitted to captive elk. Four individually housed treatment elk and 2 control elk were challenged with soil mixed with inoculum prepared from free-ranging elk hooves from TAHD-positive elk or autoclaved hooves from normal elk, respectively. The inoculum for each group was applied to th
