Occurrence, fate, behavior and ecotoxicological state of phthalates in different environmental matrices.

Because of their large and widespread application, phthalates or phthalic acid esters (PAEs) are ubiquitous in all the environmental compartements. They have been widely detected throughout the worldwide environment. Indoor air where people spend 65-90% of their time is also highly contaminated by various PAEs released from plastics, consumer products as well as ambient suspended particulate matter. Because of their widespread application, PAEs are the most common chemicals that humans are in contact with daily. Based on various exposure mechanisms, including the ingestion of food, drinking wa

Towards the Development of Microbial Ecotoxicology Testing Using Chlorpyrifos Contaminated Sediments and Marine Yeast Isolates as a Model.

Chlorpyrifos (CP), a widely used pesticide, and its metabolite 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol (3,5,6-TCP), are xenobiotic compounds detected in many biomes, notably in marine sediments, all over the world. These compounds are posing a serious environmental and health problem given their toxicity to wildlife and possible exposure effects to human neurodevelopment. Microorganisms at CP-impacted environments could harbor metabolic capabilities that can be used as indicators of the biological effects of the contaminant and could encode selected functions reactive against contaminants. Those features

Standardization of a Patella spp. (Mollusca, Gastropoda) embryo-larval bioassay and advantages of its use in marine ecotoxicology.

The use of three limpet species, Patella vulgata Linnaeus, 1758, Patella depressa Pennant, 1777 and Patella ulyssiponensis Gmelin, 1791 as model organisms in marine ecotoxicology has been evaluated. Initial laboratory experiments were aimed to standardize a biological test with embryos and larvae of Patella spp, establishing the percentage of normal trochophore larvae as endpoint. Before conducting in vitro fertilization, oocytes must be maturated artificially by incubation in an alkaline solution; therefore, alkalinizing agent, pH and time of eggs alkalinization were evaluated. Moreover, time

Developing behavioural ecotoxicology assessment methods in the tropical marine amphipod, Parhyale hawaiensis: A study with benzo[a]pyrene (BaP).

Toxicant-induced behavioural changes provide important insights into environmental toxicity, particularly in vulnerable tropical marine habitats. However, ecotoxicological knowledge of organisms in these environments is insufficient. We aimed to develop innovative and cost-effective ecotoxicology methods using Parhyale hawaiensis as a tropical model organism. Adult P. hawaiensis were exposed to aqueous benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) (2 μM) and dietary BaP (50, 250, or 1250 μg BaP/g diet). Survival (24 to 96 h) and behavioural responses (21d) to foraging, reproduction, and predator avoidance were studied

Ecological risk index integrating metal contamination and ecotoxicological data for estuarine sediments.

This study proposes an ecological risk index (EcoRI) for metal-contaminated sediments from tropical estuaries. The EcoRI is composed of two sub-indexes: (i) chemical risk (CR), whose estimation is based on the comparison with local threshold limits, the numerical ranking of enrichment factors (EF), classes of geoaccumulation index (IGEO) and metal toxicity factors taken from the literature; and (ii) ecotoxicological risk (ER), based on bioassays with ecologically relevant organisms and the weighting of their trophic position, type of exposure (acute or chronic) and type of endpoint. EcoRI was

QSAR-Based Ecotoxicological Assessment of Novel Imidazole Derivatives for Sustainable Crop Protection.

Imidazoles have been proven to be very effective pesticides, especially against phytopathogenic fungi and insects. Due to their negative effects on the environment, only a few imidazoles have been approved for use by the European Commission (EC). There is an urgent need to develop new imidazole derivatives with high efficiency and a wide spectrum of action against numerous pests that are, at the same time, safe for the environment and beneficial for organisms and humans. In order to reduce expensive and time-consuming experiments, an in silico approach based on quantitative structure-activity

Beyond insects: High sensitivity of the water fleas to insecticides and implications for ecotoxicological assessment.

Although many model species are widely used in toxicity testing, the sensitivity and ecological relevance of water fleas in the genus Simocephalus remain underexplored. We compiled acute toxicity data for Simocephalus, 73.1% involving insecticides, and compared their responses with those of other aquatic taxa. Simocephalus were generally more sensitive to insecticides than several major groups, including insects, their intended targets. Although they showed higher sensitivity than Daphnia magna, the differences from crustaceans overall were modest. Species sensitivity distributions for chlorpy

Multilevel ecotoxicological responses of Allium cepa to atrazine and glyphosate applied individually and in combination.

Glyphosate and atrazine are among the most extensively applied herbicides worldwide and are often detected together in aquatic environments due to their concurrent agricultural use. This study investigated their individual and combined effects on Allium cepa at environmentally realistic concentrations: 62.5-1000 µg L⁻¹ for glyphosate and 0.25-4 µg L⁻¹ for atrazine. Five mixtures were also tested: M1 (62.5 + 0.25), M2 (125 + 0.5), M3 (250 + 1), M4 (500 + 2), and M5 (1000 + 4). Multiple endpoints were analyzed, including germination, root elongation, mitotic index, chromosomal and mitotic abnorm

Heavy metal uptake, accumulation patterns, and ecotoxicological responses in terrestrial isopods: a review.

Soil heavy metal contamination poses persistent ecological risks to terrestrial ecosystems. Woodlice (Oniscidea), also known as terrestrial isopods, are important soil decomposers with strong capacities for heavy metal accumulation and detoxification. This review synthesizes current knowledge regarding heavy metal accumulation, distribution, physiological effects and ecological implications in woodlice. Heavy metals are predominantly accumulated in the hepatopancreas in woodlice, the principal organ for metal sequestration and detoxification. Copper generally exhibits higher bioconcentration f

Ecotoxicological Impacts of Heavy Metals on Medicinal Plant Quality and Rhizosphere Microbial Communities.

With the rapid expansion of industrial activities, the accumulation of heavy metals in the environment has become a serious threat to ecological security and public health. Rhizosphere microorganisms play a crucial role in supporting the growth and quality of medicinal plants by facilitating nutrient uptake and regulating hormonal balance. However, medicinal plants can absorb heavy metals from contaminated soils during growth, resulting in toxic metal accumulation in plant tissues and reduced efficacy of active compounds. At the same time, excessive heavy metal levels suppress rhizosphere micr

Mono and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in waterpipe wastewater: Level and ecotoxicological risk assessment.

Increasing of tobacco consumption around the world has led to the production of a large volume of waterpipe wastewater that enter the environment (e.g., coastal areas)and threaten aquatic creatures. However, until now, no research has been carried out on the amounts of monocyclic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in hookah wastewater. In the current study, the levels of PAHs and BTEX compounds in waterpipe wastewater resulting from the use of different tobacco brands were determined and their eco-toxicological effects were also evaluated. The mean levels of ƩPAHs in waterpipe wastewa

A review on emerging pharmaceutical residues in Ethiopia: occurrence, ecotoxicological aspects, and regulatory concerns.

BACKGROUND: Pharmaceuticals are expected to improve human and animal health, but improper management and regulation have led to adverse effects such as reproductive disorders, antibiotic resistance, and biodiversity loss in ecosystems. Their presence in the environment poses significant risks, including a reduction in biodiversity, reproductive issues, and the development of antimicrobial resistance. This review aims to examine the occurrence and sources of pharmaceuticals in the environment and their ecotoxicological and regulatory aspects, with a focus on Ethiopia. METHODS: A narrative revi

A global review on ecotoxicological studies concerning metal and metalloid contamination in Hammerhead Sharks.

Sharks, are highly vulnerable to fishing pressures, a key factor in their global population decline. Chemical pollution, however, especially metal and metalloid contamination, poses significant additional risks. Of around 520 shark species, about 170 are threatened, including the Sphyrna genus (hammerheads). This review examines contamination in these sharks and its ecological and human health implications. A scientometric review indicates limited research, mainly on juveniles and only mercury contamination, with scarce data on other metals, life stages, and consumption thresholds. The finding

Ecotoxicological screening of Kenyan tannery dust using a luminescent-based bacterial biosensor.

Ecotoxicological screening of dust sampled throughout a Kenyan tannery was conducted using a luminescence (lux)-based bacterial biosensor for both solid and liquid assays. This was complemented by chemical analysis in an attempt to identify possible causative toxic components. The biosensor results showed a highly significant (p < 0.001) difference in both solid and liquid phase toxicity in samples collected from various identified sampling points in the tannery. A positive correlation was observed between results of the solid and liquid phase techniques, for most of the sampling points indica

Ecotoxicological effects of cadmium on Echinometra mathaei: Oxidative stress, genotoxicity, and biochemical responses.

Cadmium (Cd), a non-essential heavy metal, poses a persistent threat to marine ecosystems. The edible sea urchin Echinometra mathaei, widely recognized as a sentinel species, was used to evaluate the effects of environmentally relevant Cd exposure. These organisms were exposed to 0, 0.01, and 0.1 mg L-1 Cd for 28 days, and gonadal tissues were analyzed for Ca content, oxidative stress biomarkers (H₂O₂, MDA, SOD, CAT), protein and carbohydrate reserves, and genotoxic endpoints (tail intensity, tail moment, tail factor). Cd accumulated progressively in gonads, coinciding with calcium depletion,

Pharmaceutical cocktails in aquatic ecosystems: unveiling the hidden ecotoxicological threats to Microcystis aeruginosa.

Pharmaceutical compounds (PhACs), continuously released into the environment, represent a growing ecotoxicological threat to aquatic ecosystems. While the toxicity of individual pharmaceuticals has been extensively investigated, the effects of complex mixtures, the so-called "cocktail effect", remain poorly understood, particularly for primary producers such as cyanobacteria. This study evaluates the individual and combined effects of four commonly detected pharmaceuticals in aquatic environments: acetaminophen (APAP), atenolol (ATN), carbamazepine (CBZ), and diazepam (DZP), using the model cy

Tunnel wash water in a cold climate: characteristics, ecotoxicological risk, and effect of sedimentation.

The characterization of tunnel wash water (TWW) from 12 Norwegian tunnels showed very high concentrations of total suspended solids (TSS), metals, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Iron (Fe), aluminum (Al), and manganese (Mn) were mainly particle-associated. They are efficiently removed by sedimentation, while the dissolved concentrations of toxic metals like Cu, Zn, and As did not change. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentration was higher in the dissolved than in the particulate fraction. Sedimentation treatment reduced the particulate share by about 50%. In contrast to
