[Aseptic necroses and osteochondrosis dissecans of the elbow joint].

In our opinion, complete (Panner's disease) and incomplete (osteochondrosis dissecans; OD) necrosis of the elbow epiphysis form a nosologic unit. A review of the localization, pathogenetic hypotheses, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of aseptic necrosis and OD of the elbow is presented with reference to the older and, especially, the current literature. In contrast to the procedures reported in the literature, we performed subchondral focus drilling in 10 patients over 10 years of age suffering from Panner's disease, with good functional results. Operative therapy was performed on 50 elbow af

[Surgical treatment of the elbow joint in chronic polyarthritis].

Compared to the frequency of manifestation of rheumatoid arthritis in the elbow joint the quota of surgical intervention in this area is low. In most cases pain and disability are only moderate, especially if the reduced range of motion is compensated by maintained function of the equilateral shoulder and wrist joint. Surgical treatment is indicated if instability increases, the independency of the patients in daily life is endangered and inflammation increases acutely. A persistent compression of n. ulnaris has to be operated as soon as possible. Often the preferred early synovectomy is impos

REVIEW OF ARTICULATED ELBOW ORTHOTICS FOR JOINT STIFFNESS REHABILITATION.

UNLABELLED: Joint stiffness is the most common complication in elbow injuries, presenting several etiologies and pathophysiological mechanisms that hinder treatment and prognosis. Prevention and treatment of joint contracture depend on the cause of stiffness, and early intervention should modify its outcomes. The methods used may be conservative or surgical, alone or in combination, according to each individual situation. OBJECTIVE: Review articles on articulated elbow orthosis for joint stiffness rehabilitation. METHODS: A literature review was conducted in journals available at the PubMed,

Unique indications for internal joint stabilizer for elbow instability.

BACKGROUND: Treatment of elbow instability remains challenging despite advancements in surgical techniques. The objective of this study was to evaluate obesity, advanced age or frailty, and altered cognitive function (because of mental handicap, stroke, dementia, or traumatic brain injury) as unique indications for the use of the internal joint stabilizer (IJS) to augment surgical treatment of elbow instability. METHODS: This was a retrospective review of all patients 18 years and older with elbow instability who were managed with an IJS along with standard measures of care for their specific

Elbow joint luxation in a 1-month-old foal.

This paper reports on luxation of the elbow joint without concomitant fracture in a 1-month-old foal. Conservative treatment, with closed reduction and full-limb bandaging, including caudal and lateral splints, seemed successful initially, however, failed to provide enough stability and luxation recurred, and open reduction and surgical placement of prosthetic collateral ligaments was required. Luxation of the elbow joint should be considered when acute non-weight bearing forelimb lameness occurs associated with pain and swelling in the area of the elbow in young foals. Closed reduction failed

Total elbow joint arthroplasty in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

As a result of better patient selection, implant design, and surgical technique, the long-term results of total elbow arthroplasty in patients with rheumatoid arthritis has improved significantly over the past 10 years. The semiconstrained hinge implant is used in the presence of severe bone and ligament destruction. The non-constrained surface replacement requires intact bone and ligamentous supports. Best results are obtained if surgery is undertaken before severe soft tissue contractures, muscle atrophy, and neurologic disability of the involved extremity develop.

Symptomatic, lateral synovial fringe (plica) of the elbow joint.

A series of patients with elbow symptoms suggesting intraarticular loose body(s) is presented. The symptoms included aching, stiffness, intermittent loss of motion, and catching. The clinical picture was seen in individuals without significant antecedent trauma. Arthroscopy in each case failed to demonstrate the anticipated loose body but did demonstrate a fibrotic synovial fringe that impinged between the radial head and the capitellum on repetitious elbow flexion and extension, particularly with the forearm in pronation. Arthroscopic excision of the fringe led to prompt recovery.

The internal joint stabilizer for elbow instability: current concepts.

The management of residual elbow instability is challenging in both acute and chronic injuries. Among the available devices, the hinged external fixator provides an additional joint stabilization while allowing an early motion, but it is clumsy and associated to high rate of pin track complications. To address these issues, an internal joint stabilizer (IJS) has been recently developed. An easier recreation of the axis of rotation coupled to the reduced lever arm of the hinge is the root of the consistent and satisfactory results thus far observed. In addition, the device is more comfortable f

Stent Grafts Across the Elbow Joint for Access Salvage.

PURPOSE: Covered stent grafts (SGs) are currently being used in a wide variety of situations to maintain function and patency of hemodialysis access circuits. Stent grafts are rarely placed across the elbow joint (EJ), however, due to fear of stent fracture. This study reports on the experience and patency rates with SGs across the EJ. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From April 2020 to August 2023, all procedures with SGs placed across the EJ were retrospectively analyzed. A total of 21 patients with SGs placed across the EJ were included in the study. The Covera Vascular Covered Stent (BD, Franklin L

Management of Periprosthetic Joint Infection in Total Elbow Arthroplasty.

Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a potentially devastating complication after total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) that can lead to significant morbidity for the patient as well as increased health care-related costs. Despite the potential morbidity associated with TEA PJI, evidence is limited regarding an optimal treatment algorithm. Initial management typically consists of either irrigation and debridement or 2-stage revision. A stable implant, a functioning triceps, and an intact soft tissue envelope are necessary to perform irrigation and debridement. Irrigation and debridement is associa

Distal radioulnar joint dislocation in association with elbow injuries.

Traumatic distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) dislocation with or without an associated fracture is a rare injury. When coupled with a radial head fracture this is commonly known as the Essex-Lopresti injury. We report two cases of elbow dislocation with ipsilateral radial neck fractures and associated true DRUJ dislocations. This has not been previously described in the literature. In elbow injuries with wrist involvement, symptoms in the latter may be subtle. Due to inadequate examination of the affected joint, poor initial radiographic views, and general rarity of this injury, distal radioulnar

Using External Joint Stabilizer - Elbow (EJS-E) for treating elbow instability-biomechanical assessment and clinical outcomes.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the outcome of using an External Joint Stabilizer - Elbow (EJS-E) for persistent elbow instability based on biomechanical experiments and analysis of clinical results. METHODS: An EJS-E was used in 17 elbow instability patients. The median follow-up was 26 months (range, 12-42 months). We evaluated the flexion-extension and pronation-supination movement arcs, visual analog scale (VAS) score, Mayo Elbow Performance Score (MEPS), Broberg and Morrey classification system, and occurrence of complications in these patients. Moreover, construct stiffness and

Acute psychological stress does not influence joint position reproduction performance in the elbow joint.

BACKGROUND: Proprioceptive accuracy is an important aspect of motor functioning thus understanding how the stress response affects it can broaden our knowledge about the effects of stress on motor performance. There has been published only one quasi-experimental study on this topic to date, reporting a negative association between stress and proprioceptive accuracy. The aim of the present study was to explore whether the stress response influences proprioceptive accuracy in a randomized and controlled experimental setting. METHOD: Participants (Mage =  20.4 yrs, SDage =  1.91 yrs) were random
