A scoping review to explore how universal design for learning is described and implemented by rehabilitation health professionals in school settings.

BACKGROUND: Universal design for learning (UDL) is a framework that provides guidelines to support children with diverse needs in the classroom and promotes inclusion of all children. Although UDL is recognized as a promising approach for school-based rehabilitation health professionals (RHPs), there are no studies that synthesize evidence on the use of UDL by RHPs in the school setting. Therefore, the research question for this study is: How is UDL described and implemented in school settings by RHPs? This study specifically examined literature from occupational therapy, physiotherapy, and sp

Indonesian teachers' epistemological beliefs and inclusive education.

A growing number of children with intellectual disabilities attend inclusive schools in Indonesia. Previous research has suggested that teachers' type of school and experience influences their beliefs about inclusive education. This research collected questionnaire data from 267 Indonesian teachers and compared the responses from those working in inclusive, special and regular schools regarding their epistemological and pedagogical beliefs. The results showed that teachers in inclusive schools expressed stronger social constructivist beliefs than those in other schools. However, it was teacher

Effectiveness of video displays versus traditional flashcards for global word learning in students with moderate-severe cognitive disabilities.

Literacy is crucial for developing communication competence in students with complex communication needs (CCN). Existing technologies often inadequately support literacy strategies for these children. Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) is a promising approach, and video visual scene display (VVSD) has emerged as a motivational feature for AAC intervention. This study examined the effectiveness of Smart-Glove, which combines VVSD and flashcards to teach global words to Hebrew-speaking students with moderate-severe intellectual disabilities (ID) and CCN. Using an adapted alternatin

The effects of self-directed learning based on video prompting in improving 27 daily living skills for adolescents with mild intellectual disability in China.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Students with intellectual disability often face challenges in mastering daily living skills. Existing intervention strategies for these skills typically require support from instructors, which limits the autonomy and independence of these students. Consequently, this study aims to develop a self-directed learning approach based on video prompting to enhance the daily living skills of students with mild intellectual disability. METHOD: The research employed a multiple probe across behaviors design to evaluate the effectiveness of this approach among three adolescents with mil

Using independence training to teach independent living skills to children and young men with visual impairments.

Two groups of students with visual impairments were taught various independent living skills. Of the 7 students, 5 also had a diagnosis of mental retardation. One group (3 first graders) was taught the tasks of folding a shirt, making an emergency telephone call, and spreading soft foods with a knife. The other group (4 young men) was taught to increase leisure skills through three different leather-work tasks. Independence training was conducted in a group format and included social learning components (e.g., self-evaluation, peer evaluation and reinforcement) in addition to traditional opera

Direct and generalized effects of food satiation in reducing rumination.

The effects of food satiation on rumination and a collateral self-stimulatory behavior were examined in three profoundly retarded individuals. For all three individuals, the provision of unlimited quantities of cereal and milk during mealtime resulted in reductions in rumination. Decreases were also seen in collateral behaviors for all three subjects, although these responses were not specifically treated. Rumination and self-stimulation increased during a withdrawal condition for the three individuals, with experimental control being regained once the satiation procedure was re-instituted. Fa

Increasing oral reading proficiency through overcorrection and phonic analysis.

The comparative efficacy of overcorrection, phonic analysis, and no-intervention control condition in an alternating treatments design on the number of oral reading errors made by 3 children with moderate mental retardation was evaluated. During overcorrection each oral reading error resulted in the teacher providing the correct word and the child pointing to and saying the word correctly five times before rereading the sentence in which the error word occurred. During phonic analysis, the teacher directed the child to attend to various phonetic elements of the error word and to "sound out" th

Using stimulus shaping and fading to establish stimulus control in normal and retarded children.

The present study was an effort to investigate whether, in addition to his IQ level, the child's ability to identify all relevant stimulus components would affect the frequency of overselective responding. Children of different IQ levels (i.e. normal, educably retarded, and trainable retarded children) participated. Subjects were trained to learn the meanings of four sets of fictitious words, i.e. two sets containing words printed in Roman letters (Roman words), and two sets containing words printed in Hebrew letters (Hebrew words). All subjects could identify the words of each set. The normal

Effects of distinctive-feature training and instructional technique on letter and form discrimination.

Techniques for facilitating alphabet letter discrimination were investigated within the framework of distinctive feature and attention theory. To compare the effectiveness of three instructional procedures for emphasizing distinctive features, experimenters gave separate groups of children either distinctive-feature training, high-lighting of the features, or distinctive-feature training plus fading-in of the letter forms, along with a control, for each of three dimensions. The horizontal-slant, open-close, and straight-curve dimensions were chosen for study. Training effects were assessed by

"The System Sweeps it Under the Rug": Educational Staff's Perspectives on Romantic Relationships Among Autistic Adolescents.

Article 23 of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) calls to recognize the right of people with disabilities to have romantic relationships, marry and raise children. However, to date, research has mainly focused on this issue in relation to people with physical or intellectual disabilities. Less is known about romantic relationships among autistic adolescents and how others in their immediate environment, such as educational staff, perceive and refer to this issue. To address this gap, the present study aimed to understand and describe the perspectives of educationa

Examination of the communication interface between students with severe to profound and multiple intellectual disability and educational staff during structured teaching sessions.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with severe to profound and multiple intellectual disability (S-PMID) tend to function at the earlier stages of communication development. Variable and highly individual means of communicating may present challenges to the adults providing support in everyday life. The current study aimed to examine the communication interface between students with S-PMID and educational staff. METHOD: An in-depth, observational study of dyadic interaction in a class within the secondary part of a special school was conducted. The designated educational level was Key Stage 3 under the

Learning to Apply Algebra in the Community for Adults With Intellectual Developmental Disabilities.

Students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are routinely excluded from algebra and other high-level mathematics courses. High school students with IDD take courses in arithmetic and life skills rather than having an opportunity to learn algebra. Yet algebra skills can support the learning of money and budgeting skills. This study explores the feasibility of algebra instruction for adults with IDD through an experimental curriculum. Ten individuals with IDD participated in a 6-week course framing mathematics concepts within the context of everyday challenges in handling mon
