Global prevalence of alcohol use and binge drinking during pregnancy, and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder.

Alcohol use during pregnancy is an established cause of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), with heavy drinking during pregnancy being explicitly linked to fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). This paper presents recent estimates of the prevalence of: (i) any amount of alcohol use during pregnancy; (ii) one or more binge drinking episode(s) (4 or more standard drinks on a single occasion) during pregnancy; (iii) FAS; and (iv) FASD among the general population globally and by World Health Organization region. It is apparent, based on the presented estimates, that alcohol use and binge drinking occ

Perceived changes in drinking are a mechanism of spillover effects from a brief alcohol intervention conducted in a college social network.

OBJECTIVE: In a prior clinical trial, heavy drinkers in a network of first-year college students who had reciprocal network ties with recipients of a brief motivational intervention (BMI) showed a reduction in alcohol use. The objective of the present study was to identify the mechanisms through which this spillover effect occurred. METHOD: Heavy-drinking participants (N = 148) who had a reciprocal network tie (i.e., were close friends) with a BMI intervention recipient or a natural history control were identified (index participants; N = 83), and three models investigated putative mechanisms

Drinking patterns of alcohol intoxicated adolescents in the emergency department: A latent class analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The increasing number of children and adolescents in need of emergency medical treatment following acute alcohol intoxication has been a major public health concern in Europe in recent years. However, little is known about drinking habits and associated risks in this population. To our knowledge, this is the first study to examine drinking patterns and associated risks in adolescent emergency department patients following alcohol intoxication. The aim of this study is to establish a classification system for admitted adolescents METHODS: Latent class analysis was used to identif

Effect of sex on ethanol consumption and conditioned taste aversion in adolescent and adult rats.

RATIONALE: Vulnerability to alcoholism is determined by many factors, including the balance of pleasurable vs. aversive alcohol-induced sensations: pleasurable sensations increase intake, while aversive sensations decrease it. Female sex and adolescent age are associated with lower sensitivity to intake-reducing effects and more rapid development of alcohol abuse. OBJECTIVES: This study assessed voluntary drinking and the aversive effects of alcohol to determine whether these measures are inversely related across the sexes and development. METHODS: Voluntary drinking of 20 % ethanol in an ev

A brief intervention for prenatal alcohol use: an in-depth look.

About 20% of pregnant women will drink alcohol, even though no universally safe level of prenatal alcohol consumption has been established. This study of 123 alcohol screen-positive pregnant women receiving a brief intervention in the 16th week of gestation examines the relationship of drinking goals, reasons for the goals, recognition of situations increasing risk of drinking, and subsequent antepartum consumption. While women who named abstinence as their antepartum drinking goal were more likely not to be consuming alcohol at the time of study enrollment (chi(2) = 16.80, df = 1, p =.001), c

Reward System Activation in Response to Alcohol Advertisements Predicts College Drinking.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we assess whether activation of the brain's reward system in response to alcohol advertisements is associated with college drinking. Previous research has established a relationship between exposure to alcohol marketing and underage drinking. Within other appetitive domains, the relationship between cue exposure and behavioral enactment is known to rely on activation of the brain's reward system. However, the relationship between neural activation to alcohol advertisements and alcohol consumption has not been studied in a nondisordered population. METHOD: In this cro

Fluoride Levels in Austrian Drinking Water Are Insufficient for Effective Caries Prevention.

Background/Objectives: Fluorides play a well-established role in preventing dental caries, primarily by enhancing enamel resistance and inhibiting demineralization. Drinking water is among the most important sources of systemic fluoride intake. In 1993 and 2007, national analyses of Austrian drinking water revealed fluoride levels below 0.5 mg/L in almost all regions, which is insufficient for effective caries prevention. The present study aimed to re-examine the fluoride concentration in Austrian drinking water. Methods: Drinking water was collected in a total of 1985 Austrian municipalities.

Low-to-moderate gestational alcohol use and intrauterine growth retardation, low birthweight, and preterm delivery.

PURPOSE: Heavy drinking during pregnancy is an established risk factor for fetal alcohol syndrome and other adverse perinatal outcomes. However, there is still debate as to the effects of low-to-moderate drinking during pregnancy. METHODS: This prospective investigation was based on 2714 singleton live births at Yale-New Haven Hospital during 1988-1992. Alcohol drinking during pregnancy was evaluated with respect to intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR), preterm delivery, and low birthweight. RESULTS: Mild drinking, defined as > 0.10-0.25 oz of absolute alcohol per day, during the first mon

Traumatic stress-enhanced ethanol drinking: Sex, but not stress responsivity, alters sensitivity to the effects of a CRF-R1 antagonist and a GPR39 agonist in mice.

BACKGROUND: Predator stress (PS) is used to model trauma leading to post-traumatic stress disorder, and it increases ethanol drinking in a proportion of male and female rodents. The goals of the present studies were to identify male and female mice with prior binge drinking experience that exhibited sensitivity and resilience to PS-enhanced drinking and then to test two target molecules (corticotropin releasing factor receptor 1 [CRF-R1] antagonist NBI-27914 [NBI] and G-protein coupled receptor 39 [GPR39] agonist TC-G 1008 [TC-G]) for their ability to selectively reduce PS-enhanced drinking.

Beliefs and attitudes about men's alcohol-related sexual harassment and aggression (BAMASHA): Development and initial validation of a new scale.

BACKGROUND: Men's perpetration of sexual violence (SV) toward women in drinking venues is a pervasive yet understudied phenomenon with significant downstream consequences for women. Although men's negative attitudes and beliefs toward women play an important role in SV, current attitude measures are limited in that they do not focus on SV specific to drinking contexts, thereby precluding understandings of SV in this context. As such, we developed and evaluated a measure of beliefs and attitudes about men's alcohol-related sexual harassment and aggression (BAMASHA) toward women in drinking venu

Event-Level Examinations of Impaired Control, Protective Behavioral Strategies, and Alcohol-Related Consequences.

OBJECTIVE: Impaired control over alcohol use is a well-established, prospective risk factor for alcohol use disorder. However, research is mixed regarding the risk conveyed by event-level impaired control behaviors. While most of this research evaluates unplanned drinking episodes, a continuous estimate, such as the number of unintended drinks consumed, appears to be an important but overlooked consideration. Moreover, there is limited understanding of protective factors that may buffer the effects of impaired control at the daily level. Thus, the current study tested the association between u

Neural correlates of proactive avoidance deficits and alcohol use motives in problem drinking.

Physical pain and negative emotions represent two distinct drinking motives that contribute to harmful alcohol use. Proactive avoidance, in contrast, can reduce consumption in response to these motives but appears to be impaired in those with problem drinking. Despite such evidence, proactive avoidance and its underlying neural deficits have not been assessed experimentally. How these deficits inter-relate with drinking motives to influence alcohol use also remains unclear. The current study leveraged neuroimaging data in forty-one problem and forty-one social drinkers who performed a probabil

Positive and Negative Jealousy in the Association Between Problem Drinking and IPV Perpetration.

In the context of established associations between alcohol problems and intimate partner violence (IPV), the current study investigated whether jealousy has positive and negative dimensions, and whether they differentially moderate the association between problem drinking and IPV perpetration in heavy-drinking college students (N=448). Factor analyses suggested positive and negative dimensions of jealousy. Whereas negative jealousy was conceptualized by the traditional definition of jealousy, positive jealousy reflected relationship commitment and emotional distress upon considering one's part

Drinking and condom use: results from an event-based daily diary.

Although it is often assumed that drinking alcohol interferes with condom use, most studies on this topic do not meet the conditions required for causal interpretation. We examined the association of drinking to condom use using data from diaries of alcohol use and sexual encounters, collected over 8 weeks from college students and clients of a sexually transmitted disease clinic. This method establishes the temporal relationships between drinking and condom use and controls for individual differences by using a within-subjects analysis. Multilevel models that predicted condom use from alcohol

Visual changes mediated by beer in retrobulbar neuritis--an investigative case report.

A patient with established retrobulbar neuritis and Uhthoff's phenomenon who claimed that his visual acuity improved after drinking beer was assessed by detailed quantitative psychophysical tests. Studies of electrophysiological responses and biochemical levels of blood serum before and after drinking on several occasions were also made. The results of tests of contrast sensitivity, spectral sensitivity, flicker sensitivity, and visually evoked potential confirmed his observation. Some mechanisms for this phenomenon are considered.

Associations between ZIP code-level alcohol outlet density and binge drinking among people who inject drugs in 22 US metropolitan areas.

BACKGROUND: Although alcohol outlet density (AOD) is associated with drinking behaviors in the general population, little evidence exists about this relationship among people who inject drugs (PWID). Establishing this connection is particularly important, as alcohol use exacerbates the risk of opioid overdose. This study investigated 1) the association between ZIP code-level AOD and binge drinking among PWID who use opioids, and 2) the potential moderating effect of race/ethnicity on the AOD-binge drinking relationship. METHODS: This analysis linked 2018 National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (

Nitrogen species in drinking water indicate potential exposure pathway for Balkan Endemic Nephropathy.

This study explored two hypotheses relating elevated concentrations of nitrogen species in drinking water and the disease Balkan Endemic Nephropathy (BEN). Drinking water samples were collected from a variety of water supplies in both endemic and non-endemic villages in the Vratza and Montana districts of Bulgaria. The majority of well water samples exceeded US drinking water standards for nitrate + nitrite. No statistically significant difference was observed for any of the nitrogen species between villages classified as endemic and non-endemic. Other constituents (sodium, potassium and chlor
