Maternal nutrition and socio-economic status as determinants of birthweight in chronically malnourished African women.

The birthweight is the most important determinant of mortality and morbidity in the neonatal period and may have an influence on health in adult life. The high rate of low birthweight in developing countries is therefore a major health problem. Maternal malnutrition is usually assumed to be a causal factor but other environmental factors are also involved. In this study we analysed maternal nutritional and socio-economic factors as determinants of birthweight in term infants from a rural African society characterised by a high rate of chronic malnutrition. Relations of maternal weight, gestati

Switching the histamine H2 receptor antagonist famotidine to nonprescription status in Canada. An economic evaluation.

The aim of this study was to compare the direct medical costs associated with the treatment of patients with heartburn/nonulcer dyspepsia under 2 scenarios: (i) no nonprescription histamine H2 receptor antagonist (H2RA) is available (the 'status quo scenario'); and (ii) the H2RA famotidine (at a daily dosage of 10mg) is available over-the-counter (OTC) at retail pharmacies (the 'OTC scenario'). We employed a decision analysis model over a 16-week period that considered direct medical costs from 2 alternative perspectives: (i) society, including the cost of self-medication borne by patients; an

Untangling choices: how awareness and socio-economic status shape malaria vaccination decisions among Ghanaian women.

Malaria remains a major public health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa, making effective vaccine uptake a priority. Although individual factors such as awareness, education, and place of residence are known to influence vaccination decisions, there is a gap in understanding how these socio-economic attributes interact with social context to shape choices under peer influence. This study addresses this gap by applying the Multi-Population Curie-Weiss Model, a statistical mechanics framework, to analyse binary vaccination decisions influenced jointly by private incentives and social interactions.

Multiple risk behaviour in adolescence and socio-economic status: findings from a UK birth cohort.

BACKGROUND: Patterns of risk behaviour during teenage years may vary by socio-economic status (SES). We aimed to examine possible associations between individual and multiple risk behaviours and three measures of SES in mid-adolescence. METHODS: The sample (n = 6406) comprised participants from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, a UK birth cohort. Thirteen risk behaviours spanning sexual health, substance use, self-harm, vehicle-related injury, criminality and physical inactivity were assessed in mid-adolescence (age 15-16 years). Associations between three measures of SES (

Mortality amongst European children with congenital anomalies: Associations with socio-economic status in the EUROLINKCAT cohort.

BACKGROUND: Childhood mortality is affected by major congenital anomalies and socio-economic status (SES). To our knowledge, their combined impact has not been explored to age 10. METHODS: We analysed the population-based EUROlinkCAT cohort to ascertain the impact of SES on mortality by ages 1 and 10 amongst children with congenital anomalies in ten congenital anomaly registers in seven European countries. Four countries defined SES according to maternal education, and two used their national index of multiple deprivation. The ten registers used a common script to generate data on survival by

Genetic correlates of socio-economic status influence the pattern of shared heritability across mental health traits.

Epidemiological studies show high comorbidity between different mental health problems, indicating that individuals with a diagnosis of one disorder are more likely to develop other mental health problems. Genetic studies reveal substantial sharing of genetic factors across mental health traits. However, mental health is also genetically correlated with socio-economic status (SES), and it is therefore important to investigate and disentangle the genetic relationship between mental health and SES. We used summary statistics from large genome-wide association studies (average N ~ 160,000) to est

Caesarean section rate in Nigeria between 2013 and 2018 by obstetric risk and socio-economic status.

OBJECTIVES: Caesarean section (CS) can be life-saving for both mother and child, but in Nigeria the CS rate remains low, at 2.7% of births. We aimed to estimate the rate of CS and early neonatal mortality in Nigeria according to obstetric risk and socio-economic background and to identify factors associated with CS. METHODS: We used the 2018 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey, encompassing 33 924 live births within the last 5 years, to estimate the CS rate and early neonatal mortality rate (ENMR) by obstetric risk group, informed by the Robson classification. The CS rate and ENMR were asse
