Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Future of Nursing Education.

Nursing is the largest health profession, with nearly 4 million providers practicing across acute, primary, and public health care settings. In response to the pandemic, nursing schools halted on-site course delivery and redesigned programs to attenuate risks to students and faculty. Key challenges faced by schools included financial cutbacks, rapid increases in online learning technology, maintaining student academic progression, disruption to clinical learning opportunities, and meeting accreditation standards, while addressing the stress and loss experienced by faculty, staff, and students.

Beyond Capacity: Resilience of Intensive Care Staff During the COVID-19-Related Near-Disaster in Sweden.

BACKGROUND: Intensive care units (ICUs) often operate near full capacity, limiting flexibility during crises. As geopolitical instability increases in Europe, healthcare systems must be prepared to expand and adapt under extreme pressure. AIM: To explore how ICU staff in Sweden-a country with traditionally low disaster preparedness-managed a near-disaster situation and identify lessons for future crises. STUDY DESIGN: A qualitative descriptive study using semi-structured interviews and inductive content analysis. Eleven ICU staff members (anaesthesiologists, ICU nurses and nurse assistants)

Public health nursing practice: aftermath of September 11, 2001.

America's experience on September 11, 2001, forms the backdrop of this review of the public health nursing role in bioterrorism preparedness. The risks and challenges to the public health infrastructure are reviewed in order to place bioterrorism preparedness in a public health context. A review of the literature provides background material on the extent to which public health has evolved in planning for a bioterrorism event. The skills and competencies that will prepare public health nurses in their planning for and response to threats of bioterrorism are addressed. Anthrax is used as an exa

Reconsidering the Resources Needed for Multiple Casualty Events: Lessons Learned From the Crash of Asiana Airlines Flight 214.

IMPORTANCE: To date, a substantial portion of multiple casualty incident literature has focused exclusively on prehospital and emergency department resources needed for optimal disaster response. Thus, inpatient resources required to care for individuals injured in multiple casualty events are not well described. OBJECTIVE: To highlight the resources beyond initial emergency department triage needed for multiple casualty events, using one of the largest commercial aviation disasters in modern US history as a case study. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Prospective case series of injured in

Advancing nursing care for older migrants in the context of climate change: A narrative review.

UNLABELLED: Climate change, global migration, and population aging are converging to create unique health risks for older migrants, a group facing compounded vulnerabilities due to age, migration status, and often socioeconomic disadvantage. However, the integration of climate resilience, cultural safety, and nursing care for this population remains underexplored. OBJECTIVE: This narrative review synthesizes existing evidence on the intersection of climate change, the health of older migrants, and nursing care, aiming to identify gaps and propose a pathway for integrated care. METHODS: A str

[Changes in long-term care certification rate and related factors in municipalities affected by the heavy rain disaster in July 2018].

Objectives The purpose of this study was to determine the change in the certification rate for long-term care (LTC) in the municipalities affected by the heavy rain disaster in July 2018, and to clarify the relationships between the change in the LTC certification rate and the damage situation and regional characteristics. Methods The subjects were 108 municipalities to which the Disaster Relief Act was applied. Interrupted time series analyses were conducted of the monthly LTC certification rate for a total of 37 months from July 2016 to July 2019, and the changes in the LTC, mild LTC (requiri

The Impact of Hurricane Harvey on Home Health Care Delivery for Medicare Beneficiaries.

Hurricanes can profoundly affect the delivery of home health (HH) services. We examined the impact of Hurricane Harvey on HH care in Texas, linking 2017-2018 patient-level Medicare HH claims with county-level data on disaster declarations from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. We used segmented interrupted time series to estimate monthly HH use changes among 142,416 beneficiaries in affected versus non-affected counties immediately after landfall (level change) and in its continued aftermath (trend change). HH nursing use dropped 16% immediately following hurricane and continued to decr

The 1917 Halifax Explosion: the first coordinated local civilian medical response to disaster in Canada.

The 1917 Halifax Explosion was an unfortunate but predictable tragedy, given the sea traffic and munitions cargo, resulting in sudden large-scale damage and catastrophic injuries, with 1950 dead and 8000 injured. Although generous support was received from the United States, the bulk of the medical work was undertaken using local resources through an immediate, massive, centrally coordinated medical response. The incredible care provided 100 years ago by these Canadian physicians, nurses and students is often forgotten, but deserves attention. The local medical response to the 1917 disaster is

The nature of psychiatric problems among disaster victims.

One-quarter of the residents (about 52,000) in the disaster area around the volcanic eruption area of Mt Unzen-Fugen have been forced to evacuate over a 3 year period. We conducted a psychological controlled study using the GHQ-30 for evacuees. As a result, the percentage of people with a high score over 8 points was 67% of evacuees, markedly higher than 10% of the control group. Some mental support activities, such as counseling by community nurses and crisis intervention/medication by psychiatrists and others, have been promoted. Subjects who received a psychiatric intervention had good outc
