Sharing a driver's context with a caller via continuous audio cues to increase awareness about driver state.

In an experiment using a driving simulator we investigated whether sharing information of a driver's context with a remote caller via continuous audio cues can make callers more aware of the driving situation. Increased awareness could potentially help in making the conversation less distracting. Prior research has shown that although sharing context using video can create such beneficial effects, it also has some practical disadvantages. It is an open question whether other modalities might also provide sufficient context for a caller. In particular, the effects of sharing audio, a cheaper, m

EEG-based learning system for online motion sickness level estimation in a dynamic vehicle environment.

Motion sickness is a common experience for many people. Several previous researches indicated that motion sickness has a negative effect on driving performance and sometimes leads to serious traffic accidents because of a decline in a person's ability to maintain self-control. This safety issue has motivated us to find a way to prevent vehicle accidents. Our target was to determine a set of valid motion sickness indicators that would predict the occurrence of a person's motion sickness as soon as possible. A successful method for the early detection of motion sickness will help us to construct

Rotation advancement of the midface by distraction osteogenesis.

A wide variety of disease processes produce alteration of midfacial skeletal growth, resulting in moderate-to-severe midface deficiency presenting as retrusion associated with Angle's class III malocclusion. Le Fort III osteotomies with advancement can provide an excellent tool for correction of this deformity. Recently, the corrective procedure of choice for advancement of midfacial segments has been distraction osteogenesis after osteotomy. Straight linear advancement is the most common choice for corrective movement of the midfacial segment, whether accomplished through acute surgical advan

Color-semantic congruency boosts distractor resistance in visual working memory: an alpha-band oscillation perspective.

Successful memory performance requires maintaining target representations while resisting distractor interference. Although prior event-related potential (ERP) studies linked cognitive resources to distractor resistance by controlling stimulus similarity, how other visual representational properties modulate this resistance remain unclear. Here, we employed ERPs to investigate visual working memory resistance mechanisms during maintenance by manipulating color-semantic congruency, with focus on alpha-band suppression. Distractor presentation elicited enhanced N2 amplitudes and alpha desynchron

Hard Braking Events Among Novice Teenage Drivers By Passenger Characteristics.

In a naturalistic study of teenage drivers (N = 42) hard braking events of ≤-0.45 g were assessed over the first 6 months of licensure. A total of 1,721 hard braking events were recorded. The video footage of a sample (816) of these events was examined to evaluate validity and reasons for hard braking. Of these, 788 (96.6%) were estimated valid, of which 79.1% were due to driver misjudgment, 10.8% to risky driving behavior, 5.3% to legitimate evasive maneuvers, and 4.8% to distraction. Hard braking events per 10 trips and per 100 miles were compared across passenger characteristics. Hard braki

Prepared for the expected but unready for the unexpected: Unmet distractor expectations slow braking responsiveness but improve lane-keeping precision in a virtual driving simulation.

Driving requires attentional control mechanisms to enhance the detection of driving-relevant objects and to mitigate interference from distractors. While distractor suppression can be proactively engaged when distracting events are expected, this mechanism also comes along with both costs and benefits, affecting responsiveness and accuracy even in their temporary absence. We explored the effect of distractor expectations on driving performance. Through an immersive driving simulator, participants (N = 24) performed an adapted version of the Distractor Context Manipulation (DCM) paradigm. They

Dual-task costs of listening while driving in older adults with and without audiometric hearing loss: Behavioural and neurophysiological outcomes.

Age-related hearing loss may increase listening difficulties in challenging listening conditions (e.g., speech-in-noise), limiting cognitive resources available to perform common, complex multitasking behaviours like listening while driving. Older adults with hearing loss may compensate by increasing prefrontal cortex (PFC) activation in response to multitasking demands. Few realistic, controlled studies have examined how competing attentional demands of listening while driving affect performance and brain activation, and how these patterns may differ between older adults with and without audi

Rumination and impaired cortisol recovery following a social stressor in adolescent depression.

Response styles theory promotes rumination as a central cognitive construct driving negative mood and depression, and past research suggests that at least part of the mechanism driving rumination's depressogenic effect is through inhibiting the individual's ability to shift attentional focus away from negative environmental stimuli. In the current study, we hypothesized that high trait rumination would be associated with impaired recovery of the body's biological response to psychological stress. In a community sample of depressed (n = 31) and non-depressed (n = 33) adolescents we assessed rum

Driving Fatigue Onset and Visual Attention: An Electroencephalography-Driven Analysis of Ocular Behavior in a Driving Simulation Task.

Attentional deficits have tragic consequences on road safety. These deficits are not solely caused by distraction, since they can also arise from other mental impairments such as, most frequently, mental fatigue. Fatigue is among the most prevalent impairing conditions while driving, degrading drivers' cognitive and physical abilities. This issue is particularly relevant for professional drivers, who spend most of their time behind the wheel. While scientific literature already documented the behavioral effects of driving fatigue, most studies have focused on drivers under sleep deprivation or

A qualitative study on apparent and latent contributing factors to driving errors in Iran.

Road traffic crashes (RTCs) disproportionately impact low and middle-income countries (LMICs). Current interventions in LMICs primarily target road user behavior, neglecting systemic issues and casting drivers as mere contributors. Given Iran's unique cultural, financial, and social intricacies, this study aims to explore the latent causes of RTCs, prioritizing drivers' experiences and encompassing insights from various traffic system components. Applying a qualitative approach, data were collected through 46 semi-structured interviews with 38 participants, including drivers and experts from t

Auditory Global Positioning System and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems: A Safer Alternative to Bioptic Telescopes for Drivers Who Are Visually Impaired?

This work challenges the standard of the past 40 years, which required the use of a bioptic telescope by individuals with vision loss wanting to be licensed to drive in most states in the United States.Driving continues to be the key to independence for many individuals, particularly older drivers who live in an area where public transportation is limited or nonexistent. For the past 40 years, the most frequently option to allow drivers who are visually impaired to maintain driving privileges was to require them to use a bioptic telescope. Bioptic telescopes were felt to be necessary for wayfi
