Cardiac Disease and Screening in Breeding Dogs.

Acquired and congenital heart diseases are relatively common in dogs, particularly in certain breeds. Modes of inheritance and genetic causes have been established for several cardiac diseases within various breeds. Breed screening is used to try and reduce the prevalence of certain canine cardiac diseases. Although breed screening seems to help reduce the prevalence of canine heart disease, the outcomes of specific breeding programs are variable and depend on multiple factors.

Gastroduodenal ulceration in dogs with liver disease.

BACKGROUND: Liver disease is frequently cited as a cause of gastroduodenal ulceration (GDU) in dogs but studies regarding GDU and liver disease are limited. OBJECTIVES: To document the presence of GDU in dogs with liver disease. ANIMALS: Forty dogs that underwent liver biopsy, computed tomographic (CT) angiography or both at the University of Florida Small Animal Hospital to diagnose congenital or acquired liver disease. METHODS: Cross-sectional study. Dogs had gastroduodenoscopy performed with photographic and video documentation in a standardized fashion. Lesions (hemorrhage, erosions, ul

Treatment of dogs with severe heartworm disease.

Fortunately, the majority of dogs diagnosed with heartworm infection are asymptomatic (or have only mild symptoms such as intermittent cough) and go through adulticide therapy without complication. Complications occurring with heartworm infection and during its treatment most often directly reflect the pulmonary vascular and parenchymal injury inflicted by Dirofilaria immitis. Clinical signs may include exercise intolerance, frequent cough, hemoptysis, tachypnea, and dyspnea. Severe manifestations such as heart failure and caval syndrome may prove fatal. Acute hypersensitivity reactions after

Perianal pruritus in dogs with skin disease.

BACKGROUND: Perianal pruritus has been reported in dogs with anal sac disease but not in healthy dogs. Some authors describe it as typical of allergy, but there is little evidence in support of this. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: The aim was to investigate the association between perianal pruritus and canine atopic dermatitis (CAD), adverse food reaction (ARF) and other skin diseases in dogs. ANIMALS: Two hundred and fifty privately owned dogs with skin disease and without anal sac disease. METHODS: The presence or absence of perianal pruritus, macroscopic and cytological evaluation of the periana

Multicystic dysplastic kidney disease in a dog.

A 1-year-old female mongrel dog was evaluated for anorexia and vomiting of 4 days duration. Abdominal ultrasonographic findings revealed small kidneys with multiple anechoic cysts. The dog was euthanized due to poor prognosis. A full necropsy was performed, and the histopathologic findings were consistent with multicystic dysplastic kidney disease.

Bacterial corneal diseases in dogs and cats.

Corneal diseases are very common in small animals. Corneal disease associated with bacterial agents is frequent in the dog and maybe less frequent in the cat. The medical history, important steps of the ophthalmic examination, and the ophthalmic diagnostic tests that are relevant in such corneal conditions are outlined. Bacterial corneal diseases in dogs and cats are most commonly considered in one of two categories--bacterial ulcerative keratitis and corneal abscesses. The clinical aspects of these two entities as well as the therapeutic strategies available for general practitioners and opht

Progression of chronic renal disease in the dog.

Progressive loss of nephron function may be caused by persistence of factors that initiated renal disease. However, newer studies suggest that nephron damage is self-perpetuating once renal mass is reduced to some critical level. Original theories on mechanisms of self-perpetuated nephron injury focused on intraglomerular hypertension and glomerular hypertrophy, but several other factors have now been incriminated, including tubulointerstitial responses, proteinuria, and oxidative stress. Studies of dogs with surgically reduced renal mass (remnant kidney model of chronic renal disease) have al

Multisystemic inflammatory disease in a borzoi dog.

A six-week-old female borzoi puppy from a brother-sister mating developed a generalised illness characterised by anorexia, temporary intention tremor, episodic pyrexia, tachypnoea, conjunctivitis, otitis and neck pain. Haematological abnormalities included an inflammatory leukogram and regenerative anaemia. Blood cultures remained sterile; clinical chemistry values were unremarkable. The puppy had recurrent seizures and was euthanased when 18 weeks old. Post mortem examination revealed a multisystemic inflammatory disease involving thyroids, lymph nodes, spleen, pancreas, bladder and lung, but

Diet and periodontal disease in dogs and cats.

A review of relevant literature was undertaken because of concerns about a possible relationship between pet foods, development of periodontal disease, and secondary adverse effects on general health. It was concluded that, while changes in feeding methods in recent decades have arguably improved pet health by reducing or preventing diseases associated with nutritional deficiencies and excesses, periodontal disease remains a serious, diet-related problem. There is reasonable evidence that soft diets are associated with increased frequency and severity of periodontal disease, and that harder fo

Management of liver disease in dogs and cats.

Liver disease may cause a variety of clinical signs, including depression, anorexia, weakness, weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, abdominal pain, jaundice, ascites and CNS signs. Treatment is aimed at eliminating the cause, providing supportive care, and preventing secondary complications. Rest facilitates liver regeneration. Hypokalemia, respiratory alkalosis and hypoglycemia may complicate liver disease. Fluids should be given IV rather than SC to severely dehydrated animals. Preferred solutions include Ringer's and half-strength saline with 2.5% dextrose. Solutions containing lactate s

Management of liver disease in dogs and cats.

Ampicillin or amoxicillin is a good initial choice for treatment of liver disease involving bacteria. Cephalosporins, among other antibiotics, can be used with aminoglycosides for a broad-spectrum effect. Metronidazole may benefit patients with hepatic encephalopathy. Tetracycline, penicillins and cephalosporins are good choices for biliary disease. Corticosteroids are indicated for chronic active hepatitis, cholangiohepatitis, immune-mediated hepatopathy, and hepatic lymphosarcoma and mast-cell tumors. D-penicillamine is used to treat hepatic Cu toxicosis. Colchicine has been used to combat h

Diseases of the adrenal cortex of dogs and cats.

Of cases of hyperadrenocorticism in small animals 80-85% are the result of adrenocortical hyperplasia. Middle-aged or older Poodles, Dachshunds, Boston Terriers and Boxers are most commonly affected, and cats rarely. Clinical signs include polydipsia, polyuria, alopecia, abdominal distension, lethargy, weakness, hepatomegaly, calcinosis cutis, testicular atrophy and anestrus. Hematologic and biochemical changes may include neutrophilia, lymphopenia, monocytosis, eosinopenia, increased blood levels of alkaline phosphatase, SGPT, cholesterol, Na and glucose, and decreased K and T4 levels. Awareness of zoonotic diseases and parasite control practices: a survey of dog and cat owners in Qatar.

BACKGROUND: Qatar is one of the wealthiest and fastest growing economies in the world, experiencing a rapid increase in human and pet populations. Given the paucity of data on prophylactic measures against endo- and ectoparasites of pets in Qatar, as well as on the owners' awareness of zoonotic diseases, a questionnaire was conducted. METHODS: From July to November 2017, 150 multiple-choice questionnaires were administered to dog and/or cat owners who attended two veterinary clinics in Doha. RESULTS: Only 54% (81/150) owners were aware of transmittable diseases between animals and humans. "Z
