Assessing same/different judgments in individuals with severe intellectual disabilities: a status report.

This report summarizes state-of-the-art approaches for assessing visual stimulus same/different judgments in individuals with severe intellectual disabilities. Methods are described that permit one to conduct assessments on a population-wide basis, excluding few if any participants due to failure to acquire necessary baseline performances. Methodological investigations summarized here indicate that one can obtain reliable same/different judgments with a variety of stimuli in virtually anyone for whom a basal score on the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test can be obtained. This approach includes j

Exploring the experiences of ableism among Asian children and youth with disabilities and their families: a systematic review of qualitative studies.

PURPOSE: Asian children and youth with disabilities often experience multiple barriers, stigmas and discrimination within and outside their families; yet less is understood about their lived experiences. This systematic review explored the experiences of ableism among Asian children and youth with disabilities and their families. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of qualitative studies and a qualitative meta-synthesis. We searched six databases including Ovid Medline, Embase, PsychInfo, Healthstar, Web of Science, and Scopus. RESULTS: Forty-two articles met our inclusion criteria inv

Model development of a multivariable prediction model for long-term work-related neck disability among high risk occupations: A prospective cohort study.

Clinical prediction models have been identified as a research priority to identify individuals at risk of persistent musculoskeletal disability. As neck pain is a leading cause of disability among workers exposed to cumulative, repetitive and sustained force, model development in such populations is needed. This study describes the development of a clinical prediction model to predict moderate-to-severe neck disability, measured by the neck disability index (NDI≥22%) at 12-months. Sonographers working in Australia and New Zealand (n = 262) with and without neck disability completed questionnai

Anaesthesia geriatric evaluation to guide patient selection for preoperative multidisciplinary team care in cardiac surgery.

BACKGROUND: A multidisciplinary approach to improve postoperative outcomes in frail elderly patients is gaining interest. Multidisciplinary team care should be targeted at complex patients at high risk for adverse postoperative outcome to limit the strain on available resources and to prevent an unnecessary increase in patient burden. This study aimed to improve patient selection for multidisciplinary care by identifying risk factors for disability after cardiac surgery in elderly patients. METHODS: This was a two-centre prospective cohort study of 537 patients aged ≥70 yr undergoing elective

Associations of ethnic identity, religiosity, discrimination, and injustice appraisal with pain-related outcomes in arab americans with chronic back pain.

This study sought to examine the moderating roles of ethnic identity, acculturation, and religiosity on the relationship between pain-related injustice appraisal and chronic low back pain (CLBP) outcomes among a sample of Arab-Americans, who are an underrepresented population in prior pain research. The study also aimed to examine the mediating effect of pain-related injustice appraisal in the relationship between discrimination and CLBP outcomes. The sample included 96 Arab-American adults who completed an online survey concerning their CLBP. Multiple regression was used to examine the modera

Centering disability visibility in reproductive health care: Dismantling barriers to achieve reproductive equity.

Access to comprehensive and culturally competent reproductive health care is essential for individuals and communities to realize and achieve health and well-being, as one prefers. The disability community represents a diverse group of individuals with a wide spectrum of functional, physical, sensory, and/or neurodivergent abilities. Existing barriers to reproductive health care are a consequence of environmental and attitudinal barriers, not from the disabilities themselves. People with disabilities are also not frequently centered or included in discussions surrounding reproductive rights. T

Prognostic ability of the sTarT back screening tool for disability and pain intensity outcomes in older adults with low back pain seeking chiropractic care: a multi-national external validation study.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) is common among older adults, and it is a frequent reason for seeking chiropractic care. The STarT Back Screening Tool (SBT) was developed to stratify patients with LBP into low, medium, and high-risk treatment pathways, so that the treatment can be matched to each participant's risk profile. But its prognostic performance varies across settings and populations. No studies have focused on the SBT's utility as a stratified-care tool in older adults with LBP in a chiropractic setting. Therefore, our aim was to evaluate the ability of the SBT to predict three-, six

Discriminative control of punished stereotyped behavior in humans.

The purpose of this experiment was to establish discriminative control of responding by an antecedent stimulus using differential punishment because the results of past studies on this topic have been mixed. Three adults with mental retardation who exhibited stereotypy not maintained by social consequences (i.e., automatic reinforcement) participated. For each subject, stereotypy occurred frequently in the presence of a stimulus correlated with nonpunishment of stereotypy and rarely, if ever, in the presence of a stimulus correlated with punishment of stereotypy. Latency measures showed that t

Global pattern of experienced and anticipated discrimination against people with schizophrenia: a cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Many people with schizophrenia experience stigma caused by other people's knowledge, attitudes, and behaviour; this can lead to impoverishment, social marginalisation, and low quality of life. We aimed to describe the nature, direction, and severity of anticipated and experienced discrimination reported by people with schizophrenia. METHODS: We did a cross-sectional survey in 27 countries, in centres affiliated to the INDIGO Research Network, by use of face-to-face interviews with 732 participants with schizophrenia. Discrimination was measured with the newly validated discriminat

Construction and validation of a model for predicting disability in older adults with chronic lung disease.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic lung disease and disability pose a serious threat to the physical and mental health of the older adults, and there are relatively few studies on the prediction of disability in this group. AIMS: This study was to explore the risk factors for disability in older adults with chronic lung disease and develop a validated risk prediction model. METHOD: This study involved 845 older adults with chronic lung diseases from the 2015 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) survey. They were split into a training group (n = 592) and a validation set (n = 253) at a

Predictive value of early postoperative copeptin after cardiac surgery: A two-centre prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Patients undergoing cardiac surgery are at increased risk for postoperative complications, making early postoperative risk evaluation crucial. Recent studies have shown that copeptin, a neurohumoral marker, is associated with major adverse events after noncardiac surgery. However, data on its role after cardiac surgery are scarce. OBJECTIVE: Primary aim of this study was to analyse the association of early postoperative copeptin levels with adverse events after cardiac surgery. DESIGN: Observational, prospective cohort study. SETTING: Two German tertiary healthcare centres. Enro

Understanding participation of persons with disabilities in clinical trial research in India-a retrospective analysis of inclusive language of protocols.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The under-representation of vulnerable groups in clinical trials, including persons with disabilities, could affect the applicability of trial findings to real-world public health interventions. We undertook this study to assess the extent to which persons with disabilities are excluded due to non-inclusionary language use in protocols from clinical trial research in India. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective mixed-methods analysis of fully published clinical trial protocols relevant to India (January 2017 to December 2024), sourced from national and international

Using stimulus shaping and fading to establish stimulus control in normal and retarded children.

The present study was an effort to investigate whether, in addition to his IQ level, the child's ability to identify all relevant stimulus components would affect the frequency of overselective responding. Children of different IQ levels (i.e. normal, educably retarded, and trainable retarded children) participated. Subjects were trained to learn the meanings of four sets of fictitious words, i.e. two sets containing words printed in Roman letters (Roman words), and two sets containing words printed in Hebrew letters (Hebrew words). All subjects could identify the words of each set. The normal

External validation and updating of prognostic prediction models for nonrecovery among older adults seeking primary care for back pain.

Prognostic prediction models for 3 different definitions of nonrecovery were developed in the Back Complaints in the Elders study in the Netherlands. The models' performance was good (optimism-adjusted area under receiver operating characteristics [AUC] curve ≥0.77, R2 ≥0.3). This study aimed to assess the external validity of the 3 prognostic prediction models in the Norwegian Back Complaints in the Elders study. We conducted a prospective cohort study, including 452 patients aged ≥55 years, seeking primary care for a new episode of back pain. Nonrecovery was defined for 2 outcomes, combining
