Surface Electromyography-Controlled Automobile Steering Assistance.

Disabilities of the upper limb, such as hemiplegia or upper limb amputation, can limit automobile drivers to steering with one healthy arm. For the benefit of these drivers, recent studies have developed prototype interfaces that realized surface electromyography (sEMG)-controlled steering assistance with path-following accuracy that has been validated with driving simulations. In contrast, the current study expands the application of sEMG-controlled steering assistance by validating the Myo armband, a mass-produced sEMG-based interface, with respect to the path-following accuracy of a commerc

Clinical impact of single-fiber electromyography.

The major clinical impact of single-fiber electromyography has been from its role in confirming, or excluding, the diagnosis of myasthenia gravis (MG). Jitter measurements also have a clinical role in demonstrating changes in disease severity in patients with MG and Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome, in demonstrating subtle changes in motor unit architecture and physiology in patients with nerve and muscle diseases, and in demonstrating the remote effects of locally injected botulinum toxin. In addition to these clinical roles, the ability to identify the activity from single muscle fibers mak

Needle electromyography in carpal tunnel syndrome.

The role of needle electromyography (EMG) in the routine evaluation of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is not clear. The aim of this study was to determine if needle EMG examination of the thenar muscles could provide useful information in addition to the nerve conduction (NC) studies. Electrophysiologic procedures performed on 84 patients (103 hands) consistent with CTS were reviewed. The median thenar motor NC data were matched with the needle EMG findings in the abductor pollicis brevis (APB) muscle. The severity of the needle EMG findings in the APB muscle correlated well with the severity of

Electromyography data on spontaneously hypertensive rats.

1. To investigate the state of nerve-muscle excitability in 20 spontaneously hypertensive rats and 22 Wistar rats local electromyography was carried out in periods of rest and under the maximum strain of 10 min ischaemia of m.flexor femoris (Trusso's test). 2. The electromyography phenomenon found in the SHR group corresponds to typical tetany electromyography correlatives. 3. Thus, changes occur to the nerve-muscle excitability state according to the neurogenic tetany type.

[Macro electromyography in motor neuron disease].

Macroelectromyography (macroEMG) is a technique that provides information about the size of a motor unit which the conventional EMG is not able to. We used macroEMG to study 11 cases of motor neuron disease (MND), presenting with upper extremities symptoms (no lower extremities symptoms). Muscles we selected to study were the biceps brachii and the tibialis anterior. Amplitude, area and fiber density (FD) were analysed. The controlled groups consisted of 11 cases of myasthenia gravis (MG) and 11 normal subjects. Our study demonstrated that in the MND group, amplitude, area and FD of both muscl

Dynamic electromyography to assess elbow spasticity.

Control of elbow motion was evaluated in 45 extremities of adults with spasticity resulting from traumatic brain injury with use of dynamic electromyography. Simultaneous recording of elbow motion was obtained using a double parallelogram goniometer. Thirty-four male and 9 female patients were studied. Mean elbow flexion was 85 degrees and mean extension was 20 degrees. The average time of elbow flexion was 1.8 seconds. Extension time was prolonged to a mean of 4.0 seconds. Dynamic electromyography revealed a consistent pattern of muscle activity. Severe spasticity was noted in the brachioradi

Stapedial muscle electromyography in various diseases.

Stapedial muscle electromyograms (SEMGs), obtained by an averaging technique of electrocochleography, were studied in patients with various diseases. The latency of SEMG was prolonged in incomplete facial palsy (Bell's palsy and cerebellopontine angle tumor), with stapedial reflex (SR) of a small amplitude or without SR. In otitis media with effusion, in which SR could not be obtained, SEMGs were clearly observed and showed normal waveforms and latencies. In Meniere's disease and sensorineural hearing loss, SEMG waves had normal waveforms and latencies. These results indicate that the SEMG sho

Intraoperative evoked electromyography in Bell's palsy.

The technique of intraoperative evoked electromyography is described in detail. Direct intraoperative stimulation of the exposed facial nerve identified the sites of nerve impulse conduction blocks in 16 of 18 patients who needed decompression for Bell' s palsy. In order to determine the site of impulse conduction block the test must be performed before 100 per cent nerve degeneration occurs. The lesions extended only a few millimeters and were found to be proximal to the geniculate ganglion in 15 (94 per cent) of these patients. Schirmer's test correctly identified the sites of the lesions in

Single-fiber electromyography in myasthenia gravis.

One-hundred-sixty single-fiber EMG studies of the extensor digitorum communis muscle were performed on 127 patients with myasthenia gravis; 131 demonstrated defective neuromuscular transmission. Jitter determinations in the biceps, deltoid or frontalis muscles increased the diagnostic yield significantly. Evoked-potential EMG studies were abnormal in less than 50 percent of patients in whom they were performed. The most sensitive criterion of abnormality was the percentage of fibers with increased jitter; the sensitivity of the test was enhanced, however, if the mean jitter of the tested muscl

A Circular, Wireless Surface-Electromyography Array.

Commercial, high-tech upper limb prostheses offer a lot of functionality and are equipped with high-grade control mechanisms. However, they are relatively expensive and are not accessible to the majority of amputees. Therefore, more affordable, accessible, open-source, and 3D-printable alternatives are being developed. A commonly proposed approach to control these prostheses is to use bio-potentials generated by skeletal muscles, which can be measured using surface electromyography (sEMG). However, this control mechanism either lacks accuracy when a single sEMG sensor is used or involves the u

Surface electromyography using dry polymeric electrodes.

Conventional wet Ag/AgCl electrodes are widely used in electrocardiography, electromyography (EMG), and electroencephalography (EEG) and are considered the gold standard for biopotential measurements. However, these electrodes require substantial skin preparation, are single use, and cannot be used for continuous monitoring (>24 h). For these reasons, dry electrodes are preferable during surface electromyography (sEMG) due to their convenience, durability, and longevity. Dry conductive elastomers (CEs) combine conductivity, flexibility, and stretchability. In this study, CEs combining poly(3,4

Laryngeal electromyography: an evidence-based review.

This article reports on an evidence-based review of laryngeal electromyography (EMG) as a technique for use in the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of laryngeal movement disorders including the laryngeal dystonias, vocal fold paralysis, and other neurolaryngological disorders. The authors performed a systematic review of the medical literature from 1944 through 2001 on the clinical application of EMG to laryngeal disorders. Thirty-three of the 584 articles met the predefined inclusion criteria. The evidence demonstrated that in a double-blind treatment trial of botulinum toxin versus saline

Intraoperative electromyography during thoracolumbar spinal surgery.

Intraoperative electromyography can provide useful information regarding lumbosacral nerve root function during thoracolumbar spinal surgery. Free-running electromyography provides continuous feedback regarding the location and potential for surgical injury to the lumbosacral nerve roots within the operative field. Stimulus-evoked electromyography can confirm that transpedicular instrumentation has been positioned correctly within the bony cortex. However, electromyography has a number of potential limitations, which are discussed in this article along with improved methods to increase the ove

Simplifying the diagnosis of 4 common voiding conditions using uroflow/electromyography, electromyography lag time and voiding history.

PURPOSE: Noninvasive uroflowmetry with simultaneous electromyography is useful to triage cases of lower urinary tract symptoms into 4 urodynamically defined conditions, especially when incorporating short and long electromyography lag times in the analysis. We determined the prevalence of these 4 conditions at a single referral institution and the usefulness of uroflowmetry with simultaneous electromyography and electromyography lag time to confirm the diagnosis, guide treatment and monitor response. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the records of 100 consecutive normal chil

Safety of Laryngeal Electromyography and Repetitive Stimulation.

OBJECTIVES: Laryngeal Electromyography (LEMG) is a procedure used to assess electrical signals from laryngeal muscles. It is considered to be the gold standard test for examining vocal fold paresis/paralysis. Repetitive stimulation studies, which usually are performed at the time of LEMG, can aid in assessment of neuromuscular function. Electromyography poses risks to the patient due to the use of electricity and needles. The purpose of this paper was to evaluate the safety of LEMG and discuss the possible complications. METHODS: This was a retrospective review of patients from January 2015 t

An Implantable System For Chronic In Vivo Electromyography.

Electromyography (EMG) measures the muscle response to electrical stimulation or spontaneous activity of motor units and plays an important role in assessing neuromuscular function. Chronic recording of EMG activity reflecting a muscle's reinnervation status after nerve injury has been limited, due to the invasive nature of traditional EMG recording techniques. In this regard, an implantable system is designed for long-term, in vivo EMG recording and nerve stimulation. It has been applied and tested in a study on reinnervation of laryngeal muscles. This system consists of 1) two bipolar electr

Laryngeal Electromyography is Helpful for Cardiovocal Syndrome.

Laryngeal electromyography is used in the evaluation of vocal cord paralysis to confirm the diagnosis, to guide the diagnostic work-up for etiology, to provide prognostic information and to help choose the correct treatment for the patient. Cardiovocal syndrome is characterised by vocal cord paralysis due to a cardiovascular disease. A wide spectrum of conditions can result in this syndrome. Here we present a case of cardiovocal syndrome in association with primary pulmonary hypertension. Laryngeal electromyography was used to guide the work-up of differential diagnosis and also for further in
