BACKGROUND: In adults, intravenous (IV) dihydroergotamine (DHE) has been shown to be effective at improving medium term outcomes in patients with chronic headache disorders. The IV formulation is utilized given its superior bioavailability. A prospective study of thrombo-embolism after total hip replacement in epidural analgesia was carried out in 116 patients, randomly allocated to dextran 70 or low-dose heparin combined with dihydroergotamine (HDHE).
