'I know it's not normal but it's normal to me, and that's all that matters': experiences of young adults conceived through egg donation, sperm donation, and surrogacy.

STUDY QUESTION: What are thoughts and feelings of young adults born following egg donation, sperm donation, and surrogacy? SUMMARY ANSWER: Young adults felt either unconcerned or positive about the method of their conception. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Much of what we know about adults born to heterosexual couples following anonymous donation has come from samples of donor conceived people who had found out about their origins during adulthood. There have been no studies of how young adults born through surrogacy feel about their conception and towards their surrogate. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURAT

'Of course he's our child': transitions in social parenthood in donor sperm recipient families.

This study examines transitions and consistencies in the views of donor sperm recipients on ‘parenthood’ and ‘family’ over time. A longitudinal qualitative study was carried out with 19 donor sperm recipients. Interviews took place during pregnancy, at birth and 1.5–2 years after birth and were analysed using a grounded theory approach. Participants intending to disclose the donor conception to their offspring (13/19) exhibited a transition from feeling anxious prior to birth to feeling more confident during the toddler stage about their parenthood. Previous anxieties about the lack of biologi

The donor, the father, and the imaginary constitution of the family: parents' constructions in the case of donor insemination.

Current international policy trends in the field of medically assisted conception are moving towards increased openness of information regarding the nature of conception where donated gametes are involved. In the case of donor insemination this means that the donor is no longer anonymous, offspring have the right to access information about the donor's identity, and parents are encouraged to tell children the nature of their donor-assisted conception. Until recently, however, the practice of donor insemination has tended to create the conditions for ignoring, or erasing, the existence of the d

Parenting infants conceived by gamete donation.

In recent years, concerns have been raised regarding the potentially negative consequences of gamete donation for parent-child relationships. Findings are presented of a study of families with an infant conceived by gamete donation. Fifty donor insemination families and 51 egg donation families were compared with 80 natural conception families on standardized interview and questionnaire measures of the psychological well-being of the parents, the quality of parent-child relationships, and infant temperament. The differences that were identified indicated more positive parent-child relationship

Experiences of offspring searching for and contacting their donor siblings and donor.

This study investigates a new phenomenon whereby individuals conceived by donor insemination are searching for and contacting their donor and/or 'donor siblings' (i.e. donor offspring conceived by the same donor who are their genetic half siblings). On-line questionnaires were completed by members of the Donor Sibling Registry (DSR), a US-based registry that facilitates contact between donor conception families who share the same donor. Of the 165 donor offspring who completed the survey, 15% were searching for their donor siblings, 13% were searching for their donor, and 64% were searching fo

Children conceived by gamete donation: psychological adjustment and mother-child relationships at age 7.

An increasing number of babies are being born using donated sperm, where the child lacks a genetic link to the father, or donated eggs, where the child lacks a genetic link to the mother. This study examined the impact of telling children about their donor conception on mother-child relationships and children's psychological adjustment. Assessments of maternal positivity, maternal negativity, mother-child interaction, and child adjustment were administered to 32 egg donation, 36 donor insemination, and 54 natural conception families with a 7-year-old child. Although no differences were found f

Enable families with donor-conceived children to tailor their family story. Recommendations for policy and practice regarding legal age limits for accessing donor information in The Netherlands.

In 2020, the Dutch government issued a call to investigate age limits for donor-conceived people to access donor information because there was insufficient justification for such limits in the Dutch law. This question is equally important in a changing landscape of donor conception due to searching using direct-to-consumer genetic tests and social media. This paper describes recommendations for policy and practice based on an interdisciplinary (ethical, legal, psychosocial and empirical) research. Findings show that no age limits can be adequately justified, including the current ones. Consequ

Psycho-social, ethical and legal arguments for and against the retrospective release of information about donors to donor-conceived individuals in Australia.

In the February 2011 report on its inquiry into the past and present practices of donor conception in Australia, the Australian Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs References Committee called for the introduction of legislation to regulate donor conception in all jurisdictions that do not have it in place "as a matter of priority". It further called for the establishment, "as a matter of priority", of a national register of donors to enable donor-conceived individuals to access identifying information about their donor. The Senate Committee left open the question as to whether the legislat

'Are you asking me if we had sex to conceive?' To whom do parents of twins disclose mode of conception and what do they feel about being asked?

There are no data on whether parents of twins will disclose mode of conception to researchers or to their children, who will be informants in adulthood. We sent 1600 questionnaires about this via the Victorian branch of the Australian Multiple Birth Association, to be returned anonymously. Parents were asked how their twins were conceived and whether those who used assisted conception would disclose this to researchers studying assisted conception, twin pregnancy or twin children, or to their children. Comments were invited. Altogether 975 (61%) questionnaires were returned and 389 (40%) indic

Home-insemination: the motivations and experiences of same-sex and gender diverse couples using self-insemination and known donors to conceive in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Donor conception that occurs outside of clinical fertility settings is understood to be increasingly common, yet research on this practice remains limited. Drawing on interviews with eleven participants, this study explored the motivations and experiences of same-sex and gender diverse couples who used known donors and home insemination methods to conceive. While participants were parents of children conceived after the introduction of the Human Assisted Reproductive Technology [HART] Act (2004) in Aotearoa New Zealand, conception outside regulated settings meant they were not subject to the m

[Intrauterine insemination with donor semen. Treatment of involuntary childlessness caused by male infertility].

Intrauterine insemination with cryopreserved donor semen was performed in 114 women in a total of menstrual 381 cycles during the period 1.2.1991 to 15.5.1993. Eighty-one pregnancies were recorded corresponding to a conception rate of 21% per insemination cycle. After ten cycles the probability of conception and expected delivery was respectively 96% and 86%. The results show that intrauterine insemination with donor semen is a good treatment for couples with male infertility. Ultrasonic measurement of the follicles and timing of hCG injection were used for optimal timing of intrauterine donor

Offspring searching for their sperm donors: how family type shapes the process.

BACKGROUND: This study examines the findings from the largest survey to date of donor-inseminated (DI) offspring and focuses on respondents' learning of the method of their conception and their desire to contact their donor. METHODS: Online questionnaires were completed by 741 DI offspring, of whom 61.8% have heterosexual parents and 38.2% have lesbian parents. Respondents were recruited via the Donor Sibling Registry, a non-profit US-based international registry that facilitates communication between donor-conceived offspring and their non-biological and biological relatives. Desire for Parenthood and Associated Trends in Czech Lesbian Women.

INTRODUCTION: Worldwide, there are more lesbians who chose to have children in the context of a same-sex relationship than ever before. The Czech studies focusing on this issue, including the analysis of methods of conception, are limited. AIM: We aimed to examine the changes over time in the desire of Czech lesbian women for children and to analyze their chosen methods of conception. METHODS: We analyzed retrospectively the personal history of lesbian patients who visited our clinic in the period from 2009 to 2017. Our sample (n = 318) was divided into 2 groups: Group A - our patients betwe

Being a donor-child: wishes for parental support, peer support and counseling.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed at exploring the wishes of Dutch donor-conceived offspring for parental support, peer support and counseling and sought to contribute to the improvement of health care for all parties involved with assisted reproductive technologies. METHODS: We held semi-structured in-depth interviews with 24 donor-conceived offspring (Mage = 26.9, range 17-41) born within father-mother, two-mother and single mother families. The majority of the donor offspring was conceived with semen of anonymous donors. All offspring were recruited by network organizations and snowball sampling. The i

Donor information considered important to donors, recipients and offspring: an Australian perspective.

Donor conception research supports open-identity donor programmes and disclosure to donor-conceived offspring. This study examines Australian donors', recipients' and donor-conceived offspring's views on the importance of different types of biographical information about the donor. Participants (125 recipients, 39 donors (known, identity-release and anonymous), 23 donor-conceived offspring) completed an online or paper self-administered anonymous questionnaire. Individuals rated the importance of 15 types of biographical information and subsequently chose the three they deemed most important.

Disclosure patterns of mode of conception among mothers and fathers-5-year follow-up of the Copenhagen Multi-centre Psychosocial Infertility (COMPI) cohort.

BACKGROUND: Most studies on disclosure of mode of conception after fertility treatment have focused on donor insemination. We present a large, longitudinal cohort study of fertility patients who conceived through a variety of fertility treatments, including both non-donor and donor techniques. METHODS: A cohort of 2812 women and men (n = 1406 couples) received questionnaires when initiating fertility treatment and at 1-year and 5-year follow-ups. At the 5-year follow up, the response rate was 69.4% and 1036 of the responding participants had at least one child born after fertility treatment.
