Schistosoma mansoni cercarial host location and infection under simulated natural conditions in Egypt.

This study was performed in water ditches under simulated natural conditions in Egypt to elucidate the effect of various environmental factors on Schistosoma mansoni cercarial host location and infection of the definitive host (using albino mice). Evaluation of these factors was dependent on both infection rate of exposed mice as well as the schistosome worm load under the same experimental conditions. The seasonal water temperature proved to be a very important factor and this was proven by the infection rate of mice and the worm load recovered were lower in January and April (16 degrees C an

Ensemble modeling of aquatic plant invasions and economic cost analysis in China under climate change scenarios.

Pistia stratiotes, Eichhornia crassipes, Alternanthera philoxeroides, and Cabomba caroliniana are officially recognized as invasive aquatic plants in China. Accurately predicting their invasion dynamics under climate change is crucial for the future safety of aquatic ecosystems. Compared to single prediction models, ensemble models that integrate multiple algorithms provide more accurate forecasts. However, there has been a notable lack of research utilizing ensemble models to collectively predict the invasive regions of these four species in China. To address this gap, we collected and analyz

Fungal aerosols in rabbit breeding environment: Metagenetic insight into PM2.5 based on third-generation sequencing technology.

Fungal aerosols are a vital environmental hazard factor impeding the development of the rabbit breeding industry and threatening public health. This study aimed to determine fungal abundance, diversity, composition, diffusion, and variability in aerosols in rabbit breeding environments. Twenty PM2.5 filter samples were collected from five sampling sites (i.e. En5, In, Ex5, Ex15, and Ex45) in a modern rabbit farm in Linyi City, China. Fungal component diversity at the species level was analyzed in all samples using third-generation sequencing technology. Results revealed that fungal diversity a

Detection and monitoring of water hyacinth in large lakes of five Indian urban agglomerates using Sentinel-2 and machine learning models.

Rapid urbanisation has intensified ecological pressures on urban lakes, promoting the spread of invasive aquatic macrophytes such as water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes). This study presents a multi-year, satellite-based framework for detecting and monitoring water hyacinth in urban lakes using Sentinel-2 multispectral imagery and supervised machine learning. Four classifiers (Support Vector Machine, XGBoost, Random Forest, and K-Nearest Neighbours) were evaluated using classification-based accuracy metrics, including accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, Cohen's kappa, and cross-validation

Phosphate reclaim from simulated and real eutrophic water by magnetic biochar derived from water hyacinth.

In this study, the efficiency and mechanism of aqueous phosphate removal by magnetic biochar derived from water hyacinth (MW) were investigated. The MW pyrolyzed at 450 °C (MW450) exhibited the most prominent phosphate sorption capacity, which was estimated to be 5.07 mg g-1 based on Langmuir-Freundlich model. At an initial phosphorus (P) concentration of 1 mg l-1, >90% P removal was achieved over pH 3-9, but the efficiency decreased sharply at pH > 10. The presence of arsenate and carbonate could remarkably decrease P sorption, while the inhibition effects of antimonate, nitrate and sulfate w

Environmental and human facets of the waterweed proliferation in a Vast Tropical Ramsar Wetland-Vembanad Lake System.

The Vembanad Lake and its associated low-lying areas and network of canals (hereafter VBL) form the major part of India's second-largest Ramsar wetland (1512 km2) located in Kerala State along India's southwest coast. The extensive VBL has a large fishery, inland waterways, and popular tourist attractions that support the livelihoods of thousands of people. Over the last several decades, the proliferation of water weeds in the VBL has alarmingly increased, causing many adverse ecological and socioeconomic effects. This study based on a review and synthesis of long-term data introduced the envi

Genome-Guided Analysis of Seven Weed Species Reveals Conserved Sequence and Structural Features of Key Gene Targets for Herbicide Development.

Herbicides are commonly deployed as the front-line treatment to control infestations of weeds in native ecosystems and among crop plants in agriculture. However, the prevalence of herbicide resistance in many species is a major global challenge. The specificity and effectiveness of herbicides acting on diverse weed species are tightly linked to targeted proteins. The conservation and variance at these sites among different weed species remain largely unexplored. Using novel genome data in a genome-guided approach, 12 common herbicide-target genes and their coded proteins were identified from s

Invasion biology meets parasitology: a case study of parasite spill-back with Egyptian Fasciola gigantica in the invasive snail Pseudosuccinea columella.

The liver fluke Fasciola gigantica is a trematode parasite of ruminants and humans that occurs naturally in Africa and Asia. Cases of human fascioliasis, attributable at least in part to F. gigantica, are significantly increasing in the last decades. The introduced snail species Galba truncatula was already identified to be an important intermediate host for this parasite and the efficient invader Pseudosuccinea columella is another suspect in this case. Therefore, we investigated snails collected in irrigation canals in Fayoum governorate in Egypt for prevalence of trematodes with focus on P.

Green magnetically separable molluscicide Ba-Ce-Cu ferrite/TiO2 nanocomposite for controlling terrestrial gastropods Monacha Cartusiana.

The increasing economic damage caused by terrestrial gastropods, especially the Monacha cartusiana (M. cartusiana) land snail, to the agricultural sector requires a diligent and continuous search for new materials and alternatives for the control operations. In this piece of work, a magnetically separable molluscicide with high effectiveness green Barium-Cerium-Copper ferrite/TiO2 (Ba-Ce-CuFO/TiO2) nanocomposite was greenly prepared using Eichhornia plant aqueous extract and characterized using different techniques. The green Ba-Ce-CuFO/TiO2 nanocomposite was applied as an aspect of the attemp

Hydrophyte root microbiome: a novel reservoir of plant growth-promoting bacteria for enhancing lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) growth and nutritional quality under soilless cultivation.

Soilless cultivation is a major component of modern protected agriculture; however, often lack the beneficial microbial communities that support plant health in natural soils. This study explored hydrophyte root microbiomes as an eco-friendly and novel source of plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) for engineering beneficial microbial communities in soilless systems. Bacteria associated with the roots of Eichhornia crassipes, Pistia stratiotes, and Alternanthera philoxeroides, expressing PGP traits were assessed for their growth-promoting potential on lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. cv. Thermal pretreatment of water hyacinth: a sustainable route for bioethanol and biomethanol production.

An invasive aquatic macrophyte characterized by elevated lignocellulosic content and rapid propagation, water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), serves as a feasible and sustainable biofuel resource. The extensive presence, affordability, and ecological detriment of this aquatic plant in freshwater ecosystems render its biofuel generation both economically and ecologically feasible, transforming waste biomass into a sustainable energy source. This study explored green pretreatment using petha wastewater alongside thermal co-pretreatment to augment biofuel generation from water hyacinth stems thr

Distribution of Biomphalaria Snails in Associated Vegetations and Schistosome Infection Prevalence Along the Shores of Lake Victoria in Mbita, Kenya: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis due to Schistosoma mansoni remains a major public health problem and cause of morbidity and mortality in sub-Saharan Africa despite the implementation of control programmes. More than 6 million Kenyans are at risk of infection. Regarding control measures, Biomphalaria snail species, which are the obligatory intermediate hosts for transmission of S. mansoni, have been neglected. Mbita subcounty in Homa Bay County, western Kenya, along Lake Victoria basin, has a high prevalence of S. mansoni infection despite mass drug administration. This study aimed to determine the

Mercury net methylation in five tropical flood plain regions of Brazil: high in the root zone of floating macrophyte mats but low in surface sediments and flooded soils.

In aquatic systems, bottom sediments have often been considered as the main methylmercury (MeHg) production site. In tropical floodplain areas, however, floating meadows and flooded forests extend over large areas and can be important Hg methylating sites. We present here a cross-system comparison of the Hg net methylation capacity in surface sediments, flooded soils and roots of floating aquatic macrophytes, assayed by in situ incubation with 203Hg and extraction of formed Me203 Hg by acid leaching and toluene. The presence of mono-MeHg was confirmed by thin layer chromatography and other tec
