Racial discrimination and other adverse childhood experiences as risk factors for internalizing mental health concerns among Black youth.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been consistently linked to a reduction in healthy psychological adjustment among youth. Emergent evidence suggests that there are culturally specific ACEs, such as racial discrimination, that are particularly harmful to the mental health of Black youth. However, the psychological impact of racial discrimination on the mental health of Black youth relative to other ACEs remains underexplored. The present study aimed to address this gap by examining the extent to which racial discrimination was associated with other ACEs and elucidating the unique assoc

Early life racial/ethnic discrimination effects on behavioral control and health outcomes in young adults.

Early life trauma has been shown to facilitate habitual behavior, which may predispose individuals toward perpetuating maladaptive behaviors. However, previous investigations did not account for other traumatic childhood experiences like racial/ethnic discrimination exposure, nor have they examined the interaction of trauma and habits on real-world adverse outcomes. To examine these effects, we recruited 96 young adults (20.06 ± 1.89 years old) in a study probing early life racial/ethnic discrimination influences on habitual learning, and the conjunctive influences of early life discrimination

The opioid mechanism of interferon-alpha action.

Rats were trained to discriminate the opioid receptor agonist ethylketocyclazocine (EKC) (0.3 mg/kg body weight, intraperitoneally) from saline. Interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha), when substituted for EKC, elicited a dose-related increase in EKC-like responses. This generalization of EKC responses was blocked by the opioid antagonist naloxone (1 mg/kg). Potentiation of responses to a low dose (0.1 mg/kg) of EKC by IFN-alpha (1 x 10(6) U/kg or 0.22 nmol/kg) was also observed. Data thus indicate the involvement of opioid neurons on the action of IFN-alpha. d-Amphetamine (0.8 mg/kg) was shown to poten

Transitions Into and Out of Perceived Foreign-Origin Discrimination Among Marriage-Migrant Women in South Korea: Asymmetric Effects on Acculturative Stress and Heterogeneity by Country of Origin.

In recent decades, South Korea has transitioned from an ethnically homogeneous nation to a more multicultural society, with foreign-born women marrying Korean men accounting for most new international marriages. Despite government efforts to support integration, marriage-migrant women continue to experience foreign-origin discrimination. This study examines the association between perceived foreign-origin discrimination and acculturative stress, with a focus on distinguishing between the effects of transition into and out of discrimination. This study also examines whether these effects vary b

Neutral reference stimuli improve interpretation of choice behavior in touchscreen pairwise discrimination in male mice.

The touchscreen pairwise discrimination (PD) paradigm is a standardized behavioural assay for assessing cognition in rodents. PD performance is typically quantified by accuracy, but under disease models or pharmacological manipulations, accuracy alone may mask heterogeneity in behavioral strategies, limiting interpretation of the behavioral processes contributing to task performance. Here we introduced dynamic neutral images as reference stimuli to operationally compare two components of observed choice behavior: reward-guided selection of S+ and suppression of responding to S-. When the rewar

Chlordiazepoxide reduces discriminability but not rate of forgetting in delayed conditional discrimination.

Benzodiazepine and anticholinergic drugs interfere with septo-hippocampal function in similar but not identical ways. They also share a number of common behavioural effects and, in particular, both classes of drug interfere with spatial memory in the Morris Water Maze--a test which is very sensitive to hippocampal dysfunction. We have previously shown that the anticholinergic drug scopolamine impairs discriminability, but not rate of forgetting, in delayed conditional discrimination. In the present study forgetting was quantified by fitting a negative exponential function to estimates of discr

On the Relationship Between Online Heterosexist Discrimination and Mental Health and Substance Use Among LGBTQ+ Young Adults.

LGBTQ+ individuals experience disproportionately higher rates of mental health and substance use difficulties. Discrimination is a significant factor in explaining these disparities. Meyer's (2003) minority stress theory (MST) indicates that proximal group-specific processes mediate the relationship between discrimination and health outcomes, with the effects moderated by other social factors. However, online discrimination has been understudied among LGBTQ+  people. Focusing on LGBTQ+  young adults experiencing online heterosexist discrimination (OHD), the current study aimed to investigate t

Perceived Healthcare Discrimination and Its Impact on Mistrust and Delayed Care Among Sexual and Gender Minority Young Adults in Spain.

Sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals face discrimination in health care, compromising both well-being and access to services. Such experiences may foster expectations of mistreatment and mistrust of health care professionals, contributing to delays in care with potentially adverse consequences. This study examined perceived discrimination, mental and physical health, trust in providers, and care-seeking behavior among young adults in Spain, comparing SGM participants with their cisgender heterosexual peers. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted with 217 participants (M = 21.5 a

Cumulative hardship: the role of perceived injustice in linking war-related trauma and discrimination with mental health.

Exposure to war-related trauma and post-migration discrimination are significant risk factors for mental health problems among refugees and migrants. Understanding the mechanisms linking these experiences to psychological outcomes is essential for informing targeted interventions in host countries. In the context of resettlement, this study examined whether perceptions of injustice and physiological stress regulation, measured through resting heart rate variability (HRV), mediated the relationship between trauma, perceived discrimination, and mental health problems. Data were collected from 98

The Impact of Discrimination on the Mental Health of Trans*Female Youth and the Protective Effect of Parental Support.

Significant health disparities exist for transgender female (trans*female) youth. We assessed differences in mental health outcomes based on exposure to discrimination among transgender female youth in the San Francisco Bay Area aged 16-24 years. Youth were recruited using a combination of respondent driven sampling with online and social media methods. Logistic regression models were used to estimate odds ratios for the mental health outcomes, comparing levels of discrimination and levels of resiliency promoting protective factors among sexually active youth in the sample (N = 216). Association between discrimination and subsequent psychotic experiences in patients with COVID-19: A cohort study.

Although cross-sectional studies have suggested that discrimination has a negative impact on the mental health of patients with COVID-19, no cohort studies with longitudinal data have established a causal relationship. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the association between COVID-19-related discrimination and subsequent psychotic experiences in individuals who had contracted the disease. Secondary outcomes were PTSD symptoms, psychological distress, and suicidal ideation. We utilized inverse probability weighting and marginal structural models with robust standard errors to analyze

A derived transfer of simple discrimination and self-reported arousal functions in spider fearful and non-spider-fearful participants.

Two experiments investigated the derived transfer of functions through equivalence relations established using a stimulus pairing observation procedure. In Experiment 1, participants were trained on a simple discrimination (A1+/A2-) and then a stimulus pairing observation procedure was used to establish 4 stimulus pairings (A1-B1, A2-B2, B1-C1, B2-C2). Subsequently, a transfer of the simple discrimination functions through equivalence relations was observed (e.g., C1+/C2-). These procedures were modified in Experiment 2, which demonstrated that spider-fearful and non-spider-fearful participant

The physiological cost of coping: a systematic review and meta-analysis on discrimination and heart rate variability.

BACKGROUND: Heart rate variability (HRV) reflects parasympathetic regulation and is typically associated with better health outcomes. However, minoritized populations, particularly African Americans, show a paradoxical pattern of higher resting HRV despite greater cardiovascular risk, a phenomenon known as the Cardiovascular Conundrum. Discrimination has been proposed as a key mechanism, but evidence remains fragmented. METHODS: The present meta-analysis quantified HRV in relation to discrimination across 3 domains: (1) resting HRV differences between minoritized and majority groups, (2) HRV

Sex-specific discrimination of familiar and unfamiliar mates in the Tokay gecko.

Social animals need to keep track of other individuals in their group to be able to adjust their behaviour accordingly and facilitate group cohesion. This recognition ability varies across species and is influenced by cognitive capacities such as learning and memory. In reptiles, particularly Squamates (lizards, snakes, and worm lizards), chemical communication is pivotal for territoriality, reproduction, and other social interactions. However, the cognitive processes underlying these social interactions remain understudied. In our study, we examined the ability of male and female Tokay geckos
