Needle electromyography (EMG) is used for the diagnosis of a neural injury in patients with a cervical/lumbar radiculopathy, plexopathy, peripheral neuropathy, or myopathy. Needle EMG is a particularly invasive test and thus it is important to minimize the pain during inspections. In this paper, we introduce the Electrodiagnosis Support System (ESS), which is a clinical decision support system specialized for neural injury diagnosis in the upper limb. ESS can guide users through the diagnosis process and assist them in making the optimal decision for minimizing unnecessary inspections and as a

OBJECTIVE: To study electrodiagnostic findings and recovery patterns of patients with facial nerve paralysis.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: Seventy-six medical records of patients who had a facial paralysis and had their electrodiagnosis performed in a 2-year period were reviewed. Patients were invited for re-evaluation. The patients would be evaluated according to House-Brackmann Facial Nerve Grading Scale (HBFNGS), residual impairment, disability, emotional and social consequences.
RESULTS: Complete data were obtained from 50 patients whose mean age was 47.0 +/- 17.9 years. Seventy-two percent were

Patients with metabolic syndrome are at increased risk of peripheral neuropathy; entrapment neuropathies, such as carpal tunnel syndrome; and spine disease that can lead to radiculopathy or spinal stenosis. Electrodiagnostic studies are a valuable part of patient care in this population. They can confirm suspected diagnoses, uncover additional conditions, and lead to the diagnosis of other causes of neuropathy that require treatment. By assessing the severity of neuropathy, patients at high risk for falls, functional decline, and foot ulcers are identified to guide prevention, treatment, and p

BACKGROUND: F waves are late electrophysiological responses to antidromic activation of motor neurons and are used to evaluate the conduction along the whole length of peripheral nerves. We aimed to determine the diagnostic efficacies of minimum median nerve F-wave latency (FWL) and median-to-ulnar nerve F-wave latency difference (FWLD) on carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The electrophysiological studies consisted of sensory and motor nerve conduction and F-wave studies of the median and ulnar nerves. The best cut-off points of minimum median nerve FWL and FWLD for the dia

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies showed "F-wave inversion" (F-INV) as a sensitive method in the electrodiagnosis of early stage of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). This study aimed at evaluating the sensitivity and specificity of F-wave and nerve conduction velocity (NCV) testing in CTS.
METHODS: We consecutively enrolled 244 cases and 108 controls. F-waves analysis included: Fwave minimum and mean latencies, F-wave persistence and chronodispersion, mean-F/CMAP amplitude ratio, F-INV. Specificity and sensitivity of F-waves parameters were calculated in the whole sample of CTS patients and by grouping

We present a review of the international literature concerning sonography for the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Analysis of the results and comparison with electrodiagnostic data provide a sensible albeit personal view on the relevance of sonography and whether it competes or is complementary to electrodiagnosis (EDX). Although EDX is considered as the gold standard for CTS diagnosis, one author chose surgical results to define CTS. The normal and threshold mean values for sonography are particularly variable from one study to another. The standard deviation (S.D.), when compared

UNLABELLED: This self-directed learning module highlights formation of a differential diagnosis as well as electrodiagnostic evaluation for those patients who present with the common complaint of weakness. It is part of the chapter on neuromuscular rehabilitation and electrodiagnosis in the Self-Directed Physiatric Education Program for practitioners and trainees in physical medicine and rehabilitation. This article specifically focuses on the common symptoms and typical clinical findings that allow the clinician to narrow the differential diagnosis. This is followed by the diagnostic evaluati

The endoscopic application of electrodes for electromyography of laryngeal and pharyngeal muscles is routinely performed in adults and very helpful in electrodiagnosis of voice and speech disturbances. Dysfunctions of the lower cranial nerves in infancy and childhood are congenital diseases in most of the cases. Up to now the most helpful diagnostic tool has been direct laryngoscopy which, however, could not classify the type of peripheral or central neural or even muscular disease. It is only by electrophysiological methods that the laryngologist can answer these questions. Electromyography a

Transcarpal conduction techniques are commonly used to be supplementary techniques to distal sensory and motor latencies (DSL and DML) in the electrodiagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). However, which transcarpal conduction techniques, or combination of techniques, are the most sensitive for the electrodiagnosis of CTS is unknown. To determine which transcarpal conduction technique is the most sensitive for the electrodiagnosis of CTS, we prospectively conduct this study. Study subjects were 100 patients with CTS and 50 controls. In addition to DSL and DML determinations, all subjects we

INTRODUCTION: Electrodiagnostic testing is central to the evaluation of polyneuropathy, yet substantial variability exists in nerve selection and testing protocols. This study aimed to identify the minimum nerve set that provides high sensitivity and overall diagnostic accuracy while retaining adequate specificity. Testing two motor and two sensory nerves was hypothesized to be diagnostically sufficient.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional cohort study using a deidentified database from the electrophysiology laboratory at Sheba Medical Center. Patients diagnosed with polyneu

It is controversial as to whether the electrophysiological Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) subtypes can be diagnosed on the basis of a single study and which criteria sets and cut-offs should be used. Serial electrophysiologic studies have shown that a significant number of patients changed electrodiagnostic subtype largely because of the recognition of reversible conduction failure as a possible evidence of axonal pathology. However, other reports concluded that electrodiagnosis can be made by a single study, the subtypes depending on the characteristic of the criteria set applied. Such diverge

INTRODUCTION: In patients with ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE) the precise determination of the site of lesion is important for subsequent differential diagnostic considerations and therapeutic management. Due to a paucity of comparable data, to better define the role of different diagnostic tests, we performed the first prospective study comparing the diagnostic accuracy of short segment nerve stimulation, nerve ultrasonography, MR neurography (MRN), and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in patients with UNE.
METHODS: UNE was clinically diagnosed in 17 patients with 18 affected elbows. For

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Nerve conduction study is the most sensitive test for diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). This test is normal in some patients with mild CTS. Median nerve conduction study evaluation after a provocative test (e.g. wrist flexion) may be helpful for diagnosis of mild CTS. This study aimed to determine the effect of wrist flexion on median nerve conduction in patients suspected to CTS and in healthy subjects.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this case-control study, 20 patients (20 hands) with clinical signs of CTS and normal routine electrodiagnosis test results and

INTRODUCTION: Many studies had been performed in the last years to prove the usefulness of ultrasonographic measurements of the median nerve in the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). We wanted to determine its reliability and to compare this technology with electromyography (EMG) in ordinary diagnostic conditions.
METHODS: The study involved 90 wrists with suspected CTS, 35 controlateral wrists and 52 control wrists. The diagnosis of CTS was confirmed in 81 cases by the hand symptom diagram and the Tinnel and Phalen sign. The EMG examination evaluated medianulnar sensory latency diffe

INTRODUCTION: Electrodiagnostic tests are performed in order to obtain information on the severity of lesions and the possibility of functional recovery. Classic electrodiagnostics implies excitability testing by faradic and galvanic currents, and chronaximetry. This method has been pushed out by new diagnostic procedures, although it is a reliable method that can give data about the severity of lesions and precise data about the maximal possible function recovery and the time it takes. The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between the results of classic electrodiagnosis and
