Thyroid adenocarcinoma was diagnosed in an adult bald eagle (Haliaeetus leukocephalus) with clinical signs of weakness manifested by inability to fly. Physical examination at the time of admission revealed dried blood in the pharynx and glottis and the presence of pharyngeal trichomonads. Radiographs revealed a large soft tissue mass in the area of the left coracoid and clavicular bones. One month following successful treatment for trichomoniasis, the bird suffered an acute episode of tracheal hemorrhage and died. Necropsy revealed a large mass within the interclavicular air sac. The histologi

Eagle syndrome is a rare condition characterized by an elongated cranial styloid process (≥30.00 mm), leading to pain and dysfunction in the surrounding anatomy. Current treatment options include styloidectomy, analgesics, corticosteroids, and antidepressants. The fascial distortion model (FDM), a newer osteopathic approach, offers a different perspective on treating Eagle syndrome. This case study examines the use of the FDM to manage Eagle syndrome by treating the cranial styloid elongation as a continuum distortion (CD). A 27-year-old female with a 3-year history of left-sided facial pain a

Eagle's syndrome is a condition characterized by an elongated styloid process or a calcified stylohyoid ligament, which can lead to a plethora of symptoms, such as neck and facial pain upon movement, dysphagia, pharyngeal foreign body sensation, headache, and vertigo-like sensations. This pathology may affect one or both of a patient's styloid processes (unilateral or bilateral), with most of these cases going undiagnosed due to the vague nature of their symptoms. Nonetheless, the diagnosis of Eagle's syndrome must derive from the combined findings of both clinical examination and radiographic

Vascular complications occurring in Eagle syndrome are seldom described. The aim of this study was to systematically review the occurrence, characteristics, and management outcomes of vascular complications occurring in Eagle syndrome. A systematic review was conducted with a search in several databases. The research question was "What characterizes Eagle syndrome with vascular complications and how should it be managed?" The initial search yielded 4145 results; 150 of these were included, reporting a total of 231 patients with vascular complications. Arterial impingement (67.5%) was more freq

Introduction Eagle syndrome is a rare and an often misdiagnosed entity in otorhinolaryngology. Objective To determine the efficacy of the surgical treatment for Eagle syndrome. Methods The present prospective study included 25 patients who presented with complaints of pain in the throat, ear, and neck, as well as difficulty and/or pain while swallowing; they were assessed for Eagle syndrome. As per patient profile, we performed a clinical assessments along with orthopantomograms (OPGs), three-dimensional computed tomography (3D CT) scans, and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Pain was a

BACKGROUND: Eagle's syndrome (ES) is a term describing a group of symptoms associated with the elongation of the styloid process (SP) of the temporal bone or with ossification of the stylohyoid ligament. Clinically, it manifests through pain in the orofacial and pharyngeal regions, similar to that experienced by patients with temporomandibular joint disease. The presented paper aims to assess the evaluation of the success of surgical treatment and the complications associated with such treatment.
METHODS: Our retrospective study includes nine patients with ES treated in our Department Oral an

A 28-year-old male harpy eagle (Harpia harpyja) with a history of anorexia, hyporexia, lethargy, and progressive weight loss was found dead and submitted for post-mortem examination. Gross findings include dark brown discolouration of testes and lungs; the testes were bilaterally enlarged, glistening brown-grey to blackish in appearance, firm, smooth, and multilobulated. The lungs contained a mass with similar features to the testicles, irregularly shaped with multiple nodules. Histology of testis showed round, polygonal and pleomorphic cells, containing melanin pigments and a typical eosinoph

Eagle syndrome is a rare condition characterized by an abnormally elongated styloid process with or without abnormal direction and/or ossification of the styloid ligament. Clinically, it consists of throat and neck pain radiating to the ear. Here, we present the case of a 34-year-old female with the complaint of left-sided neck pain below the ear for the past year. The patient had tried different analgesics after seeing different doctors, but the pain did not resolve. After conducting radiological investigations at the hospital, a diagnosis of Eagle syndrome was made. The patient was treated w

INTRODUCTION: Eagle's syndrome is a rare condition that refers to chronic recurrent pain in the oropharynx, face, and neck due to elongation of the styloid process or calcification of the stylohyoid ligament. It can be treated medically or surgically through a styloidectomy. In this paper, we review our experience with the two surgical approaches for the management of Eagle's syndrome.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review, which covered the period between 1997 and 2008. The review included seven patients with a long-standing diagnosis of Eagle's syndrome. Six patie

A 45 year old man presented with persistent pain in throat and otalgia. Clinical and radiographic evaluation confirmed the diagnosis of elongated styloid process syndrome. Surgical shortening of the styloid processes gave relief. The etiopathogenesis, presentation and management of the condition is discussed.

As classically described, Eagle syndrome is an entity where patients develop pain or neurologic manifestations arising from an elongated styloid process and/or an ossified stylohyoid ligament irritating or compressing adjacent cranial nerves or the carotid arteries. Over the past few years, there have been reports of actual injury to the internal carotid artery with dissection, occlusion, and strokes. We present 3 cases identified after blunt trauma: 1 due to carotid compression and 2 due to actual injury to the internal carotid artery. Eagle syndrome should be a consideration in any patient w

An approximately 6-mo-old female bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) was presented for an inability to fly and bilateral drooped wings. Pectoral muscle atrophy with a moderate polycythemia was present. Over the course of 3 wk, there were no improvements in flight capacity, although the bird gained substantial weight. Further investigation revealed a prominent cyanosis that was responsive to oxygen therapy, a chronic respiratory acidosis with hypoxia, a cardiac murmur, and a persistent polycythemia. No obvious antemortem etiology for the clinical findings was discovered on computerized tomogr

BACKGROUND: Eagle's syndrome (Elongated styloid process) is often misdiagnosed due to its vague symptomatology. The diagnosis relies on detail history taking, palpation of styloid process in tonsillar fossa and imaging modalities.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the length and medial angulation of elongated styloid process with the help of three dimensional computed tomography (3D CT) scan and to describe our clinical and surgical experience with patients suffering from Eagle's syndrome.
METHOD: Prospective, analytical study conducted from August 2011 to August 2012 among 39 patients with Eagle's syndr

This article is an introduction to Eagle syndrome as a differential diagnosis in patients with lateral neck pain, a symptom, which is often difficult to diagnose and where the accepted treatment covers a variety of forms. This was the case for a 51 year-old man with lateral neck pain and a crunchy sensation/sound when he turned his head. After years of pain, the right examination and a computed tomography finally suggested Eagle syndrome. The patient had severe symptoms and was treated with an operation by which part of the ossificated stylohyoid ligament was removed. The operation relieved hi

We conducted a retrospective study to determine the treatment outcomes of 6 patients who had either unilateral or bilateral elongated styloid processes and symptoms consistent with Eagle syndrome. Five of these patients had undergone transcervical resection of the styloid process, with relief of symptoms over the follow-up period (mean: 8 mo). Two of the 5 patients experienced a transient weakness in the marginal mandibular nerve, and both recovered completely. The transcervical surgical approach to resection in patients with elongated styloid processes and Eagle syndrome appears to be safe an

Eleven cases of Eagle's syndrome or long styloid process syndrome are presented. It is a rare entity, which is not commonly suspected in clinical practice. Symptoms were dull and persistent pharyngeal pain, dysphagia, and facial pain. In addition to careful clinical examination, the use of plain radiographs, orthopantomograms or CT scan has allowed accurate preoperative diagnosis of this syndrome. Surgical treatment has positively resolved the symptoms in these cases. The International literature is discussed regarding anatomy, symptoms and treatment of the long styloid process syndrome.

Eagle's syndrome is a relatively common disorder that is frequently misdiagnosed. It occurs more frequently in women. Presenting symptoms generally include posterior oropharyngeal pain, intermittent glossitis, and phantom foreign body discomfort of the pharynx. Surgical removal of elongated styloid processes generally provides relief of symptoms.

Orofacial pain, as well as other neurologic symptoms, can result from the presence of an elongated styloid process. These symptoms are familiar to dentists and can indicate a broad range of dental conditions. Eagle's syndrome of the type, symptomatic elongated styloid process, has been described and a case presented. We believe that the simple diagnostic procedure of palpation of the tonsillar fossa should be routine during oral examination. Eagel's syndrome must be considered as a differential diagnosis of hemifacial pain of obscure causation.
