Hymen reconstruction as pragmatic empowerment? Results of a qualitative study from Tunisia.

Hymen reconstruction surgery (HR), while ethically controversial, is now available in many countries. Little clinical evidence and hardly any surgical standards support the intervention. Nearly as scarce is social science research exploring women's motivations for the intervention, and health care professionals' justifications for its provision. In order to better understand decision-making processes, we conducted semi-structured interviews in metropolitan Tunis, in 2009, with six women seeking the procedure, four friends who supported such women, four physicians who perform the operation, and

Differences in empowerment and quality of life among parents of children with food allergy.

BACKGROUND: Living with food allergy has been found to adversely affect quality of life. Previous studies of the psychosocial impact of food allergy on caregivers have focused on mothers. OBJECTIVE: To describe differences in food allergy-related quality of life (FAQOL) and empowerment of mothers and fathers of a large cohort of children with food allergy. METHODS: Eight hundred seventy-six families of children with food allergy were studied. Food allergy was defined by stringent criteria, including reaction history, skin prick testing, and specific IgE. Parental empowerment and FAQOL were a

The patient's view of recovery: an emerging tool for empowerment through self-knowledge.

PURPOSE: To introduce Recovery Preference Exploration (RPE) as a new technique for studying the personal significance of being able to perform one type of functional activity over others. To determine if patients' concepts of function reflect the ADL, sphincter management, mobility and cognition (ASMC) domains established through the factor analyses of observed patient performance. METHODS: RPE involves an adapted card sort procedure. Patients sorted 18 cards each listing a single functional skill such as eating, walking, and memory into subjectively meaningful groups of activities based on h

Exploring the empowerment process in hip arthroplasty patients: Insights from rehabilitation nursing.

BACKGROUND: Population ageing has led to an increased incidence of hip osteoarthritis, a condition that frequently requires surgical intervention to restore functionality and relieve pain. Hip Arthroplasty (HA) constitutes a major therapeutic option; however, it may entail physical and emotional repercussions for individuals undergoing this procedure. In this context, individualized follow-up care is essential, with the Rehabilitation Nurse Specialist (RNS) assuming a central role in promoting autonomy and functional recovery. OBJECTIVE: To analyze Rehabilitation nurses' perceptions of the em

Thrombocytopenia Absent Radius (TAR)-Syndrome: From Current Genetics to Patient Self-Empowerment.

Thrombocytopenia absent radius (TAR) syndrome is a rare form of hereditary thrombocytopenia associated with a bilateral radial aplasia. TAR syndrome is genetically defined by the combination of a microdeletion on chromosome 1 which includes the gene RBM8A, and a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the second RBM8A allele. While most patients with TAR syndrome harbor a SNP in either the 5' UTR region or in intron 1 of RBM8A, further SNPs associated with TAR syndrome are still being identified. Here, we report on the current understanding of the genetic basis, diagnosis, and therapy of TAR s

Female sex workers' empowerment strategies amid HIV-related socioeconomic vulnerabilities in Cameroon.

Research has consistently demonstrated that female sex workers use a variety of empowerment strategies to protect one another and their families. This study examines the strategies Cameroonian sex workers employ to do so. In-depth interviews and focus-group discussions were conducted with 100 sex workers. Coded texts were analysed for recurring themes. Sex workers reported being concerned with physical violence and sexual assault and demands from authorities for bribes to avoid fines and/or imprisonment. Women described strategies such as 'looking out for' each other when faced with security t

Relational consent as protection and empowerment: An ethical framework for mothers and youth in IPV.

BACKGROUND: In counseling practice, including work with mothers and children exposed to intimate partner violence (CEIPV), consent processes are sometimes operationalized primarily through forms and signatures. When consent is handled in this way, counseling interactions may inadvertently reflect relational patterns linked to abuse, especially if the impacts of trauma, coercion, and mistrust are not addressed with active support for choice, pacing, and comprehension. OBJECTIVE: This article presents relational consent as a trauma-informed, ethically grounded framework that views consent as an

Empowerment Centric Psychosocial Strategies in Cleft Lip and Palate: A New Paradigm.

The aim of this article is to offer a critical look at existing cleft care models and to advocate a move toward cleft care that is more inclusive of patient and family needs. Although conventional cleft care is predominantly clinical, a more holistic and comprehensive perspective toward patients and their caregivers tends to be overlooked. The discussed empowerment-based model furnishes a person-centered approach intended to upgrade the long-term prognosis and well-being of individuals with cleft and their families, as well as address their psychosocial needs.

Women's reproductive health in the aftermath of natural disasters in Bangladesh: Prospects for empowerment.

In this study, the authors examine the effect of Cyclone Sidr in 2007 on selected aspects of women's reproductive decision-making in Bangladesh. We used Person in Environment theories to model the effect of cyclone Sidr on the reasons for non-contraception among women who did not want a child. The difference-in-difference approach was used as a research design using Bangladesh Demographic and Health Surveys of 2004 and 2011 to test a model of reasons for non-contraception among a subsample of women who did not want a child. Our results indicated that women experienced fewer social controls on

Exploring the Experiences of Regional and Rural Revictimized Women in a Group Empowerment Program.

Sexual revictimization can have a negative impact on many facets of women's wellbeing, yet limited evidence exists regarding specific interventions that support healing and the reduction of further revictimization. This paper will explore regional and rural women's experience of a group-based empowerment program, the Shark Cage program, in Victoria, Australia. The "Shark Cage" program aims to address revictimization by empowering women and girls to build personal boundaries and assertiveness within the context of gender equality and human rights. Data were collected via participant observation

Community Empowerment and Mentality as a Treatment in Treatment-Resistant Trichotillomania: A Case Report.

Trichotillomania, a psycho-dermatologic disorder defined by self-inflicted often noticeable hair loss through hair-pulling, is difficult to manage and treat. Its etiology is multifactorial and frequently is complicated by comorbid conditions like anxiety and depression. Evidence-based treatment is limited but options involve a combination of pharmacotherapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), habit reversal training (HRT), and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). Many individuals still struggle with the condition despite therapy efforts. This is the case of a 24-year-old female who has

A Nationwide Survey on Patient Empowerment in Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Germany.

BACKGROUND: The incidence/prevalence of pediatric inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is increasing. IBD places a significant burden on young patients during important developmental stages and affects their families. Children and adolescents with IBD require increased support from health care services. However, little is known about the additional support needed and how to provide it. Therefore, a large survey was conducted with a focus on patient empowerment. METHODS: For the anonymous survey, called CEDNA, a patient questionnaire for adolescents with IBD and a questionnaire for parents of chil

Changes in empowerment and anxiety of patients and parents during genetic counselling for epilepsy.

Genetic testing and counselling are increasingly important in epilepsy care, aiming at finding a diagnosis, understanding aetiology and improving treatment and outcome. The psychological impact of genetic counselling from patients' or parents' perspectives is, however, unknown. We studied the counselee-reported outcome of genetic counselling before and after genetic testing for epilepsy by evaluating empowerment - a key outcome goal of counselling reflecting cognitive, decisional and behavioural control, emotional regulation and hope - and anxiety. We asked patients or their parents (for those

Developing a Mobile App for Concussion to aid Patient Empowerment and Symptom Management.

Despite the high prevalence of concussions each year in Canada, access to consistent and science-based information on how to self-manage these injuries remains a significant hurdle for many patients. Currently, available mobile applications (apps) focus mainly on supporting patients with sports-related concussions, although falls account for more traumatic brain injuries (TBI) than sports-related TBI's in Alberta. Patients from a broader demographic may be limited from accessing information on how to correctly manage and track their symptoms as they feel that currently available resources are

Level of empowerment and decision-making style of women with epilepsy in childbirth age.

OBJECTIVES: This research investigates level of empowerment, decisional skills, and the perceived relationship with the clinician, of women in childbirth age, also in relationship with clinical variables such as epilepsy type, seizure frequency, therapy, and pregnancy status. In particular, as concerning therapy, we were interested in women who take valproic acid (VPA), for its specific balance of risks and benefits, especially in pregnant women. METHODS: The sample is composed of 60 women with epilepsy (6 were excluded), who underwent a standardized clinical protocol for assessment of level

Empowerment of Parents of Children With Craniosynostosis by Objective Scoring of Patient Information Websites.

INTRODUCTION: Parental anxiety may be caused by inappropriate information on the world wide web regarding craniosynostosis. The aim of this study was to study the correlation between the first 100 websites ranked on the Google search engine and those ranked based on objective scoring with patient information scoring tool. The results of these findings can then be used to recommend websites based on the quality of information that may not initially appear first on a search engine. METHODS: The DISCERN patient information scoring tool was chosen as a scientific way of measuring the quality of p

Patterns of runaway behavior within a larger systems context: the road to empowerment.

Runaway behavior is a common problem in residential treatment settings for youth. This paper looked at Orten and Soll's runaway typology and Homer's conceptualization of runaways as "running from" or "running to" something and expanded the context to include interactions with family and professionals. A case study and a survey of nine adolescent runaways from a residential setting were used to explore several hypotheses. A discussion of the results and practical applications illustrated ways to empower therapists and other professionals to deal with runaways more effectively.
