The aim of the present study was to assess the resistance status of bovine gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) against ivermectin (IVM) and fenbendazole (FBZ) in Ecuador. The study involved five cattle farms located in different topographic zones of the country. Anthelmintic efficacy was assessed by calculating the percentage of fecal egg counts reduction (FECR) after treatment. Additionally, DNA from pooled larval cultures was screened to ascertain benzimidazole resistance alleles. For animals treated with IVM, FECR percentages ranged from 0 to 68%, indicating the presence of highly resistant w

Data on the prevalence of strongyloidiasis in Ecuador are patchy. The aim of this study was to document the presence of Strongyloides stercoralis infection in rural communities of different provinces of Ecuador. We tested 1,418 serum samples stored at the biobank of the Central University of Ecuador, Quito, with an ELISA test for Strongyloides. The samples had been collected in eight different provinces of Ecuador. Two hundred ninety-four samples (20.7%) were positive, and Jipijapa, Manabí Province, was the site with the largest proportion of positive samples (66.7%). Further surveys aimed at

AIM: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of Oestrus ovis in sheep meant for meat commercialization in the main slaughterhouse of the country.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between October 2015 and December 2015, we assessed the occurrence of Oestrus myiasis in the main slaughterhouse localized in Quito. In total, 80 sheep heads were randomly inspected and necropsied. Larvae were removed from nasal cavities and paranasal sinuses and cleaned. ANOVA (generalized linear model) was used to estimate the relationship between sex, age, and place of origin and presence or absence of parasite larvae.

We describe the cases of two patients with fever initially diagnosed as dengue and urinary tract infection. The patients were inmates of the same prison and were in contact with stagnant drinking water, which is considered to be the likely site of contamination, about 2 weeks before the onset of the symptoms during the carnival celebrations. The time between the hospital admission and suspected leptospirosis (and starting specific treatment) was four days for the patient in case 1 and two days for case 2; between admission and laboratory diagnostic confirmation was ten days for case 1 and four

OBJECTIVE: To describe maternal and fetal outcome among pregnancies complicated with malarial infection.
METHODS: Charts of pregnancies complicated with malarial infection were reviewed. Parasital etiology and maternal/fetal data was analyzed.
RESULTS: During the year 2001, at the Enrique C. Sotomayor Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, Guayaquil-Ecuador, 80 pregnancies complicated with malarial infection were admitted for treatment. This rendered an incidence of 2.1 per 1,000 live births (80/37,579). Mean maternal age was 25.2 +/- 6.7 years and the 19-29 age group was the most frequently af

Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is a common neurologic disorder in developing countries, where it may pose a major public health challenge. Recently, the disorder has become more commonly diagnosed in developed countries as a result of the influx of migrants from countries where the disease is endemic. The clinical syndrome associated with NCC includes neurologic, physical, and functional problems. Since the locus of the infection is mainly the central nervous system, there is a risk of neuropsychologic dysfunction. This study was conducted in Ecuador in a group of 123 subjects (49 males and 74 femal

Tropical medicine and parasitology : official organ of Deutsche Tropenmedizinische Gesellschaft and of Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ)1990eng
Man-biting rates and natural infection rates with filariae were determined for anthropophilic black flies in a preliminary survey during the wet and dry seasons at three localities, either hypoendemic or hyperendemic for onchocerciasis, in the Santiago onchocerciasis focus of Ecuador. Simulium exiguum was an efficient vector associated with hyperendemicity whereas S. quadrivittatum was thought only to sporadically transmit the parasite. Parasite transmission by these two species varied seasonally. Two other man-biting species, S. bipunctatum and S. escomeli, were discounted as vectors because

BACKGROUND: Leptospira are shed into the environment via urine of infected animals. Rivers are thought to be an important risk factor for transmission to humans, though much is unknown about the types of environment or characteristics that favor survival. To address this, we screened for Leptospira DNA in two rivers in rural Ecuador where Leptospirosis is endemic.
RESULTS: We collected 112 longitudinal samples and recorded pH, temperature, river depth, precipitation, and dissolved oxygen. We also performed a series of three experiments designed to provide insight into Leptospira presence in t

We report the first identification in Ecuador of the microorganism Comamonas kerstersii, a strain isolates from a sample of fluid from the abdominal cavity and identified by the technique of mass spectrometry MALDITOF. It was obtained during the surgical act of a patient with the diagnosis of acute peritonitis, secondary to a perforated appendicitis. This microorganism is considered a rare pathogen. Even though the genus to which it belongs has a wide geographical distribution, this pathogen is considered an opportunistic agent.

OBJECTIVE: Rapid development in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) has led to changes in diet that have outpaced water and sanitation improvements, contributing to a dual burden of overweight and noncommunicable disease risk factors (OWT/NCD) and undernutrition and infectious disease symptoms (UND/ID) within individuals and households. Yet, little work has examined the joint impact of water and food exposures on the development of the dual burden.
METHODS: We use data from Ecuador's nationally representative Encuesta Nacional de Salud y Nutrición (ENSANUT-ECU) to test whether water acces

OBJECTIVES: While the link between childhood experiences of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse and mental health problems has been largely studied, there is limited information regarding the prevalence of child maltreatment in developing countries, particularly in South America. The present study is an effort to investigate the prevalence of child maltreatment in Ecuador using the ISPCAN Child Abuse Screening Tool Retrospective version (ICAST-R).
METHOD: A student sample (males = 1579; females = 1554) from the seven largest universities in Quito, Ecuador, completed the ICAST-R.

BACKGROUND: The Esmeraldas focus of onchocerciasis in Ecuador expanded geographically during the 1980s and was associated with severe ocular and skin disease. Mass drug administration (MDA) with ivermectin started in 1991, initially once but later twice a year, in the principle endemic focus followed by all satellite foci. Treatment was stopped in 2009 when entomological assessments determined that transmission of Onchocerca volvulus had been interrupted.
METHODS: Three years after the cessation of ivermectin treatment in 2012, as defined by the WHO guidelines for onchocerciasis elimination,

In the national consciousness, Ecuador is a mestizo nation. However, it is also an ethnically diverse nation with sizable minorities of indigenous and Afrodescended peoples. In national surveys, there is also a considerable minority who self-identify as blanco (white). Although there is strong evidence of continuing discrimination and prejudice toward both indigenous and Afro-descended peoples, there is little public discussion or political action addressing such issues. The emergence of a powerful and resilient indigenous movement in the late 1980s gained international interest and acclaim in

Wound botulism results from colonization of a contaminated wound by Clostridium botulinum and the anaerobic in situ production of a potent neurotoxin. Between 1943, when wound botulism was first recognized, and 1990, 47 laboratory-confirmed cases, mostly trauma-associated, were reported in the United States. Since 1990, wound botulism associated with injection drug use emerged as the leading cause of wound botulism in the United States; 210 of 217 cases reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention between 1990 and 2002 were associated with drug injection.
