Human dirofilariasis due to Dirofilaria repens mimicking a scrotal tumor.

Dirofilariasis due to Dirofilaria repens is a rare anthropozoonotic disease, with dogs and cats being the definite hosts for this parasite. This worm is transmitted by various species of mosquitoes and usually presents as a subcutaneous nodule. Human cases have been reported from all around the Mediterranean, Eastern Europe, and Central and Southern Asia. In the present case involving a 28-year-old patient of Tunisian origin, infection manifested as a nodule in the left epididymis. In the context of increasing international travel and migration, dirofilariasis is a diagnosis that should be kep

Wolbachia in Dirofilaria repens, an agent causing human subcutaneous dirofilariasis.

Human subcutaneous dirofilariasis is an increasingly reported zoonosis caused by several filarial species, in particular by Dirofilaria (Nochtiella) repens. Like many filarial worms, D. repens harbors the bacterial endosymbiont Wolbachia that has been implicated in the inflammatory features of filarial infection. Immunohistochemical staining against the Wolbachia surface protein (WSP) was carried out on 14 skin nodules and showed numerous bacteria within the intact worms and occasional positive staining within the surrounding inflammatory infiltrate. Serum samples from 11 of these patients res

Human dirofilariasis caused by Dirofilaria (Nochtiella) repens in Sri Lanka.

Human dirofilariasis due to Dirofilaria (Nochtiella) repens is a common zoonotic infection in Sri Lanka. Todate 70 cases are on record, and they include 3 expatriates from Russia, England and Korea, who were undoubtedly infected in Sri Lanka. Around 30-60% of dogs are infected with D. repens in various parts of the country and the mosquito vectors are Aedes aegypti, Armigeres subalbatus, Mansonia uniformis and M. annulifera. Unlike in other countries of the old world infection is most common in children under the age of 9 years, the youngest being 4 months old and the scrotum, penis and perian

Molecular investigation of Dirofilaria repens, Dirofilaria immitis and Acanthocheilonema reconditum in stray dogs and cats in Ukraine.

BACKGROUND: The increasing population of stray dogs and cats in Ukraine poses an important risk of the transmission of vector-borne parasites, particularly Dirofilariarepens, Dirofilaria immitis and Acanthocheilonema reconditum, all of which are zoonotic and may affect human health. Despite numerous reports of human dirofilariosis in Ukraine, epidemiological data on these filarial parasites in companion animals remain limited. The aim of the study was to conduct a molecular epidemiological survey to assess the prevalence of filarial infections in stray dogs and cats across Ukraine and evaluate

The first report of Dirofilaria repens infection in dogs from Colombia.

Dirofilariasis is a mosquito-borne disease caused by Dirofilaria parasites, affecting both wild and domestic animals, including humans considered as accidental hosts. Dirofilaria repens is the principal causative agent of dirofilariasis in the Old World, with increasing reports of the parasite in countries where it has not been previously identified, due to several factors such as the expansion of mosquito vectors' geographical distribution. By utilizing newly designed primers for molecular detection and confirming through next-generation sequencing, here, we report the first plausible cases o

Nodular presentation of Dirofilaria repens infection in a cat mimicking a fibrosarcoma.

A cat with multiple subcutaneous nodules suggesting a soft tissue sarcoma by physical and computed tomographic examination was diagnosed as being affected by subcutaneous filariosis based on cytologic and ultrasonographic assessments. Nodules were surgically removed and extracted nematodes were identified by PCR as Dirofilaria repens. Furthermore, DNA of Dipetalonema dracunculoides (syn. Acantocheilonema dracunculoides) was detected by PCR, with no evidence of circulating microfilariae. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this represents the first report describing adults of D repens in mul

Climate suitability for the transmission of Dirofilaria immitis and D. repens in Germany.

Recently concerns are increasing that dirofilarial nematodes may spread from endemic areas in southern, eastern and central Europe to countries in northern regions of Europe. The increasing number of autochthonous cases of canine Dirofilaria repens infections in Germany indicates that worms of this genus may invade new areas, and climate change may be a key factor in this scenario. Thus analysis of long term development of regional temperature is a pivotal factor in risk analysis related to transmission of these worms. Such information is important for suggestions of counteracting strategies,

Treatment of Dirofilaria repens microfilariaemia with a combination of doxycycline hyclate and ivermectin.

Dirofilaria repens is one of the most widespread mosquito-borne filarioid responsible for infestations in dogs, usually characterized by nodules and other skin lesions. Additionally, the zoonotic potential of this nematode is of public health concern, given that D. repens has been often associated to human dirofilariosis in the Old World. In the present study, the therapeutic efficacy against D. repens microfilariae of a protocol based on doxycycline hyclate (Ronaxan(®), Merial), 10mg/kg every day for 30 days, and ivermectin (Cardotek 30(®), Merial), 6 μg/kg every 15 days for 6 months, was pre

Allergic dermatitis by Dirofilaria repens in a dog: clinical picture and treatment.

Adult stages of Dirofilaria repens (Nematoda, Filarioidea) reside in the subcutaneous tissues of the definitive or occasional host as dogs, other animals, and humans, and it is transmitted by mosquitoes. Canine infections with adults and circulating larvae of D. repens are often considered asymptomatic, although in some cases, the parasite causes subcutaneous nodules, diffused dermatitis, skin lesions, and itching. This report provides a complete clinical description of an unusual case of allergic diffused dermatitis caused by D. repens in a naturally infected dog and its successful treatment

The incrimination of Aedes (stegomyia) aegypti as the vector of Dirofilaria repens in Nigeria.

Six local species of culicides were identified as the common mosquitoes in Zaria, out of 15 species captured using various adult and larval collection methods. These common culicides are Culex pipiens fatigans, Anopheles gambiae grp., Mansonia africana, Culex pipiens pipiens, Aedes (stegomyia) aegypti and Aedes vittatus. They were each fed directly on a local dog naturally infected with Dirofilaria repens to evaluate their refractoriness/susceptibility to dirofilarial infection. In a number of donor-feeding trials, 39. 4% Culex pipiens fatigans; 58.9% An gambiae grp.; 60.5% Mansonia africana;

[A case of pleuropulmonary dirofilariasis caused by Dirofilaria repens. Case report].

The differential diagnosis of neoplasms of various localizations is the primary task in clinical practice of all physicians. We present a description of the case of invasion with Dirofilaria repens in the lung of a 68-year-old patient. In 2016 the patient was diagnosed with cancer of the left kidney and underwent a left-sided nephrectomy. During the dynamic observation in 2019, a lump was found in the left lung, which was regarded as a metastasis. An atypical SIX resection of the left lung was performed. Microscopy of the removed lump revealed the presence of a nematode of the genus Dirofilari

Updates on the distribution and host spectrum of Dirofilaria repens in the Republic of Uzbekistan.

Among the zoonotic mosquito-borne nematodes, Dirofilaria repens and Dirofilaria immitis (Spirurida, Onchocercidae) are highly significant from a public health perspective. While D. immitis is also of major veterinary concern, D. repens is regarded as less pathogenic for carnivores, but is the main causative agent of human dirofilariosis throughout the Old World. In the Republic of Uzbekistan, recent data refer exclusively to D. immitis infection in domestic and wild carnivores, while the current prevalence and distribution of D. repens remain unknown. Between 2015 and 2021, a total of 559 dome

Hematological and Biochemical Changes in Dogs Naturally Infected With Dirofilaria repens.

Subcutaneous dirofilariosis is a zoonotic disease emerging throughout Europe caused by the filarial nematode Dirofilaria repens. Despite its increasing prevalence, there is a large gap in knowledge of the impact of the parasite on the host. Currently classified as being non-pathogenic, recent evidence suggests that skin dirofilariosis is associated with dermatological conditions including concomitant pruritus, neoplastic processes, inflammation, and even blindness in dogs and humans. The aim of this study was to determine if natural canine D. repens infection leads to biological changes in the

Human dirofilariasis in the eyelid caused by Dirofilaria repens: An imported case.

CLINICAL CASE: The case concerns a 33-year-old Ukrainian woman, who came to the Ophthalmology Emergency Service, stating that she had a «worm» under the skin of her upper left eyelid that wriggled at night and bit her. A complete examination revealed a subcutaneous foreign body, which showed a filarial appearance and seemed to crawl under the skin. It was surgically removed to discover a live parasite, PCR-identified as Dirofilaria repens. DISCUSSION: Humans are accidental hosts in the cycle of Dirofilaria. There are only 8 reported cases of subcutaneous infection in Spain. Due to global warm

Dirofilariasis is a worldwide zoonotic filariasis with over 782 cases reported so far from different parts of the world. Human dirofilariasis, caused by Dirofilaria repens, have been reported to occur widely throughout Asia, Europe, and Africa. It has not been widely recognized in India, however; several cases have been reported in last few years. There is probably a focus of human infection with D. repens in Kerala. Herein, we present a review of human infections by D. repens, along with a case report of subconjunctival dirofilariasis from rural part of Gujarat.
