BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the risk of development of colorectal adenomas in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) with and without colonic diverticulosis.

PURPOSE: A case of diffuse colonic lipomatosis, dolichosigmoid, hypertrophy of the epiploic appendices and diverticulosis of the colon producing constipation, recurrent sub-occlusive episodes with diarrhea and vomiting, and weight loss is reported.

The authors present a case of a 48 year-old man, who was diagnosed with several brownish sigmoid polyps of 1-2 cm size and diverticulosis on colonoscopy. Subsequently, laparoscopic sigmoid resection was carried out due to lower gastrointestinal bleeding. Histological examination revealed diverticulosis associated with polyposis. This rare entity is known in the literature as prolapse-type inflammatory polyp, which is a type of mucosal prolapse syndrome. The brownish discolouration was caused by hemosiderin deposition.

A review of the barium enema studies in 73 patients with diverticular disease of the colon and with and without associated neoplasm leads to the conclusion that the correct radiologic recognition of an associated neoplasm in a colon with diverticulitis or diverticulosis can be made only about half the time. The limitations of the radiographic method and radiologic findings in distinguishing diverticulitis from carcinoma should be more clearly recognized by the clinician.

OBJECTIVE: Right-sided type colonic diverticulosis has been predominant in Japan, in contrast to European counties where the left-sided type is predominant. Considering the recent change in the dietary habits of Japanese people to a more Western diet in urban areas of Japan, the features of colonic diverticulosis may also change to reflect a more Western type.
