This study examined the elder abuse cases that occurred in Gifu Prefecture, Japan between 1990 and 2000. We conducted a retrospective study of all the cases in which the victim was 65 years or older and autopsied in the Department of Legal Medicine, Gifu University School of Medicine. Fifteen victims were classified as elder abuse victims: five men and ten women. The victims ranged in age from 66 to 87 years (mean age, 74.5 years). The types of abuse were as follows: physical abuse, 13 cases; emotional abuse, five cases; neglect, four cases; and financial abuse, three cases. In eight cases, th

Institutionalized elderly who are frail and dependent are vulnerable to be abused by overwhelmed caregivers especially caregiver psychological abusive behavior is a growing but hidden problem with few evidence-based interventions. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of an educational support group in alleviating caregiver's psychological abusive behavior, reducing work stress and promoting knowledge of geriatric care-giving among a group of caregivers. A quasi-experimental design using a case control pre-post test approach was conducted. A total of 100 participants compl

BACKGROUND: Research on elder abuse has defined it as a multidimensional construct that encompasses a set of different abusive behaviours, victims, perpetrators and settings. The array of possible elder abuse configurations is difficult to capture. This study sought to identify victimization patterns that represent distinct elder abuse configurations based on specific abusive behaviours and on the relationship with the perpetrator; it also sought to determine the association between these latent classes with victims' characteristics.
METHOD: Data comes from two elder abuse surveys: a represen

This study aimed to develop and evaluate the psychometric properties of a nurse-administered instrument for the structured assessment of indicators potentially associated with elder abuse. Scale items were generated through literature review and expert evaluation, yielding a content validity index of 0.878. Each nurse assessed one unique older adult. Exploratory factor analysis included 373 nurse-older adult dyads, and confirmatory factor analysis included 334 independent dyads, totaling 707 assessments. Older adults were required to communicate effectively and be clinically suitable for asses

An effective screening tool is essential to elder abuse research. Although several instruments have been developed in China to measure elder abuse, they present several limitations. The instrument development involved three components: (1) generating questionnaire items; (2) questionnaire testing and data collection in older adults; and (3) psychometric evaluation of the Domestic Elder Abuse Scale (DEAS). We collected questionnaire responses from 3725 community-dwelling Chinese older adults. The 26-item DEAS showed good reliability and validity across five dimensions: physical abuse, psycholog

IMPORTANCE: It is widely known that individuals with adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have an increased risk of abusing their own children, thereby perpetuating the cycle of violence. However, the association between ACEs and elder abuse perpetration has not been fully examined.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between ACEs and elder abuse and the mediating factors.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study used data collected via the self-administered Japan COVID-19 and Society Internet Survey from September 12 to October 19, 2022. Men and women aged 20 to 64 ye

BACKGROUND: Elder abuse is underreported and undertreated. Methods for prevention and intervention are being developed, but the knowledge guiding such measures is often insufficiently based on the victims' own voices due to a paucity of studies. The aim of this study was therefore to explore experiences of elder abuse among the victims themselves.
METHODS: Consecutive inpatients ≥ 65 years of age at a hospital clinic in Sweden were invited to participate, and 24 victims of elder abuse were identified. Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted, and transcripts were analyzed using q

The intra- and extra-oral signs of physical abuse and neglect can appear visible to a dental professional during routine care. Yet, little is known about the existing pedagogies employed to discuss elder abuse and neglect in undergraduate dental education and the level of knowledge undergraduate dental students have about elder abuse and neglect. The purpose of this commentary is to present a literature review exploring how the subject of elder abuse and neglect is taught in dental schools and to discuss the results of a brief knowledge-based questionnaire focused on elder abuse and neglect ap

BACKGROUND: Elder abuse is a global public health and human rights problem that is predicted to increase as many countries experience a rapid growth in their population of older adults. Elder abuse undermines an older person's well-being and is associated with a range of serious health consequences. In institutional care settings, older residents are particularly vulnerable and hence at higher risk of being abused, but few countries have explored the extent and nature of this phenomenon in national studies. The aim of this study is to estimate the prevalence of observed and perpetrated staff-t

The recognition of injury patterns can aid forensic nurses to identify victims of elder abuse. This study examined the mechanism of injury of bruises endured by physical elder abuse victims. A sample of 67 elders aged 65 years and older who reported to Adult Protective Services for physical elder abuse was included in the analysis. A research nurse conducted assessments and documented the presence and characteristics of all bruises. Data regarding the abusive incident were collected through victim descriptions and the Revised Conflicts Tactic Scales (CTS2) physical assault scale. The most comm

OBJECTIVE: Elder abuse, an important human rights issue and public health problem, contributes to increased disability and mortality. In the last decades, several reviews have synthesized primary studies to determine its prevalence. This umbrella review aimed to estimate the worldwide overall prevalence rate of elder abuse in the community and care setting.
METHODS: Following prospective registration at PROSPERO (CRD42021281866) we conducted a search of eight electronic databases to identify systematic reviews from inception until 17 January 2023. The corrected covered area was calculated to

Elder abuse is an underestimated mechanism of musculoskeletal injury and is of significant concern in geriatric and rapidly aging populations of the United States. Abuse can occur in a home or institutional setting and may include physical, sexual, emotional, or financial abuse as well as neglect or abandonment. Elderly persons with shared living arrangements, those with a history of domestic violence, and those with cognitive impairment are at high risk of abuse. Prevalence studies in the United States estimate that more than 1 million elderly persons are victims of abuse annually, and up to

A national sample of 1,775 Canadian dentists, representing 13.2 per cent of all Canadian dentists, were evaluated via a mailed questionnaire about their knowledge, awareness of, and experiences with victims of elder abuse and/or neglect. In all, 83.3 per cent of respondents were aware, to varying extents, of elder abuse or neglect. Of the dentists observing a patient suspected to have been a victim of neglect or abuse, 40.6 per cent reported incidents of neglect, while physical abuse was seen 59.4 per cent of the time. The types of neglect most frequently observed included: neglect of personal

BACKGROUND: Elderly abuse and comorbid problematic substance use, disability, and physical and mental illness have been major problems in low-income countries. In most countries, the elderly are the most neglected segment of the population, and there is insufficient information about elderly abuse perpetration or victimization in low-income countries like Ethiopia. Therefore, this study was aimed to assess elderly abuse perpetration or victimization among the elderly in Mizan Aman town, southwest Ethiopia.
METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional study design was conducted among 268 elderly

Elder abuse is internationally recognized as a growing problem of the 21st century that requires urgent intervention and action. This review aimed to synthesize evidence on the prevalence and risk factors of elder abuse between 2010 and 2022. A total of 2875 articles were identified through database searches, of which 28 met the inclusion criteria and were included in the final analysis (24 cross-sectional studies, 3 prospective studies, and 1 descriptive study). Reported prevalence rates of elder abuse ranged from 2.2% to 81.2% overall, while studies conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic rep

Elder abuse (EA) case resolution is contingent upon victims accepting and pursuing protective service interventions. Refusal/underutilization of services is a major problem. This study explored factors associated with extent of EA victim service utilization (SU). Data were collected from a random sample of EA cases (n = 250) at a protective service program in New York City. In cases involving financial abuse, higher SU was associated with females, poor health, perceived danger, previous help-seeking, and self or family referral. In physical abuse cases, higher SU was associated with family ref

We report a case of bilateral complete dislocation of lenses into the vitreous cavities due to elder abuse in a patient with senile dementia. According to the patient's son, bilateral complete lens dislocation occurred after he hit his father in the head with socks in order to control his violent behavior. Although the patient was taken to our ophthalmological ward for a planned vitrectomy, restlessness and inability to remain in his room during the night led to his leaving the hospital. The patient has not returned but did receive a vitrectomy at another clinic. While the number of patients w
