Disclosure of sexual orientation and subsequent substance use and abuse among lesbian, gay, and bisexual youths: critical role of disclosure reactions.

Research on whether disclosure of sexual orientation promotes lower substance use among lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals has been inconsistent. One reason for this may be that disclosure results in accepting and rejecting reactions. The current report longitudinally examines whether the types of reactions to disclosure are associated with substance use and abuse among 156 LGB youths (ages 14-21). Neither the number of disclosures nor the numbers of accepting or neutral disclosure reactions were associated with substance use or abuse. However, the number of rejecting reactions to di

Disclosure policies and the epistemic corruption of biomedical research.

Disclosure policies in biomedical journals require authors to disclose potential conflicts of interest (COI), typically -but not exclusively- originating in the industry funding they receive for their research. The consensus among philosophers and sociologists studying COI is that disclosure policies are not working. This failure has been interpretated by pharma scholars as a telling sign of the corruption of biomedical research. But how could have disclosure policies worked? Using Bicchieri's theory of social norms, we are going to argue that for disclosing to work in correcting the adverse e

Public preferences for biopsy risk disclosure in the Netherlands.

PURPOSE: To assess general population perspectives on pre-biopsy disclosure of serious risks and factors associated with a preference for disclosure. METHODS: 2,407 adults from the Dutch general population completed 3,565 case vignettes describing hypothetical patients requiring biopsies, each reporting the risk of serious complications (requiring additional treatment or prolonged hospitalization, or resulting in death). Vignettes varied by patient age (9, 26, 46, or 71 years), probability of serious complications (<0.1%, <1%, <5%, or unspecified), and biopsy purpose (primary diagnosis, stagi

Family imaginaries in the disclosure of a blood-borne virus.

Contemporary sociological work has emphasised that family is not static, but actively shaped by ideas of who and what makes family. Disclosure of an illness, including diagnosis of stigmatised infections such as HIV, hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virus, can change the dynamics of family relationships. This paper draws on 61 qualitative semi-structured interviews conducted between 2017 and 2019 with people in Australia with one or more of these blood-borne viruses (BBVs) and their family members, to understand the experiences of serodiscordant (mixed viral status) families. Through a themat

A survey of disclosure of diagnosis to patients with glioma in Japan.

BACKGROUND: There have been few studies investigating neuro-oncologists' attitudes toward the disclosure of the diagnosis. This study aimed to determine the current status of disclosure to glioma patients in Japan and to analyze the factors associated with disclosure. METHODS: A set of questionnaires about disclosure to patients with malignant glioma was distributed by e-mail to 191 physicians participating in the 27th Annual Meeting of the Japan Society for Neuro-Oncology. RESULTS: The response rate was 73.8% (141/191). Of these, 44.3% disclosed the correct diagnosis to glioblastoma patient

Parents' perceptions of disclosure of the diagnosis of cerebral palsy.

The aim of the paper is to propose guidelines for good practice in disclosing the diagnosis of cerebral palsy to parents. The guidelines draw on an interview study with parents of 107 children, average age 24 months, in the South East Thames region. In addition case notes were examined, and mothers completed questionnaires to measure current levels of depression and coping strategies. Dissatisfaction with how the diagnosis had been disclosed was greater where children had been premature and/or low birth weight, where they developed more severe degrees of physical disability, and where the diag

A Chronology for the Identification and Disclosure of Adverse Effects of Succinylcholine.

BACKGROUND: New therapies are created to address specific problems and enjoy popularity as they enter widespread clinical use. Broader use can reveal unknown adverse effects and impact the life cycle significantly. Succinylcholine, a depolarizing neuromuscular blocker, was the product of decades of research surrounding the ancient compound, curare. It was introduced into practice in the 1950s by Burroughs Wellcome and Company (BW Co) and was welcomed due to its rapidly acting muscle relaxation effects. Global clinical use revealed adverse effects, both minor and major, in particular, hyperkale

Association of disclosure of HIV status with medication adherence.

OBJECTIVE: Disclosure may affect adherence to antiretroviral treatment. In a medication adherence program, this cross-sectional study describes disclosure, perceived reaction after disclosure, living situations, and the relationship of disclosure with antiretroviral adherence. METHODS: A combination of a questionnaire to measure disclosure and longitudinal electronic monitoring of medication adherence was used. RESULTS: A total of 103 out of 159 eligible patients gave informed consent. The characteristics differed between participants and nonparticipants (race, education, sexual orientation,

Experiences of genetic risk: disclosure and the gendering of responsibility.

The question of 'who owns genetic information' is increasingly a focus of ethical inquiry. Applied to predictive testing, several recent critiques suggest that persons with a genetic disorder have a moral duty to disclose that information to other family members. The justification for this obligation is that genetic information belongs to and may benefit not only a single individual, but also members of a biological kinship. This paper considers this issue from a different vantage point: How does gender intersect with the moral duty to disclose genetic information? Scholars have argued that ge

Patterns and Predictors of HIV-Status Disclosure Among Pregnant Women in South Africa: Dimensions of Disclosure and Influence of Social and Economic Circumstances.

HIV-status disclosure may improve psychosocial health and adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART), but existing insights suffer from methodological limitations. We explored disclosure over time during pregnancy and postpartum among 1347 HIV-positive women in Cape Town. Among 995 women diagnosed HIV-positive before the pregnancy and entering antenatal care (median age 30 years), 95% had disclosed to ≥ 1 individual. In Mokken scale analysis, we observed two separate dimensions of disclosure: disclosure to a male partner, and disclosure to family/community members. Among 352 women diagnosed dur

"They were the ones that saw me and listened." From child sexual abuse to disclosure: Adults' recalls of the process towards final disclosure.

BACKGROUND: When child sexual abuse (CSA) is not disclosed, children run the risk of being subjected to longer or repeated abuse, not receiving necessary treatment, and being re-victimized. OBJECTIVE: This study examines what adults exposed to child sexual abuse in hindsight evaluate as important for disclosure. The aim was to explore exposed own experiences of steps towards final disclosure. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Data were obtained from adult users of Norwegian Sexual Abuse Support Centers. Included were users exposed to CSA before the age of 18 (N=23). METHODS: Data were collected thr

Understanding expert testimony on child sexual abuse denial after New Jersey v. J.L.G.: Ground truth, disclosure suspicion bias, and disclosure substantiation bias.

The New Jersey Supreme Court held in New Jersey v. J.L.G. (2018) that experts can no longer explain to juries why sexually abused children might deny abuse. The court was influenced by expert testimony that "methodologically superior" studies find lower rates of denial. Examining the studies in detail, we argue that the expert testimony was flawed due to three problems with using child disclosure studies to estimate the likelihood that abused children are reluctant to disclose abuse: the ground truth problem, disclosure suspicion bias, and disclosure substantiation bias. Research identifying g

Artificial Intelligence Governance in Anatomy: From Disclosure Toward Stewardship.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly influencing anatomical education, research, scholarly publishing, and the development of digital anatomical resources. Current discussions of AI governance in anatomy have largely focused on author use and disclosure. However, AI now operates across multiple stages of scholarly communication and increasingly intersects with anatomical images, body donation, and donor-derived resources. These developments raise discipline-specific questions about visual authenticity, provenance, confidentiality, secondary use, and the continuing responsibilities asso

Intelligence Disclosure on Deploying SpyTag/SpyCatcher for Nanoparticle Assembly.

Immunization with antigens presented multivalently on virus-like particles elicits potent immune responses. The SpyTag/SpyCatcher system, which allows spontaneous covalent bond formation between two proteins, provides a simple route to functionalize virus-like particles for multivalent presentation. Termed SpyVLPs, these reactive nanoparticles allow modular plug-and-display of different antigens. SpyCatcher003-mi3 is a resilient SpyVLP that can be produced at high yield, allows efficient coupling, and can be applied to vaccines against a diverse range of pathogens, as well as against cancer an

Ethical considerations of disclosure of iatrogenic cerebral amyloid angiopathy.

Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) causes stroke and cognitive decline. The recently identified iatrogenic CAA subtype (iCAA) is thought to be transmitted through medical procedures involving cadaveric human material and potentially neurosurgical instruments or blood transfusions. This raises ethical questions concerning disclosure of iCAA. We consider ethical arguments concerning three disclosure-related questions. Should clinicians disclose their suspicion of iCAA to patients presenting with CAA and a history of relevant exposure? Should clinicians recommend the additional tests needed for iC
