Attitudes and behaviours on driving under the influence of drugs: a multigroup analysis of non-drug users and people who use methamphetamine.

BACKGROUND: Stimulant-affected drivers are overrepresented in global road trauma statistics, however, studies to date have not accurately defined how drug consumption contributes to increased risk of road trauma. This study examined whether attitudes toward drug driving predicts dangerous driving behaviour among people who currently use methamphetamine, and whether this differs to individuals with no history of any drug use. METHOD: Three attitude factors (favourable attitudes toward risks, unfavourable attitudes toward sanctions, and favourable peer attitudes) were explored using an adapted

Driving under the influence of drugs: Correlation between blood psychoactive drug concentrations and cognitive impairment. A narrative review taking into account forensic issues.

Driving under the influence of alcohol has been shown to increase the risk of involvement in road traffic collisions (RTCs) however, less is known about the effects of illicit drugs, and a clear correlation between drug concentrations and RTC risk is still debated. The goal of this narrative review is to assess the current literature regarding the most detected psychoactive drugs in RTC (ethanol, amphetamines, cannabis, opioids and cocaine), in relation to driving performance. Evidence on impaired driving due to psychoactive substances, forensic issues relating to the assessment of the impact

The effect on problematic drinking behavior of a brief motivational interview shortly after a first arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol: a randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: In medical settings, motivational interviewing-based "brief intervention" (BI) counseling reduces alcohol-related risk-taking behavior and harm in high-risk populations. Individuals arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI) are another at-risk population. We sought to determine whether a BI administered shortly after a first DUI arrest might decrease problematic drinking behavior. METHODS: We conducted a single-center, parallel-group, double-blinded superiority randomized trial (NCT01270217), enrolling first-time DUI arrestees at a county jail from December 2010 th

Suicidal ideation and driving under the influence of alcohol and marijuana among U.S. adults: Findings from the 2021-2023 National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts may exhibit reduced self-preservation, increased impulsivity, or a greater tendency toward risk-taking behaviors -factors that could plausibly elevate the likelihood of driving under the influence. Suicidal ideation has also been linked to diminished engagement in safety-promoting behaviors such as seatbelt use and reduced health-promoting attitudes and behaviors. The present study investigates the association between suicidal ideation with driving under the influence of alcohol (DUIA) and marijuana (DUIM) among US adults. METHOD: Data

Patterns of Drug and Polydrug Detection in Drivers Suspected of Driving Under the Influence of an Intoxicant in Ireland 2019-2020: A Latent Class Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Driving under the influence of drugs is a major risk factor for road traffic collisions. While increasing harms are observed in relation to polydrug use, evidence is needed about this issue in the context of road safety. We examined polydrug use patterns in drivers providing samples for toxicological analysis in Ireland between 2019 and 2020. METHODS: A cross-sectional study using LC-MS toxicology results from the Medical Bureau of Road Safety, which is responsible for the chemical testing of intoxicants in all drivers arrested under the Road Traffic Acts 1968-2024 in Ireland. Association between alcohol and drug use and arrest for driving under the influence after crash involvement in a rural area of Norway: a case-control study.

OBJECTIVES: The rate of deaths caused by road traffic crashes is particularly high in rural areas. It has been hypothesised that one factor that may contribute is differences in patterns of alcohol use. The aim was to compare the prevalence of psychoactive substances among crash-involved drivers arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI) who are tested for alcohol and drugs and recent random drivers in a rural area. Furthermore, we investigated the association between traffic crashes and driving after using alcohol, illicit or medicinal drugs either alone or in combination. M

Biomarkers of recent drinking, retrograde extrapolation of blood-alcohol concentration and plasma-to-blood distribution ratio in a case of driving under the influence of alcohol.

This case report describes the police investigation of a road-traffic accident involving a collision at night (01.00 am) between a car and a truck in which a passenger in the car was killed. The driver of the truck was found responsible for the crash although a roadside breath-alcohol test was negative (<0.1 mg/L breath or 20 mg/100 mL blood). Because of injuries sustained in the crash, the female driver of the car was not breath-tested at the time but was transported to a local hospital for emergency treatment. After swabbing the skin with isopropanol an indwelling catheter was inserted at 01

Limits of the quasi-induced exposure method when compared with the standard case-control design. Application to the estimation of risks associated with driving under the influence of cannabis or alcohol.

The disparities between the quasi-induced exposure (QIE) method and a standard case-control approach with crash responsibility as disease of interest are studied. The 10,748 drivers who had been given compulsory cannabis and alcohol tests subsequent to involvement in a fatal crash in France between 2001 and 2003 were used to compare the two approaches. Odds ratios were assessed using conditional and unconditional logistic regressions. While both approaches found that drivers under the influence of alcohol or cannabis increased the risk of causing a fatal crash, the two approaches are not equiv
