Seahorse wins all races: hippocampus participates in both linear and non-linear visual discrimination learning.

Consistent with configural/conjunctive theories of the hippocampus, we report that rats trained on the non-linear transverse patterning discrimination problem (A+ versus B-, B+ versus C-, and C+ versus A) displayed retrograde amnesia when the hippocampus was later damaged. They also failed to relearn the solution to this problem. Damage to the hippocampus following training also produced retrograde amnesia in rats trained on a set of elemental discrimination problems (A+ versus B-, C+ versus D-, and E+ versus F-) that could be solved based on the associative strengths of the individual choice

Multimodal machine-learning discrimination of recent preadmission suicidal behavior in adolescents hospitalized with depressive episodes.

BACKGROUND: Objective sleep and autonomic measures may add information beyond clinical characteristics when distinguishing adolescents with recent suicidal behavior. We evaluated multimodal machine-learning models for concurrent discrimination of recent preadmission suicidal behavior in adolescents with depressive episodes. METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional study included 262 inpatients aged 11-17 years: 59 with actual and 27 with interrupted attempts within 3 months before admission. Stage 1 characterized 45 candidates using seven selectors; Stage 2 compared fixed predictor sets ac

Mixture discrimination training induces durable and generalizable olfactory learning independent of odorant structure and concentration.

Previously, we showed that adult human olfaction retains plasticity in the unilateral processing of molecular chirality (Feng and Zhou, 2019). Using a similar unilateral discrimination protocol across three experiments with human adults (n = 96; 1295 sessions), we now reveal distinct patterns of specificity, generalization, and persistence in olfactory learning, independent of adaptation or task difficulty. Training with binary odor mixtures at varying ratios consistently produced durable gains that transferred across nostrils and generalized to novel mixtures differing in both structure and p

Deep Learning Discrimination of Colorectal Cancer using Retinal Fundus Photographs: UK Biobank Case-Control Study.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVE: Retinal fundus photography captures microvascular and neuroretinal features reflecting systemic health. While Deep Learning (DL) has enabled extraction of cardiometabolic and aging biomarkers from retinal images, its application to oncologic disease status discrimination remains largely unexplored. This study evaluated whether DL analysis of retinal fundus photographs can discriminate individuals with colorectal cancer (CRC) from those without CRC (non-CRC) in a curated UK Biobank case-control setting. METHODS: This retrospective imaging study used 1,600 UK Biobank fun

Distinct Response Selectivity Changes in the Primary Visual and Parietal Cortex during Visual Discrimination Learning.

When animals learn the behavioral relevance of sensory features, response selectivity in primary sensory areas increases for those features. However, the effect of learning on neuronal activity in higher-level areas associated with decision-making in the parietal cortex, compared with primary sensory cortex, is not yet known. We used two-photon calcium imaging to determine how learning modifies neural representations in the primary visual cortex (V1) and posterior parietal cortex (PPC) in a visual go/no-go orientation discrimination task in male and female mice. We found that behavior improvem

Application of machine learning based on radiomics in the discrimination of intracranial germ cell tumours.

BACKGROUND: Among germ cell tumours, germinomas are extremely sensitive to radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Histological diagnosis is important for clinical treatment decisions. This study aimed to identify germinomas and non-germinomatous germ cell tumours (NGGCTs) using radiomics-based machine learning (ML). METHODS: The present retrospective study comprised 141 patients diagnosed with intracranial germ cell tumours (ICGCTs), 71 germinomas, and 70 NGGCTs. Radiomics features were quantitatively extracted from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences, including T1-weighted imaging (T1WI), T2-

Metal Oxide-Metal Organic Framework Layers for Discrimination of Multiple Gases Employing Machine Learning Algorithms.

The increasing demand for gas molecule detection emphasizes the need for portable sensor devices possessing selectivity, a low limit of detection (LOD), and a large dynamic range. Despite substantial progress in developing nanostructured sensor materials with heightened sensitivity, achieving sufficient selectivity remains a challenge. Here, we introduce a strategy to enhance the performance of chemiresistive gas sensors by combining an advanced sensor design with machine learning (ML). Our sensor architecture consists of a tungsten oxide (WO3) nanoparticle network, as the primary sensing laye

Discrimination of opium from Afghanistan and Myanmar by infrared spectroscopy coupled with machine learning methods.

Afghanistan and Myanmar are two overwhelming opium production places. In this study, rapid and efficient methods for distinguishing opium from Afghanistan and Myanmar were developed using infrared spectroscopy (IR) coupled with multiple machine learning (ML) methods for the first time. A total of 146 authentic opium samples were analyzed by mid-IR (MIR) and near-IR (NIR), within them 116 were used for model training and 30 were used for model validation. Six ML methods, including partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA), orthogonal PLS-DA (OPLS-DA), k-nearest neighbour (KNN), suppo

Deep learning referral suggestion and tumour discrimination using explainable artificial intelligence applied to multiparametric MRI.

OBJECTIVES: An appropriate and fast clinical referral suggestion is important for intra-axial mass-like lesions (IMLLs) in the emergency setting. We aimed to apply an interpretable deep learning (DL) system to multiparametric MRI to obtain clinical referral suggestion for IMLLs, and to validate it in the setting of nontraumatic emergency neuroradiology. METHODS: A DL system was developed in 747 patients with IMLLs ranging 30 diseases who underwent pre- and post-contrast T1-weighted (T1CE), FLAIR, and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI). A DL system that segments IMLLs, classifies tumourous condi

Relationship between cholinergic dysfunction and discrimination learning disabilities in Wistar rats following chronic cerebral hypoperfusion.

The effects of chronic hypoperfusion of cerebral blood flow (CBF) on central cholinergic indices and intellectual functions were investigated in rats. Male Wistar rats, aged 9 weeks, were anesthetized with pentobarbital, and the bilateral common carotid arteries were permanently ligated. Cortical CBF in the hypoperfused rats was markedly decreased at 6 weeks after the operation. In the hypoperfused group, cholinergic indices were changed to consist two phases after the operation, before (acute) and after (chronic) 6 weeks after the operation. At 6 weeks, choline acetyltransferase activity was

Drug discrimination learning in rats with excitotoxic lesions of nucleus basalis and ventral globus pallidus.

Rats can readily acquire conditional discriminations in which mixtures of drugs serve as compound internal discriminative stimuli. Excitotoxic lesions in the region of the nucleus basalis have been shown to impair the acquisition of conditional discriminations based upon external visual stimuli, but nothing was known about their effects on discrimination of internal stimuli. A baseline of undiscriminated bar-pressing for food reinforcers was established prior to surgery. Lesions were made by infusing either ibotenic or quisqualic acid bilaterally into the basal forebrain (the ibotenate-induced

Discriminately Treating Motion Components Evolves Joint Depth and Ego-Motion Learning.

Unsupervised learning of depth and ego-motion, two fundamental tasks in 3D perception, has made significant strides in recent years. Nevertheless, existing methods often treat ego-motion estimation as an auxiliary task, typically indiscriminately mixing all motion types when generating supervisory signals. Such designs hinder the incorporation of sufficiently strong geometric constraints into the joint learning framework, thereby limiting its robustness under diverse adverse conditions. This study introduces a discriminative treatment of motion components by leveraging the distinct geometric r

Semi-Negative Contrastive Subclass Discriminative Network for Compositional Zero-Shot Learning.

The goal of compositional zero-shot learning (CZSL) is to train a model to recognize images containing known attribute-object pairs. This reduces the reliance on extensive training data and enables the model to identify unseen combinations. Current CZSL methods face several challenges, including multiple attributes for a single object, disconnected training and test sets, long-tailed distribution of visual categories, and substantial differences in state representation between different objects. These factors collectively impede the precise identification of new combinations. In response to th

Joint multi-omics discriminant analysis with consistent representation learning using PANDA.

Integrative multi-omics analysis provides deeper insight and enables better and more realistic modeling of the underlying biology and causes of diseases than does single omics analysis. Although several integrative multi-omics analysis methods have been proposed and demonstrated promising results in integrating distinct omics datasets, inconsistent distribution of the different omics data, which is caused by technology variations, poses a challenge for paired integrative multi-omics methods. In addition, the existing discriminant analysis-based integrative methods do not effectively exploit co

Noncoding RNAs and Deep Learning Neural Network Discriminate Multi-Cancer Types.

Detecting cancers at early stages can dramatically reduce mortality rates. Therefore, practical cancer screening at the population level is needed. To develop a comprehensive detection system to classify multiple cancer types, we integrated an artificial intelligence deep learning neural network and noncoding RNA biomarkers selected from massive data. Our system can accurately detect cancer vs. healthy objects with 96.3% of AUC of ROC (Area Under Curve of a Receiver Operating Characteristic curve), and it surprisingly reaches 78.77% of AUC when validated by real-world raw data from a completel

Multi-Instance Deep Learning: Discover Discriminative Local Anatomies for Bodypart Recognition.

In general image recognition problems, discriminative information often lies in local image patches. For example, most human identity information exists in the image patches containing human faces. The same situation stays in medical images as well. "Bodypart identity" of a transversal slice-which bodypart the slice comes from-is often indicated by local image information, e.g., a cardiac slice and an aorta arch slice are only differentiated by the mediastinum region. In this work, we design a multi-stage deep learning framework for image classification and apply it on bodypart recognition. Sp

Discriminating the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure from other behavioral and learning disorders.

Fetal alcohol syndrome and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders are underdiagnosed in general treatment settings. Among the factors involved in identifying the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure are (1) the evidence for prenatal alcohol exposure; (2) the effects of the postnatal, caregiving environment; (3) comorbidities; and (4) differential diagnosis, which includes identifying the neurodevelopmental effects of alcohol and discriminating these effects from those characterizing other conditions. This article reviews findings on the neurodevelopmental effects of prenatal alcohol exposure, includ
