Afferent and efferent connections of the nucleus sphericus in the snake Thamnophis sirtalis: convergence of olfactory and vomeronasal information in the lateral cortex and the amygdala.

This paper is an account of the afferent and efferent projections of the nucleus sphericus (NS), which is the major secondary vomeronasal structure in the brain of the snake Thamnophis sirtalis. There are four major efferent pathways from the NS: 1) a bilateral projection that courses, surrounding the accessory olfactory tract, and innervates several amygdaloid nuclei (nucleus of the accessory olfactory tract, dorsolateral amygdala, external amygdala, and ventral anterior amygdala), the rostral parts of the dorsal and lateral cortices, and the accessory olfactory bulb; 2) a bilateral projectio

Afferent and efferent connections of the nucleus prethalamicus in the yellowfin goby Acanthogobius flavimanus.

The nucleus prethalamicus (PTh) receives fibers from the optic tectum and then projects to the dorsal telencephalon in the yellowfin goby Acanthogobius flavimanus. However, it remained unclear whether the PTh is a visual relay nucleus, because the optic tectum receives not only visual but also other sensory modalities. Furthermore, precise telencephalic regions receiving prethalamic input remained unknown in the goby. We therefore investigated the full set of afferent and efferent connections of the PTh by direct tracer injections into the nucleus. Injections into the PTh labeled cells in the

[The effect of chronic ototoxicity of gentamicin on the function of auditory efferents].

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of chronic ototoxicity of gentamicin on the function of the cochlea and auditory efferents. METHOD: The effect of chronic ototoxicity of gentamicin on the function of the cochlea was determined by recording thresholds of the compound action potentials (CAP) of the auditory nerves to tone pip at 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 kHz. The function of the medial olivocochlear (MOC) system was determined, through the observation of the effect of the contralateral noise (CLN) on CAP, before and after gentamicin administration. RESULT: The suppression effects of CLN on CAP were irr

Brainstem viscerotopic organization of afferents and efferents involved in the control of swallowing.

Cholera toxin horseradish peroxidase (CT-HRP), a sensitive antegrade and retrograde tracer, is effective at labeling swallowing motoneurons and their dendritic fields within the nucleus ambiguus (NA), nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS), dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve, and hypoglossal nucleus. Using this tracer to label motoneurons within the NTS demonstrates that palatal, pharyngeal, and laryngeal afferents overlap considerably within the interstitial and intermediate subnuclei. These afferents have a pattern of distribution within the NTS similar to the labeling observed after appli

[Lymphatic drainage of intertracheobronchial lymph nodes. An anatomical study by injecting diaphragmatic pleura of foetuses and adult cadavers].

The aim of this anatomical study was to determine lymphatic efferents from intertracheobronchial lymph nodes. The diaphragmatic vessels of 57 adult cadavers and 23 foetuses were injected with a modified Gerota's medium to permit, through diaphragmatic lymphatic efferents, intertracheobronchial lymph nodes and its lymphatic efferents to be visualised and then dissected. Each stage of the dissection was described and photographed. Ascending paratracheal efferents appeared to be the most important, particularly the right one. Unknown lymph pathways such as the right thoracic tracheo-oesophageal l

The identification of neuronal control pathways supplying effector tissues in the stomach.

The stomach acts as a buffer between the ingestion of food and its processing in the small intestine. It signals to the brain to modulate food intake and it in turn regulates the passage of a nutrient-rich fluid, containing partly digested food, into the duodenum. These processes need to be finely controlled, for example to restrict reflux into the esophagus and to transfer digesta to the duodenum at an appropriate rate. Thus, the efferent pathways that control gastric volume, gastric peristalsis and digestive juice production are critically important. We review these pathways with an emphasis

Unilateral hearing losses alter loud sound-induced temporary threshold shifts and efferent effects in the normal-hearing ear.

In animals with bilaterally normal hearing, olivocochlear pathways can protect the cochlea from the temporary shifts in hearing sensitivity (temporary threshold shifts; TTSs) caused by short-duration intense loud sounds. The crossed olivocochlear pathway provides protection during binaural loud sound, and uncrossed pathways protect when monaural or binaural loud sounds occur in noise backgrounds. Here I demonstrate that when there is a chronic unilateral hearing loss, effects of loud sounds, and efferent effects on loud sound, in the normal-hearing ear differ markedly from normal. Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue in human efferent tear ducts.

The recent description of primary marginal zone lymphomas in human efferent tear ducts with typical features of lymphomas arising in mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) infers the presence of MALT in the human efferent tear ducts. To date, studies have not established clearly whether organised MALT occurs in normal human efferent tear ducts. To elucidate this problem, efferent lacrimal pathways from unselected body donors with unknown prior history of efferent tear duct, ocular, or nasal disease were examined for the presence of organised MALT. Organised lymphoid tissue was found with the

Efferent and afferent connections of the ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus determined by neural tracer analysis: implications for lordosis regulation in female rats.

Neural connections of the ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus (VMN) to and from forebrain and midbrain structures, which are involved in the neuroendocrine regulation of reproduction, were investigated. A retrograde (fluoro-gold [FG]) or an anterograde neural tracer (phaseolus vulgaris-leucoagglutinin [PHA-L]) was injected into the left side of the VMN in ovariectomized rats. Six days after injection with FG or 11 days after injection with PHA-L, brains were fixed and sectioned. After immunohistochemistry, digital images of FG-labeled neural cell bodies (FG-cells) or PHA-L-labeled fibers (PHA-L-

Neurophysiological assessment of breathing is mandatory for the diagnosis and management of respiratory problems occurring in neuromuscular disorders (neuromuscular complications of critical illness, spinal cord trauma, C4-C5 radiculopathies, phrenic nerve neuropathy, diabetes mellitus, Guillain-Barré syndrome etc...). We review the methods of exploration (principles and normative data) of efferent pathways (phrenic nerve conduction, central motor conduction studies with transcranial magnetic stimulation, diaphragmatic EMG) and afferent pathways (somatosensory evoked potentials of the phrenic

Two types of actions of norepinephrine on identified auditory efferent neurons in rat brain stem slices.

Whole cell voltage-clamp recordings were performed on auditory olivocochlear neurons in the ventral nucleus of the trapezoid body (VNTB) of brain stem slices from neonatal rats. Each neuron was identified by retrograde labeling with Fast Blue injected into the cochlea. Bath application of norepinephrine (NE; 1-10 microM) reversibly induced an inward current in 26 of 38 labeled neurons that were voltage clamped at -75 mV. This was responsible for the membrane depolarization to NE observed in current-clamp mode. The NE-induced inward current appeared to be more prominent at -55 mV than at -75 mV

Intravesical therapy for overactive bladder.

Overactive bladder and urgency incontinence are common conditions generally treated with oral anticholinergic therapy. Despite the development of new antimuscarinic agents, many patients do not tolerate or fail to respond to oral therapy. Intravesical instillation therapy can provide an alternative method of managing bladder overactivity. Intravesical instillation of anticholinergics such as oxybutynin and atropine can achieve cholinergic blockade without producing systemic side effects. Neurally mediated syncopal syndromes: pathophysiological concepts and clinical evaluation.

The neurally mediated syncopal syndromes encompass a number of apparently related disturbances of reflex cardiovascular control characterized by transient inappropriate bradycardia and/or vasodilation of various arterial and venous beds. Certain of these syndromes (e.g., carotid sinus syndrome, postmicturition syncope) are encountered occasionally in clinical practice, whereas others are quite rare (e.g., swallow syncope). On the other hand, vasovagal syncope occurs so frequently, that as a group, the neurally mediated syncopal syndromes are among the most important causes of syncope. The path

The distribution of the cat's carotid sinus nerve afferent and efferent cell bodies using the horseradish peroxidase technique.

The location of both afferent and efferent carotid sinus nerve (CSN) cell bodies in the cat has been determined using the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) technique. Following a limited exposure of the central cut end of the CSN to HRP, labeled sensory ganglion cells were found in both the petrosal and superior ganglia of the IXth cranial nerve. An average of 387 in the former and 16 cells in the latter ganglion were labeled. Retrogradely labeled neurons were found only within the ipsilateral medulla. These cells were both round and spindle shaped and had an average somal diameter of 19 micrometer

[The inflammatory reflex: the role of the vagus nerve in regulation of immune functions].

Experimental studies published in past years have shown an important role of the vagus nerve in regulating immune functions. Afferent pathways of this cranial nerve transmit signals related to tissue damage and immune reactions to the brain stem. After central processing of these signals, activated efferent vagal pathways modulate inflammatory reactions through inhibiting the synthesis and secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines by immune cells. Therefore, pathways localized in the vagus nerve constitute the afferent and efferent arms of the so-called "inflammatory reflex" that participates in

Functional Interplay Between the Putative Measures of Rostral and Caudal Efferent Regulation of Speech Perception in Noise.

Efferent modulation has been demonstrated to be very important for speech perception, especially in the presence of noise. We examined the functional relationship between two efferent systems: the rostral and caudal efferent pathways and their individual influences on speech perception in noise. Earlier studies have shown that these two efferent mechanisms were correlated with speech perception in noise. However, previously, these mechanisms were studied in isolation, and their functional relationship with each other was not investigated. We used a correlational design to study the relationshi

Multimodal efferent and recurrent neurons in the medial lobes of cockroach mushroom bodies.

Previous electrophysiological studies of cockroach mushroom bodies demonstrated the sensitivity of efferent neurons to multimodal stimuli. The present account describes the morphology and physiology of several types of efferent neurons with dendrites in the medial lobes. In general, efferent neurons respond to a variety of modalities in a context-specific manner, responding to specific combinations or specific sequences of multimodal stimuli. Efferent neurons that show endogenous activity have dendritic specializations that extend to laminae of Kenyon cell axons equipped with many synaptic ves
