The protective effect of diethyldithiocarbamate on several functions of kidney mitochondria, isolated from rats poisoned with mercury, was analyzed. The drug, administered at a concentration of 10 mg/ kg body weight to rats treated with a sublethal dose of Hg2+, for example, 2 mg/kg body weight, prevented the mercury-induced damage on: a) transmembrane potential, b) ATP synthesis, and c) Ca2+ accumulation. It is demonstrated that such a protective effect of diethyldithiocarbamate is due to its ionophoretic properties on mercury.

Tyrosinase activity in crude extracts from various tissues of the adult bovine eye was examined biochemically. Enzyme activity was measured by using L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA) as substrate and determining colorimetrically by an increase in absorbancy at 400 or 475 nm. BACKGROUND: Disulfiram (DS), an antialcoholism medicine, demonstrated strong anticancer activity in the laboratory but did not show promising results in clinical trials. The anticancer activity of DS is copper dependent. The reaction of DS and copper generates reactive oxygen species (ROS). After oral administration in the clinic, DS is enriched and quickly metabolised in the liver. The associated change of chemical structure may make the metabolites of DS lose its copper-chelating ability and disable their anticancer activity. The anticancer chemical structure of DS is still largely unknown.

The formation of nitric oxide (NO) radicals was demonstrated by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy in the rat during varying degrees of brain ischemia. Diethyldithiocarbamate and Fe-citrate were used as in vivo spin-trapping reagents. The signal of NO spin adducts increased in accordance with the degree of ischemic insults. In an experiment on Wistar male rats the authors studied the effects of teturam, diethyldithiocarbamate and Esperale in combination with L-DOPA on the consumption of alcohol and metabolism of biogenic amines in the brain. The use of L-DOPA prolonged the inhibitary effect of teturam on alcohol consumption. The administration of L-DOPA following Esperale implantation prevented the development of the abstinence syndrome. An increase in the efficacy of teturam and Esperale under the effect of L-DOPA was attended by elevated synthesis of cerebral noradrenaline.

We report a case of disseminated aspergillosis involving both lung and brain in an adult female patient affected with bronchiectasis. Immunological follow-up was conducted before the clinical diagnosis and during the illness and revealed an excessively high helper-inducer/cytotoxic-suppressor (T4/T8) ratio. The effects of pre-test systemic administration of epinephrine on DDC-induced retrograde amnesia (RA) for discriminated Pavlovian fear-conditioning were examined in rats.
