The accuracy of assessment of walking distance in the elective spinal outpatients setting.

Self reported walking distance is a clinically relevant measure of function. The aim of this study was to define patient accuracy and understand factors that might influence perceived walking distance in an elective spinal outpatients setting. A prospective cohort study. 103 patients were asked to perform one test of distance estimation and 2 tests of functional distance perception using pre-measured landmarks. Standard spine specific outcomes included the patient reported claudication distance, Oswestry disability index (ODI), Low Back Outcome Score (LBOS), visual analogue score (VAS) for leg

Prehension movements directed to approaching objects: influence of stimulus velocity on the transport and the grasp components.

In this investigation we studied the influence of object velocity on the transport and on the grasp components of prehension movements directed to approaching objects. Three experiments were carried out. In the first experiment six subjects were required to reach and grasp a sphere that approached them with a constant velocity. The effects of four velocities were studied. The results showed that the end point of the arm movement changed with object velocity: nearer the body with higher than with lower object velocities. Transport velocity increased with movement amplitude and the deceleration

Monocular size and distance scaling is modulated by the presence of a fixation point.

Fixation points are widely used in psychophysical research to stabilise gaze, yet their influence on perceptual outcomes remains underexplored. This study investigated the effects of the presence versus absence of a fixation point on monocular size-distance scaling, examining whether it functions as a fixation stabiliser, a spatial anchor (i.e., as a direct depth or location cue), or a competing visual reference. Using a widely employed fixation marker, we compared size and distance judgments for real objects and afterimages (stimuli that differ in their reliance on depth cues). Fixation point

Visual categorization of natural movies by rats.

Visual categorization of complex, natural stimuli has been studied for some time in human and nonhuman primates. Recent interest in the rodent as a model for visual perception, including higher-level functional specialization, leads to the question of how rodents would perform on a categorization task using natural stimuli. To answer this question, rats were trained in a two-alternative forced choice task to discriminate movies containing rats from movies containing other objects and from scrambled movies (ordinate-level categorization). Subsequently, transfer to novel, previously unseen stimu

Potential targets aimed at by spitting cobras when deterring predators from attacking.

When threatened, spitting cobras eject venom towards the face of an aggressor. To uncover the relevant cues used by cobras for face recognition we determined how often artificial targets equipped with or without eyes elicited spitting behavior. In addition, we measured whether and how target shape and size influenced the spitting behavior of cobras. Results show that oval- and round-shaped targets were most effective, while triangles with the same surface area as oval 'face like' targets hardly elicited spitting. The likelihood of spitting depended on neither the presence, the spatial arrangem

The costs of cooperation: action-specific perception in the context of joint action.

A growing empirical literature has demonstrated that perceptions of the physical environment are influenced by the perceiver's behavioral ability. However, prior research has focused only on the perceptual consequences of individual behavior, despite the fact that individuals regularly take part in cooperative social interaction. To test whether similar effects occur as a result of engaging in joint action, we asked participants to estimate anticipated walking distance to a target location when expecting to carry a heavy object either alone or jointly with a confederate. Surprisingly, even tho

Effects of target distance and pupil size on letter contrast sensitivity with simultaneous vision bifocal contact lenses.

Using simulated presbyopia we measured the effects of target vergence and pupil size on letter contrast sensitivity while subjects wore accurately centered simultaneous vision bifocal contact lenses. These experiments examined the increase in depth of focus provided by two bifocal contact lenses, and the effects of pupil size on near and distance vision. Monocular contrast sensitivity was assessed with three different designs of soft contact lenses. First, as a single vision control, we measured contrast sensitivity with a Bausch & Lomb, Optima 38 lens corrected for distance. We then measured

Eye fixation and attention as modifiers of perceived distance.

An error in the perceived distance of a physically stationary object results in an apparent horizontal motion of the object if the head is moved horizontally. Procedures have been developed to use this apparent motion to measure the apparent distance of the object. Research also has indicated that the apparent distance of an object will tend to be displaced toward the distance at which the eyes are fixated. In the present study head-motion procedures were used to measure the effect of eye fixation and attention upon the apparent distance of a point of light in two experiments. Substantial erro

Dissecting pseudoneglect in real and virtual environments: effects of tool and stimulus, not distance or environment.

Pseudoneglect is a spatial bias favoring the left side of space observed in healthy individuals, typically shown by a leftward deviation when bisecting horizontal lines. Although environmental and individual factors are known to modulate this bias, findings remain inconsistent. This study aimed to provide new insights into the influence of four environmental factors on pseudoneglect: Distance (near, far), Environment (real, immersive Virtual Reality (iVR)), Tool (pen, laser pointer), Stimulus (line, object), while controlling handedness. Fifty-five participants (M = 20.6 years, SD = 2.3, 35 ri

Conditions under which arousal does and does not elevate height estimates.

We present a series of experiments that explore the boundary conditions for how emotional arousal influences height estimates. Four experiments are presented, which investigated the influence of context, situation-relevance, intensity, and attribution of arousal on height estimates. In Experiment 1, we manipulated the environmental context to signal either danger (viewing a height from above) or safety (viewing a height from below). High arousal only increased height estimates made from above. In Experiment 2, two arousal inductions were used that contained either 1) height-relevant arousing i

Spatial performance of unilateral vestibular defective patients in nonvisual versus visual navigation.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of unilateral vestibular neurotomy on humans ability to perform navigation tasks. These tasks provided self-motion feedback by way of either locomotor activity only (nonvisual navigation or "locomotor task") or visual motion cues only (visually simulated navigation or "visual task"). After exploration of an environment in which 4 locations were marked by different objects, subjects attempted to navigate to those locations either by reproducing the same paths as those followed during exploration, by reversing routes, or by making spatial

Haptic perception of rod length when exploration is self-determined, other-determined, and self-other co-determined.

Previous research has shown that when estimating accuracy of an object property like shape, haptic perception is better when exploration is active rather than passive. To further investigate this finding, participants estimated the length of a rod under differing exploration conditions: self-determined, other-determined, and self-other co-determined. During the self-determined exploration, participants moved their end of the rod while the experimenter held the other end of the rod stationary. During the other-determined exploration, the participant held the rod while the experimenter moved the

Path integration from optic flow and the role of eye movements.

Optic flow provides critical visual information for self-motion perception, including direction (heading), speed, and travel distance (path integration). While eye movements are naturally elicited during optic flow, most lab-based studies of human path integration require central fixation, potentially altering perception. Here, we examined whether free eye movements improve distance discrimination compared with fixation, testing the hypothesis that oculomotor signals may support oculomotor odometry. The participants viewed two consecutive optic flow stimuli simulating forward self-motion acros

Exploring the evolved concept of NEWCOMER: experimental tests of a cognitive model.

Enduring human coalitions face the adaptive problem of integrating new members. Although newcomers can provide benefits (e.g., additional labor), newcomers can also create costs (e.g., by free riding). Due to the unique adaptive problems they pose, we hypothesize that the mind contains an evolved concept of NEWCOMER. We test the design of this concept experimentally and show that the activation of the NEWCOMER concept elicits a variety of anti-free rider responses (e.g., a decrease in trust) with adaptively-targeted exceptions (e.g., a minimal increase in exclusion sentiment). These results su

Can metric feedback training hinder actions involving distance?

OBJECTIVE: The present studies tested whether distance estimation training with metric feedback can degrade the performance of untrained primarily perceptual-motor tasks. BACKGROUND: Training with metric feedback can improve distance estimations. However, previous research led to the conclusion that those improvements stemmed from changes in cognitive processing rather than in perception. If trainees applied their new cognitive strategies to primarily perceptual-motor tasks, then the performance of those tasks should degrade. The present studies tested that possibility. METHOD: Experiment 1

Relationships between obesity, functional exercise capacity, physical activity participation and physical self-perception in people with schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: This study compared differences in functional exercise capacity between patients with schizophrenia and healthy controls. Physical self-perception and physical activity variables contributing to the variability in the distance achieved during a walk test were identified. METHOD: A total of 25 normal weight, 25 overweight and 10 obese patients and 40 healthy volunteers were included. Functional exercise capacity was explored with a 6-minute walk test. Level of physical activity was assessed using the Baecke questionnaire and physical self-perception using the physical self-perceptio

The Effects of Brief Social Exclusion on Pain Perception and Pain Memory in Adolescents.

PURPOSE: Peer relationship problems are associated with pain complaints; however, experimental data linking the two are lacking. The purpose of this study was to determine whether brief social exclusion influences pain processing in healthy adolescents. METHODS: A total of 40 adolescents were randomly assigned to a social exclusion or social inclusion/control condition; they then completed a cold pressor task and provided pain ratings. Two weeks later, participants provided ratings for their memory for pain during the cold pressor (nanalyzed = 33). RESULTS: Social exclusion had no immediate

The linearity of proximally induced accommodation and vergence.

This study sought to determine the linearity and amplitude of both proximally induced accommodation (PIA) and vergence (PIV) by comparing the open-loop accommodation and vergence responses, respectively, to individual stimuli located at viewing distances ranging from 0.20 m to 1,500 m. For the measurement of PIA, the vergence and accommodation loops were opened by subjects (N = 10) monocularly viewing the target through a 0.5-mm pinhole, while accommodation was assessed concurrently using an infrared optometer. In the assessment of PIV, the accommodation loop was opened either by subjects (N =

Suppression behavior analyzed as a function of monovision addition power.

Monovision, the use of a monocular addition for near viewing, is a clinical technique sometimes used to correct presbyopia. This technique attempts to maintain binocular function while requiring a degree of central suppression. We examined suppression behavior in spectacle monovision as a function of addition power. Suppression behavior was determined by measuring the length and frequency of periods of suppression for a range of monocular addition powers. Testing was conducted at viewing distances of 6 m and 40 cm. The most striking result is the existence of a near/distance differential: the

Magnitude estimation of oral cavity distances.

Adult subjects were asked to estimate relative distances between points marked on artificial palates fitted to their own palatal vaults. The artificial palates were less than 1 mm thick and extended posteriorly along the hard palate from the central incisors to approximately the second molars. Distances of 4, 8, 12, 16, and 20 mm were marked on four planes on the palates, one corresponding to the alveolar ridge, one anterior and two posterior to the ridge. The subjects felt raised points on the palates with their tongues and assigned number referenced to a standard distance on the alveolar pla
