Evaluating Viral Pollution in Wastewater and Mediterranean Ecosystems.

Increasing water scarcity and climate-related extremes are amplifying the need for safe water reuse, however, wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) may not fully remove viral pathogens, posing potential risks to freshwater environments. This study assessed human enteric and respiratory viruses using (RT)-qPCR, along with faecal indicators using culture-based methods, at WWTPs in two Mediterranean protected areas (Albufera Natural Park and the Ebro River region) across three campaigns. A total of influent (n = 33), reclaimed wastewater (n = 33), biosolids (n = 32), surface water (n = 33), and sed

Understanding vulnerabilities and resilience in circular business ecosystems.

This study investigates the vulnerabilities that emerge in Circular Business Ecosystems (CBE) and their impact on ecosystem resilience. CBEs, characterized by collaborative networks of interdependent actors, are increasingly recognized as strategic approaches for achieving circular value propositions. However, these ecosystems are exposed to perturbations that can undermine their effectiveness and resilience. Drawing on a four-year qualitative, multiple-case study involving 19 firms across two distinct CBEs, this research adopts a vulnerability lens and socioecological and economic perspective

Improving the FAIRness and Sustainability of the NHGRI Resources Ecosystem.

In 2024, individuals funded by NHGRI to support genomic community resources completed a Self-Assessment Tool (SAT) to evaluate their application of the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) principles and assess their sustainability. By collecting insights from the self-administered questionnaires and conducting personal interviews, a valuable perspective was gained on the FAIRness and sustainability of the NHGRI resources. The results highlighted several challenges and key areas the NHGRI resource community could improve by working together to form recommendations to addres

Microbial interactions and ecology in fermented food ecosystems.

Fermented foods and beverages, produced by the intentional growth of microorganisms, have long been among the most widely consumed foods in the human diet. Whether microorganisms are added directly to food substrates, or the growth and activity of autochthonous microorganisms colonizing food substrates is encouraged by selective conditions, the production of organic acids, ethanol and other metabolic end products enhance the safety, shelf-life, sensory and functional properties of foods. Whereas some fermented foods may be produced by communities dominated by only a few taxa of limited phyloge

A phenotypic study of the resistome in a peri-urban ecosystem.

Since the discovery of antibiotics, the dispersion of resistance genes has increased exponentially, leading to the current state in which it has become increasingly difficult to achieve an effective treatment for infectious diseases. The enormous capacity for genetic exchange between microorganisms is causing resistance genes to be able to reach all environments, even those where there is no anthropogenic impact or exposure to these drugs. In this work, a phenotypic study of the resistome has been conducted in a peri-urban ecosystem (Granada, Spain), wherein the resistance to 32 antibiotics of

Contrasting emergence of Lyme disease across ecosystems.

Global environmental changes are causing Lyme disease to emerge in Europe. The life cycle of Ixodes ricinus, the tick vector of Lyme disease, involves an ontogenetic niche shift, from the larval and nymphal stages utilizing a wide range of hosts, picking up the pathogens causing Lyme disease from small vertebrates, to the adult stage depending on larger (non-transmission) hosts, typically deer. Because of this complexity the role of different host species for emergence of Lyme disease remains controversial. Here, by analysing long-term data on incidence in humans over a broad geographical scal

Snowmelt sources of methylmercury to high arctic ecosystems.

Mercury in humans and other top predators living in the Arctic is present at elevated levels. Since only methylmercury (MeHg) bioaccumulates in food chains, sources of MeHg need to be identified. Recently, wetlands in the High Arctic were found to produce MeHg, and this was confirmed in laboratory soil incubations. In the present study both wetlands and snowmelt water were evaluated as sources of MeHg to Arctic ecosystems in Nunavut. Three substudies took place on Cornwallis Island, and one took place on Ellesmere Island. First, the effect of wetland presence in lake watersheds was evaluated b

Desert ecosystems: similarities, characteristics, and health benefits.

Salty bodies of water in desert zones are known worldwide. The Salton Sea in California, USA, and the Dead Sea between Israel and Jordan are located in arid areas at approximately the same latitude, which might explain some similarities. Both the Salton and Dead Seas have ecosystems consisting of a singular saline sea/hot desert interface. The Salton Sea, the largest inland body of water in California, is a saline lake in the Coachella and Imperial Valleys. The Imperial Valley is one of the 10 top agricultural areas in the United States. Several thermoelectric plants exploiting geothermal well

[The place of ixodid ticks (Ixodidae) in forest ecosystems].

The ticks Ixodes ricinus and I. persulcatus are the dominant tick species in the forest ecosystems of the temporary zone of Eurasia. They occur within their areals in every types of forests except arid and marsh biotopes. The density of tick populations per square unit exceed many times those of dominant species of mammals and birds living in the same ecosystems. In optimal conditions the abundance of hungry larvae per 1 square km varies from hundreds of thousands to several millions, that of nymphs-from thousands to several hundreds of thousands, and that of imago counts several thousands. Consumer resilience suppresses the recovery of overgrazed ecosystems.

Many heterotroph species perish when faced with severe food limitation; others can persist, adapt, and thrive. Sea urchins are emblematic of this paradox: they can overgraze kelp forests to form barren habitats, but can then survive for decades in these nutritionally depauperate seascapes. Understanding the mechanisms enabling persistence under starvation and rapid recovery when food returns provides insights into how consumer resilience shapes ecosystem dynamics. We quantified how food abundance, quality, deprivation, and reintroduction influence bioenergetic performance in the red sea urchin

New Views on Cobalamin in Marine Microbial Ecosystems.

Cobalamin (vitamin B12) has long been recognized as a key cofactor required for phytoplankton growth and as a basis for ecological interactions between phytoplankton and bacteria in the sea. New findings, however, have revealed new functional roles of microbes in cobalamin production and use and illuminated a diversity of cobalamin-related compounds in the ocean. Recent studies have also made it clear that cobalamin limitation of primary productivity and phytoplankton growth is widespread, with seasonal and regional patterns, and that cobalamin can structure microbial interactions that form th

Toxicity assessment of microplastic (MPs); a threat to the ecosystem.

Plastic is now considered part and parcel of daily life due to its extensive usage. Microplastic (MP) pollution is becoming a growing worry and has been ranked as the second most critical scientific problem in the realm of ecology and the environment. Microplastics are smaller in size than the plastic and are more harmful to biotic and as well as abiotic environments. The toxicity of microplastic depends upon its shape and size and increases with an increase in its adsorption capacity and their toxicity. The reason behind their harmful nature is their small size and their large surface area-to

Cyanobacterial bioreporter of nitrate bioavailability in aquatic ecosystems.

The water eutrophication, resulting from the discharge of industrial and agricultural wastewater, leads to ecological degradation. However, to date, how to assess and manage the risks of water pollution, especially nitrogen pollution, remains a particularly noteworthy issue. Nitrate, the most important nitrogen compound, has become a bottleneck restricting total nitrogen management. The development of bioreporters monitoring nitrate pollution contributes to the estimation of water quality, especially the availability of nutrients. In this study, we obtained 9 bioreporters from 40 cyanobacteria

Altered cyclone-fire interactions are changing ecosystems.

Global change is altering interactions between ecological disturbances. We review interactions between tropical cyclones and fires that affect woody biomes in many islands and coastal areas. Cyclone-induced damage to trees can increase fuel loads on the ground and dryness in the understory, which increases the likelihood, intensity, and area of subsequent fires. In forest biomes, cyclone-fire interactions may initiate a grass-fire cycle and establish stable open-canopy biomes. In cyclone-prone regions, frequent cyclone-enhanced fires may generate and maintain stable open-canopy biomes (e.g., s

Diversity of trypanosomes in wildlife of the Kafue ecosystem, Zambia.

The Kafue ecosystem is a vast conservation protected area comprising the Kafue National Park (KNP) and the Game Management Areas (GMA) that act as a buffer around the national park. The KNP has been neglected as a potential foci for rhodesiense sleeping sickness despite the widespread presence of the tsetse vector and abundant wildlife reservoirs. The aim of this study was to generate information on circulating trypanosomes and their eminent threat/risk to public health and livestock production of a steadily growing human and livestock population surrounding the park. We detected various trypa

Controlling cyanobacterial harmful blooms in freshwater ecosystems.

Cyanobacteria's long evolutionary history has enabled them to adapt to geochemical and climatic changes, and more recent human and climatic modifications of aquatic ecosystems, including nutrient over-enrichment, hydrologic modifications, and global warming. Harmful (toxic, hypoxia-generating, food web altering) cyanobacterial bloom (CyanoHAB) genera are controlled by the synergistic effects of nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) supplies, light, temperature, water residence/flushing times, and biotic interactions. Accordingly, mitigation strategies are focused on manipulating these dynamic fac

Bacterial mercury resistance from atoms to ecosystems.

Bacterial resistance to inorganic and organic mercury compounds (HgR) is one of the most widely observed phenotypes in eubacteria. Loci conferring HgR in Gram-positive or Gram-negative bacteria typically have at minimum a mercuric reductase enzyme (MerA) that reduces reactive ionic Hg(II) to volatile, relatively inert, monoatomic Hg(0) vapor and a membrane-bound protein (MerT) for uptake of Hg(II) arranged in an operon under control of MerR, a novel metal-responsive regulator. Many HgR loci encode an additional enzyme, MerB, that degrades organomercurials by protonolysis, and one or more addit

Microflora in oral ecosystems in primary Sjögren's syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Knowledge of the effect of primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) on the microbial flora in the different predilection sites for oral disorders is needed for planning preventive treatment. We carried out microbial analysis of samples from the dorsum of the tongue, smooth mucosa, supragingival tooth surfaces, and the gingival crevice region of 20 patients with pSS. METHODS: A clinical oral examination was performed and whole unstimulated and stimulated secretion rates were measured. RESULTS: Compared with healthy controls, subjects with pSS harbored higher numbers and frequencies of Stre
