Hospitalization related to chronic hepatitis B and C in recent immigrants in Canada: An immigration administrative data-linked, population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Canadian immigrants from countries where the hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) are endemic may be at higher risk of liver-related disease than Canadian-born residents. This study compared HBV- and HCV-related hospitalizations in Canadian immigrants (arriving from 1980 to 2013) and long-term residents (Canadian-born population and pre-1980 immigrants) and aimed to describe the burden of disease in both groups. METHODS: Based on the 2004/2005-to-2013/2014 hospital Discharge Abstract Database linked to the 1980-to-2013 Longitudinal Immigration Database, this descrip

Documentation Status and Self-Rated Physical Health Among Latinx Young Adult Immigrants: the Mediating Roles of Immigration and Healthcare Stress.

Previous research has demonstrated that undocumented Latinx immigrants in the USA report worse physical health outcomes than documented immigrants. Some studies suggest that immigration-related stress and healthcare related-stress may explain this relationship, but none have tested it empirically. The purpose of this study was to determine if immigration-related stress and healthcare-related stress in the USA explain the relationship between documentation status and physical health among Latinx immigrants in North Carolina. The conceptual model was tested utilizing baseline data from a longitu

Why bother with testing? The validity of immigrants' self-assessed language proficiency.

Due to its central role in social integration, immigrants' language proficiency is a matter of considerable societal concern and scientific interest. This study examines whether commonly applied self-assessments of linguistic skills yield results that are similar to those of competence tests and thus whether these self-assessments are valid measures of language proficiency. Analyses of data for immigrant youth reveal moderate correlations between language test scores and two types of self-assessments (general ability estimates and concrete performance estimates) for the participants' first and

Maternal nutrition among women from Sub-Saharan Africa, with a focus on Nigeria, and potential implications for pregnancy outcomes among immigrant populations in developed countries.

Pregnant women in countries of Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are at risk of poor nutritional status and adverse outcomes as a result of poverty, food insecurity, sub-optimal healthcare facilities, frequent infections and frequent pregnancies. Studies from Nigeria, for example, have revealed a high prevalence of both under- and over-nutrition, as well as nutrient deficiencies, including iron, folate, vitamin D and vitamin A. Subsequently, obstetric complications, including hypertension, anaemia, neural tube defects, night-blindness, low birth weight and maternal and perinatal mortality, are common.

Migration trajectories, uncertainty and health: a conceptual review.

BACKGROUND: Migration trajectories are complex, non-linear movements, including periods of immobility, secondary migration, return and psychosocial changes. A defining feature of these trajectories is uncertainty, resulting from incomplete place-based knowledge and the unpredictable future. We examined how migration trajectories and associated uncertainties have been conceptualised and operationalised in health-related research. METHODS: We conducted a conceptual review with systematic searches in Medline, Embase, Web of Science, and Global Index Medicus. After duplicate screening, we extract

[Initial assessment of immigrant patients in primary care].

The clinical interview of immigrant patients requires cultural competence to ensure good understanding and correct communication, in addition to collecting specific information that differs from that of native patients, such as origin and migratory route or cultural identity. Screening for latent tuberculosis infection is recommended in certain cases and screening for other infections, both cosmopolitan with a higher prevalence in migrants (HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B and C) and imported (Chagas, intestinal parasites, strongyloidiasis, schistosomiasis), depending on origin. It is essential to c

Beri-beri in immigrant workers--a report of three cases.

Three East Timorese immigrants presented with signs and symptoms of heart failure in early December 1992. One of them also had features of peripheral neuropathy. Another collapsed within 24 hours of admission and attempts at resuscitation failed. The other two showed dramatic response to oral thiamine therapy. An investigation into their dietary history established gross deficiency in fresh vegetables.

Educational attainment and dementia among older women in the US: Variation by immigration status.

Higher education is associated with lower dementia risk. However, less is known about the moderating role of immigration status among women. The aims of this study were to: (a) examine the association between educational attainment and dementia among older women and (b) assess the moderating role of immigration status. Data were obtained from the 2020 Health and Retirement Study. Unadjusted and multivariable multinomial logistic regression models adjusting for sociodemographic confounders and depression were used to determine the association between education and cognition status by immigratio

The changing epidemiology of spinal tuberculosis: the influence of international immigration in Catalonia, 1993-2014.

The overall incidence of spinal tuberculosis (TB) appears to be stable or declining in most European countries, but with an increasing proportion of cases in the foreign-born populations. We performed a retrospective observational study (1993-2014), including all cases of spinal TB diagnosed at a Barcelona hospital to assess the epidemiological changes. Fifty-four episodes (48·1% males, median age 52 years) of spinal TB were diagnosed. The percentage of foreign-born residents with spinal TB increased from 14% to 45·2% in the last 10 years (P = 0·017). Positive Mycobacterium tuberculosis testin

[Ivory Coast uprising and returning Burkinabe immigrants: evaluation of the risk for reemergence of sleeping sickness in Burkina Faso].

Following the sociopolitical unrest that occurred in Ivory Coast in 2002, 360,000 Burkinabe immigrants returned to Burkina Faso that was the epicenter of sleeping sickness last century and is now thought to be free of autochthonous transmission. The purpose of this study was to determine if the massive return of immigrants from human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) endemic areas of Ivory Coast to areas in Burkina Faso where the vector (tsetse fly) is currently present could lead to re-emergence of the disease. Risk areas for re-emergence were identified taking into account the number of returnin

Skull-photo superimposition and border deaths: identification through exclusion and the failure to exclude.

We report on the application of video skull-photo superimposition as an identification method in a case from Ajo, Arizona in which five individuals died after crossing into southern Arizona from Mexico. Initial analyses at the Pima County Forensic Science Center in Tucson, Arizona determined that the disarticulated skeletal remains represented two adult Hispanic males and three adult Hispanic females. Based on biological profiles, both the males and one of the females were tentatively identified and assigned names. The other two females were too similar in age and height, making skeletal separ

Survival outcomes and healthcare utilization between immigrant patients and Danish-born patients with hematological cancers: a Danish population-based study.

Overall survival (OS) for patients with a hematological cancer may differ between immigrant and Danish-born patients due to disparities in socioeconomic status, health literacy, and language proficiency. This cohort study aimed to investigate survival and hospitalization according to immigrant status while controlling for confounders. Patients with newly diagnosed hematological cancer in 2000-2020 were identified in the Danish nationwide hematological registers and stratified into Danish-born, Western, and non-Western patients. Patients were followed from diagnosis until death, 31st December 2

Prevalence of mental illness in immigrant and non-immigrant U.S. Latino groups.

OBJECTIVE: Although widely reported among Latino populations, contradictory evidence exists regarding the generalizability of the immigrant paradox, i.e., that foreign nativity protects against psychiatric disorders. The authors examined whether this paradox applies to all Latino groups by comparing estimates of lifetime psychiatric disorders among immigrant Latino subjects, U.S-born Latino subjects, and non-Latino white subjects. METHOD: The authors combined and examined data from the National Latino and Asian American Study and the National Comorbidity Survey Replication, two of the largest

Push and Pull Factors of Why Medical Students Want to Leave Türkiye: A Countrywide Multicenter Study.

Phenomenon: Physician immigration from other countries is increasing as developed countries continue to be desirable destinations for physicians; however, the determinants of Turkish physicians' migration decisions are still unclear. Despite its wide coverage in the media and among physicians in Türkiye, and being the subject of much debate, there is insufficient data to justify this attention. With this study, we aimed to investigate the tendency of senior medical students in Türkiye to pursue their professional careers abroad and its related factors. Approach: This cross-sectional study invo
