The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the wearing of hearing protection has a positive influence on stress levels during an MRI examination in dogs under anaesthesia. To this end, the stress hormones cortisol and arginine vasopressin (AVP) were measured in the saliva of patients wearing hearing protection during an MRI scan, as well as in the control group without hearing protection, before and after the scan. Pulse rate and noise level were also measured during the MRI. It was shown that salivary cortisol concentrations in dogs without hearing protection increased during the

Earplugs can reduce the risk of hearing loss and tinnitus. However, earplug use during noisy recreational activities is uncommon, and methods for increasing uptake and regular use have had limited efficacy. The aim of the present study was to examine barriers and enablers of ever-performers (e.g., people who have used earplugs) and never-performers (e.g., people who have not used earplugs) to identify targets to inform the content of interventions to increase uptake and regular use of earplugs in recreational settings. The Capabilities, Opportunities, and Motivations model of Behaviour (COM-B)

AIM: To detect noise levels, generated by high-powered tools in orthopaedic theatres at varying distances from the operating site, and its impact on hearing in staff and patients.
METHODS: Sound-level meter was used to measure the sound level generated by various high-powered tools in routine orthopaedic procedures, at varying distances from the operating site. These recorded noise levels were compared against the UK noise safety guidelines.
RESULT: We found that the noise generated was often significantly higher than the safety guidelines.
CONCLUSION: Noise levels in orthopaedic theatres c

The theoretical and practical consequences of the experiments described in part I are discussed. They concern the following topics: 1. The stability of the occlusion effect: in contrary to the opinions expressed in the literature--the stability of the effect for a particular earphone is of range of normal deviation in threshold of hearing. 2. Bone conduction threshold shift in occlusion effect represents change in proportions of the air- and bone-components of the normal bone conduction threshold: an increase of the air component on the expense of the bone component. The shift do not represent

Interventions to increase hearing protection behaviours within noisy recreational settings are limited by the lack of an underpinning evidence base. The aim of the present study was to identify targets for interventions in a population exposed to recreational noise, including those who had used hearing protection (ever-performers) versus those who had not (never-performers). A cross-sectional survey was administered to 185 UK adults who had been involved in noisy recreational activities. Participants had an average age of 36.79 years; the majority were women (68.1%), from a white ethnic backgr

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss is prevalent and disabling, yet little is known about the extent of recreational noise exposure and hearing protection use. The aim of the present research was to estimate the extent of recreational noise exposure and hearing protection use in a sample representative of the UK adult population.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of 10,401 UK adults who were representative of the population.
RESULTS: More than 7000 people (n = 7590, 73.0%) reported exposure to recreational noise excluding headphone and earphone use in the last 12 months. Just 158 people (2

Objective: To reduce the risk of hearing injury, musicians are often recommended custom-made musicians' hearing protectors (MHP). Studies report benefits of use however, many still report challenges leading to relatively low uptake and inconsistent usage. Person-centred approaches to health have been shown to improve patient outcomes, and these principles may be translatable to musicians' hearing care. The aim was to investigate if use of, and satisfaction with, MHP is influenced by the treatment delivered to musicians by audiologists.Design: Participants were randomly allocated to one of four

Sound pressure levels were measured on a military ship during firing of a Heavy Machine Gun (HMG). Measurements were made at three locations on the ship's bridge (the wheelhouse) and one location on the starboard bridge wing. The highest peak sound pressure levels measured on the bridge wing and on the bridge were 160.7 dB(C) (2170 Pa) and 122.7 dB(C) (27.3 Pa), respectively. The highest sound exposure levels measured on the bridge wing and on the bridge corresponding to one round being fired were 127.8 dB(A) and 88.9 dB(A), respectively. The ship's structure provided about 40 dB attenuation i

Surprisingly little is known about the ability of adult human listeners to learn to localize sounds in the free field. In this study, we presented broadband noise bursts at 24 equally spaced locations in a 360° horizontal plane in both normal-hearing conditions and when listeners were fitted with a unilateral earplug. Localization improvement was found over the initial four training sessions, prior to plug insertion which produced an immediate and profound impairment in localization, particularly on the side of the plug. Subsequent training with the plug in place over the next 5 days showed co

One of the major occupational hazards of working in military service is being subjected to intense impulse noise. We analyzed the clinical presentation of acoustic traumas, induced by mass rifle gunshot noise during military training, in unprotected patients. We evaluated 189 soldiers who had otologic symptoms after rifle shooting exercises without using any hearing protection. All soldiers had been training on the K2 rifle. We took medical histories; conducted physical examinations and hearing evaluations (pure-tone audiometry, speech audiometry, and impedence audiometry); and distributed the

In military life, noise has unusual characteristics and constitutes a serious hazard for hearing. Hearing impairments due to the exposure to weapon noises represent an important prejudice for the health of many soldiers. A special attention is given to (i) the "critical level", (ii) the frequency localization of the threshold shifts, (iii) the actual influence of the protective reflexes of the ear, (iv) the existence of delayed threshold shifts following impulse noise exposures, and (v) the interest of the medical treatment of the acoustic trauma. Damage risk criteria for weapon noises are com

This paper describes a study investigating attitudes to noise as an occupational hazard. The objectives of the study were to understand the individual and organizational factors which affect attitudes towards noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) and to relate these to the standards of hearing conservation achieved in industry as demonstrated by compliance with the Noise at Work Regulations. The study comprised a survey of 48 organizations across Britain, and a more detailed examination of 10 of these as case studies. Methods used included desk research, audits of hearing conservation programmes,

A survey of vocational/technical schools in Massachusetts was performed to evaluate the prevalence of and need for hearing conservation programs. The surveys were sent to the superintendents or principals of all 27 regional schools in Massachusetts. Surveys consisted of questions in the areas of shop noise exposure, use of safety equipment, and hearing conservation education. Results indicate that (1) many teachers and students may be exposed to hazardous noise levels (2) hearing protection is not required in one-third of the schools and is used less frequently than other safety equipment, and

The affects of noise on the human inner ear have been well known for a long time, and measures to prevent occupational noise-induced hearing loss show a clear reduction in the statistics of morbidity. Nevertheless, there are working environments in which the use of ear protection seems to be inapplicable, because communication by speech is indispensable, for example in the cockpit of aircraft. Noise exposure measurements were performed on pilots of helicopters and propeller-machines of the German Federal Navy during realistic flight situations. The ambient noise levels during regular flight se

INTRODUCTION: Repeated blast exposures result in structural damage to the peripheral auditory system (PAS) and the central auditory system (CAS). However, it is difficult to differentiate injuries between two distinct pathways: the mechanical damage in the PAS caused by blast pressure waves transmitted through the ear and the damage in the CAS caused by blast wave impacts on the head or traumatic brain injury. This article reports a preliminary study using a 3D printed chinchilla "helmet" as a head protection device associated with the hearing protection devices (e.g., earplugs) to isolate the

INTRO: There were over 60 firefighter line of duty deaths and roughly 30,000 injuries in the United States in 2016. Modern thermoprotective gear has reduced the risks firefighters face from both thermal and inhalation injury, but must be used properly to be effective. The purpose of this study is to examine gear use and associated injury in firefighters.
METHODS: Surveys were distributed with questions about demographics, gear usage, and maintenance practices. If previously injured, firefighters described the injury, treatment, and recovery.
RESULTS: Of the 50 surveys distributed, 37 were re

According to the author it is the 'transmyringal' portion of the chorda tympani nerve which in practice remains exposed to the cold atmospheric air and triggers the pathologic process involved in Bell's palsy, affecting the facial nerve secondarily, rather than a primary condition of the facial nerve. This theory was proved by creating a Bell's palsy (paralysis a frigore) with cold-air-stimuli to the tympanic membrane in experimental animals (two monkeys). On the basis of this observation the author recommend's 'medical decompression' of the facial nerve by means of infra-red fomentation of th

For patients with profound hearing loss a cochlear implant (CI) is the only treatment today. The function of a CI depends in part of the function and survival of the remaining spiral ganglion neurons (SGN). It is well known from animal models that inner ear infusion of neurotrophic factors prevents SGN degeneration and maintains electrical responsiveness in deafened animals. The purpose with this study was to investigate the effects of a novel encapsulated cell (EC) device releasing neurotrophic factors in the deafened guinea pig. The results showed that an EC device releasing glial cell line-
