Postendoscopic Mucosal Injury Syndrome Mimicking Postpolypectomy Electrocoagulation Syndrome After Colonoscopic Biopsy.

This case report describes a rare, severe presentation of postendoscopic mucosal injury syndrome mimicking postpolypectomy electrocoagulation syndrome (PPECS) in a 40-year-old woman. After an uncomplicated colonoscopy with mucosal biopsies, the patient developed septic shock with hemodynamic instability, requiring intensive care. Computed tomography findings raised suspicion for colonic perforation, prompting an exploratory laparotomy. Surgical exploration, however, revealed no perforation but significant serosal inflammation and reactive lymphadenopathy consistent with a PPECS-like inflammato

Long-term outcomes of electrocoagulation versus radiofrequency thermoablation for varicose veins.

OBJECTIVE: Thermoablation is increasingly being used as an alternative to traditional surgery for treating primary varicose veins. Electrocoagulation ablation (EA) of the great saphenous vein (GSV) has demonstrated effectiveness and safety comparable with that of radiofrequency ablation (RFA); however, its long-term outcomes have not been investigated previously. METHODS: This study involves a long-term follow-up of patients who participated in a double-blind, randomized clinical trial. Individuals with lower limb varicose veins and incompetence of GSV were randomly assigned to two treatment

Endoscopic Hemostatic Forceps High-Frequency Electrocoagulation on Peptic Ulcers and Dieulafoy.

BACKGROUND: Peptic ulcers are a common cause of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. In contrast, Dieulafoy's disease is a rare cause of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Upper gastrointestinal arterial bleeding may lead to hemorrhagic shock and threaten the patient's life. Achieving effective hemostasis in patients with upper gastrointestinal arterial bleeding remains a challenge. This study determined the efficacy of endoscopic hemostatic forceps high-frequency (HF) electrocoagulation for the treatment of upper gastrointestinal arterial bleeding caused by peptic ulcers and Dieulafoy's disease. Features of electrocoagulation syndrome after endoscopic submucosal dissection for colorectal neoplasm.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is a promising treatment for large gastrointestinal superficial neoplasms, although it is technically difficult, and perforation and delayed bleeding are well-known adverse events. However, there have been no large studies about electrocoagulation syndrome after colorectal ESD. The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence and clinical significant risk factors of post-ESD coagulation syndrome (PECS). METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study conducted in a referral cancer center. A total of 336 patients with colorectal neo

Endoscopic treatment of pharyngeal pouches: electrocoagulation vs carbon dioxide (CO2) laser.

Endoscopic treatment of a hypopharyngeal diverticulum was performed in 75 patients during the period 1976-1990. Initially electrocoagulation was used to divide the septum between the diverticulum and oesophagus. More recently, the CO2 laser combined with the operating microscope has been used. Although this has reduced the need for multiple endoscopic procedures compared to the electrocoagulation technique, this reduction was not statistically significant. In our follow-up group of patients, 49 (72.7%) were highly satisfied and 14 (19.6%) fairly satisfied. In this respect no significant differ

Kinetic Modeling of Iron Electrocoagulation in Moderate to Slightly Acidic Media.

Electrocoagulation is an emerging process for water and wastewater treatment. However, there is a gap in understanding the effects of electrocoagulation operation (i.e., pH, applied current, electrode configuration) and the concentration dependencies of reactive species involved in the degradation of contaminants. Here, we show the development and validation of a batch reactor kinetic model for an electrocoagulation process in moderate to slightly acidic media for water treatment, guided by experimental data of electrocoagulation in synthetic wastewater at pH values of 5.0, 5.5, 6.0, and 6.5.

Severe hematuria after transurethral electrocoagulation in a patient with an arteriovesical fistula.

BACKGROUND: Arteriovesical fistulas are extremely rare. Only eleven cases were previously reported in the literature. They can occur iatrogenically, traumatically or spontaneously. CASE PRESENTATION: We report an unusual case of a 62-year-old woman with arteriovesical fistula that developed fatal hematuria after transurethral electrocoagulation. Computed tomography (CT) and selective angiography revealed a pseudoaneurysm of the right superior vesical artery with arteriovesical fistula formation, which was managed by transarterial embolization. CONCLUSIONS: Contrast enhanced CT or CT angiogra

Transcaruncular electrocoagulation of anterior ethmoidal artery for the treatment of severe epistaxis.

OBJECTIVE: The irrigation of the upper third of the nasal fossa is supplied by the anterior ethmoidal artery. We describe a surgical technique to deal with epistaxis due to anterior ethmoidal artery bleeding. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From January 2006 to March 2010 transcaruncular coagulation of the anterior ethmoidal artery was done on nine patients with epistaxis of the upper third of the nasal fossa. RESULTS: The procedure was successful on all cases. No bleeding relapse, major complications, or nasal or orbital sequelae were present in any of the patients. DISCUSSION/CONCLUSIONS: Transcaru

Vertebral growth modulation by hemicircumferential electrocoagulation: an experimental study in pigs.

INTRODUCTION: This experimental study in pigs was aimed at evaluating spinal growth disorders after partial arrest of the vertebral epiphyseal plates (EP) and neurocentral cartilages (NCC). Unilateral and multisegmental single or combined lesions of the physeal structures were performed by electrocoagulation throughout a video-assisted thoracoscopical approach. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty 4-week-old domestic pigs (mean weight 16 kg) were included in the experiments. The superior and inferior epiphyseal plates of T5 to T9 vertebra were damaged in ten animals by hemicircumferential electrocoa

Periorbital syringoma: a pilot study of the efficacy of low-voltage electrocoagulation.

BACKGROUND: Management of periorbital syringomas is problematic and avoided by many inexperienced physicians. The medical literature presently prefers CO(2) laser resurfacing to many other modalities, but the subject of electrosurgery has not been well explored. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of electrocoagulation at low voltages in treating periorbital syringomas. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty cases were collected during the period of 2002 through 2005. All cases were photographed before treatment with a dual-frequency 4-MHz radiofrequency device (Surgitron, Ellman Internatio

Electrocoagulation extends the indication of calcium hydroxide pulpotomy in the primary dentition.

The primary molars received calcium hydroxide pulpotomy with or without the electrocoagulation procedure. Teeth were evaluated clinically and radiographically at 6, 12, and 24 months after treatment. There was no statistically significant difference in success rate between calcium hydroxide pulpotomies, with and without the electrocoagulation procedure, either clinically or radiographically. These results indicate that a pulpotomy with calcium hydroxide is an effective treatment for cariously exposed pulp in primary molars and electrocoagulation can extend its indication.

Antireflux surgery followed by bipolar electrocoagulation in the treatment of Barrett's esophagus.

BACKGROUND: Management of Barrett's esophagus requires reduction of gastric acid secretion and screening for the development of adenocarcinoma. However, the current therapeutic options are ineffective in reducing the Barrett's mucosa. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of endoscopic thermal coagulation of Barrett's mucosa as an alternative therapeutic approach and the recurrence of the disease in the long term. METHODS: Fourteen patients (11 men, 3 women; mean age 45.7 years) with Barrett's esophagus participated in the study. They underwent laparoscopic fundoplication an

[Electrocoagulation of the endometrium. A new method for the treatment of hemorrhagic disorders in women].

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate endometrial ablation as an alternative treatment for heavy dysfunctional menstrual bleeding in women with indications for hysterectomy. After preliminary treatment with danazol 200 mg q.i.d. for four weeks, transcervical endometrial ablation was performed in general anaesthesia with a hysteroresectoscope and the "rollerball" electrode. Twenty-five consecutive patients were treated and discharged the following day. Twenty-two patients (88%) were very satisfied with the result. 68% became hypomenorrhoeic and 20% amenorrhoeic. Three patients requi

[A modified monopolar electrocoagulation probe for endoscopic treatment of gastrointestinal hemorrhage].

A modified monopolar electrocoagulation probe for endoscopic treatment of gastrointestinal bleedings in special situations is described. The tip of the active electrode may be moved foreward or drawn back into a teflon catheter. Thereby, blood clots are removed from the tip of the probe. The device is easy to use, reliable in emergency endoscopies and can be employed with conventional high-frequency diathermy instruments. The probe is inexpensive. 49 patients with active gastrointestinal bleedings according to Forrest Ib were treated. In 40/49 patients permanent hemostasis could be achieved. I
