Dyadic view of expressed emotion, stress, and eating disorder psychopathology.

Prevailing models of the association between expressed emotion (EE) and relapse conceptualize EE as a form of stress for patients. In eating disorders (ED), there is no research addressed to evaluate the degree to which patients feel stress due to their relatives' EE. It has been neither investigated how the EE and the subsequent stress relate to disordered behaviours and attitudes neither. Using a sample of 77 inpatients with ED, this study aimed to: (1) evaluate patients' reported level of stress as it relates to their caregivers' EE, particularly as associated with carer's criticism, emotio

Eating disorders and multi-level models of emotion: an integrated model.

This paper examines the relationship between emotions, depression and eating disorders. Initially, a review is undertaken of the current state of the research and clinical literature with regard to emotional factors in eating disorders. This literature is then integrated within a version of the multi-level model of emotion proposed by Power and Dalgleish. The aim of this paper is to incorporate a basic emotions, multi-modal perspective into developing a new emotions-based model that offers a theoretical understanding of psychological mechanisms in eating disorders. Within the new Schematic Pro

Emotional responses to food in adults with an eating disorder: a qualitative exploration.

There is a dearth of qualitative research exploring eating disordered individuals' emotional responses to the sight of different types of food. In this study we asked 10 adult women diagnosed with bulimia nervosa, anorexia nervosa or an eating disorder not otherwise specified (EDNOS) to articulate their thoughts whilst viewing slides of a range of different foodstuffs, during an in-depth interview session. The data were transcribed and subjected to qualitative analysis. A core theme of 'Control' was identified. Whilst control has been previously acknowledged in the literature as an important a

Longitudinal associations between emotional eating and sleep disturbances: A Generation R study.

BACKGROUND: Emotional eating behaviors, defined as the tendency to eat in response to negative emotions, increase in frequency throughout adolescence and have been linked to negative health outcomes, including higher body weight and unhealthier dietary patterns. Although cross-sectional studies have established relationships between emotional eating and sleep disturbances in adolescents, the directionality and underlying mechanisms of this association remain unclear. This study therefore examined within-person associations between emotional eating and sleep disturbances across adolescence. ME

Mind over meal: affective neuroscience perspectives on emotional patterns in eating disorders.

BACKGROUND: Recent research highlights the central role of emotion in psychopathology, with Panksepp's Affective Neuroscience Theory identifying seven primary emotional systems critical for mammalian survival. Although this framework has advanced understanding of disorders such as depression and addiction, its application to eating pathology remains limited. OBJECTIVE: The present study integrates affective neuroscience with behavioural analysis, conceptualizing emotions not merely as neural activations but as classes of behaviour shaped by phylogenetic selection and ontogenetic contingencies

Associations of adolescent emotional and loss of control eating with 1-year changes in disordered eating, weight, and adiposity.

OBJECTIVE: Adolescent emotional-eating, referring to eating in response to negative affective states, is frequently reported by those with loss of control (LOC) eating. Although LOC eating has been shown to predict exacerbated disordered eating and excess weight/adiposity gain, the extent to which emotional-eating, either alone or in combination with LOC, predicts adverse outcomes has not been determined. Thus, we examined associations of baseline emotional-eating with changes in disordered eating, BMI, and adiposity over 1-year, and to what degree the presence or absence of baseline LOC moder

Recollections of controlling parental feeding patterns: Associations with binge eating and emotional eating in a pre-surgical bariatric population.

Controlling parental feeding practices are associated with childhood weight and eating behaviors, but few studies have explored the relation to adult eating behaviors. People seeking bariatric surgery often have childhood onset of obesity and report difficulties with binge and emotional eating. This study examined the relationship between recalled controlling parental feeding practices (e.g., pressure to eat and restriction) and current binge and emotional eating in a sample of adults seeking bariatric surgery. Participants (N = 155) completed self-report measures assessing recollections of pa

Characterizing Emotional Inertia and Its Relation to Eating Disorder Behaviors in Patients Seeking Treatment for Binge-Spectrum Eating Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Emotional inertia, the tendency for emotions to persist over time, has received little attention in relation to eating disorders (ED). However, emotional inertia may reflect poor emotion regulation and unresponsiveness to environmental cues, and individuals may use ED behaviors to distract from or escape persistent emotions. We aimed to characterize emotional inertia and its relationship with ED behavior frequency among adults with EDs. METHOD: Adults (N = 94) with bulimia nervosa (BN) or binge eating disorder (BED) spectrum EDs completed 7-14 days of ecological momentary assessmen

High self-reported rates of neglect and emotional abuse, by persons with binge eating disorder and night eating syndrome.

This study compared rates of self-reported childhood maltreatment in three groups diagnosed using semi-structured interviews: binge eating disorder (BED; n=176), night eating syndrome (NES, n=57), and overweight/obese comparison (OC, n=38). We used the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) to assess childhood maltreatment and the Beck Depression Inventory-II to assess depression levels. Reports of maltreatment were common in patients with BED (82%), NES (79%), and OC (71%). The BED group reported significantly more forms of maltreatment above clinical cut-points (2.4) than the OC (1.4) group bu

Emotion Regulation as a Predictor of Body Dissatisfaction in Individuals With Eating Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Body dissatisfaction (BD) plays a key role in the development and maintenance of eating disorders (EDs). BD might be influenced by emotion regulation. The maladaptive emotion regulation strategy suppression, aimed at inhibiting emotional responses, may increase BD by intensifying negative body-related affect. Adaptive strategies like cognitive reappraisal, involving the reinterpretation of emotional situations, may reduce BD by reshaping emotional responses to body-related cues. This study explored whether these strategies predicted BD at two follow-up waves, one after 7-11 months a

Facial Emotion Recognition Abilities in Women Experiencing Eating Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Impairments in facial emotion recognition are an underlying factor of deficits in emotion regulation and interpersonal difficulties in mental disorders and are evident in eating disorders (EDs). METHODS: We used a computerized psychophysical paradigm to manipulate parametrically the quantity of signal in facial expressions of emotion (QUEST threshold seeking algorithm). This was used to measure emotion recognition in 308 adult women (anorexia nervosa [n = 61], bulimia nervosa [n = 58], healthy controls [n = 130], and mixed mental disorders [mixed, n = 59]). The M (SD) age was 22.84

Construct validity of the emotional eating scale adapted for children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Emotional eating, defined as eating in response to a range of negative emotions, is common in youths. Yet, there are few easily administered and well-validated methods to assess emotional eating in pediatric populations. OBJECTIVE: The current study tested the construct validity of the Emotional Eating Scale (EES) Adapted for Children and Adolescents (EES-C) by examining its relationship to observed emotional eating at laboratory test meals. METHOD: A total of 151 youths (8-18 years) participated in two multi-item lunch buffet meals on separate days. They ate ad libitum after bei
