Protection against myocardial ischaemia by prior haemodilution with fluorocarbon emulsions.

The possible prophylactic effects of Fluosol-DA 20% (FDA) haemodilution against myocardial hypoxia were studied in two groups of anaesthetized immature pigs. Precalibrated 200-micron diameter oxygen microelectrodes were inserted to the myocardium of the left ventricle. One group of animals was haemodiluted with FDA and both groups received 100% oxygen (plus halothane). The lower one-third of the left anterior descending coronary artery was occluded; this caused no significant cardiovascular changes. Analysis from the microelectrodes in the most hypoxic areas of the myocardium revealed signific

Emulsion characteristics, chemical and textural properties of meat systems produced with double emulsions as beef fat replacers.

In recent years, double emulsions are stated to have a promising potential in low-fat food production, however, there are very few studies on their possible applications in meat matrices. We aimed to investigate the quality of beef emulsion systems in which beef fat was totally replaced by double emulsions (W1/O/W2) prepared with olive oil and sodium caseinate (SC) by two-step emulsification procedure. Incorporation of W1/O/W2 emulsion resulted in reduced lipid, increased protein content, and modified fatty acid composition. W1/O/W2 emulsion treatments had lower jelly and fat separation, highe

Lignocellulose processing-induced pH-responsive Pickering emulsions for curcumin delivery.

The development of pH-responsive Pickering emulsions is of critical importance for delivery systems that do not involve synthetic ligands or chemical modifications, which helps to preserve the preservation of biomaterial safety. Lignocellulose derived colloidal particles (LCPs) with in-situ generated carboxyl groups were prepared from bougainvillea spectabilis stems via an acid/alkali biorefining process. The obtained LCPs exhibited pH-responsive emulsifying behavior, stabilizing high-internal-phase Pickering emulsions (HIPPEs) under alkaline conditions and undergoing controlled demulsificatio

Glycosylated Beta-Lactoglobulin emulsions stabilize curcumin and suppress fruit spoilage.

To overcome the poor stability, low water solubility, and insufficient bioavailability of curcumin, this study utilized bioactive beta-glucan (β-glucan) and nutrient-rich beta-lactoglobulin (β-lactoglobulin, BLG) as raw materials through glycosylation to regulate the structure and functional properties of proteins, and by using their distinct interactions, emulsions with different interfacial structures were constructed for curcumin encapsulation. The physicochemical properties, stability, antioxidant capacity, antibacterial activity, and fruit preservation performance of different emulsions w

Pickering emulsions stabilized by microgels: Three regimes of surface coverage.

Oil-in-water Pickering emulsions can be stabilized by poly-N-Isopropylacrylamide based microgels that adsorb, deform and entangle at the droplets interface. The surface coverage Γemulsion, defined as the mass of microgels per unit interfacial area, likely plays a key role in the emulsion properties as stability and responsiveness. The objective of the present study is to link Γemulsion to the concentration of microgels used during the emulsification process. Γemulsion was monitored by combining droplet size analysis, UV-visible quantification of non-adsorbed microgels and Cryo-SEM visualizatio

Stability, Photoinduced Destabilization, and Photoswitchability of Azo-CTAB-Based Emulsions.

Stimuli-induced interfacial destabilization of oil-water emulsions is an attractive approach for emulsion processing, as it typically requires less energy input than conventional bulk manipulation methods. In this work, we demonstrate the photoinduced destabilization and reconstruction of n-decane-in-water emulsions that were rendered highly stable (>45 days) with the help of an azobenzene-containing cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (Azo-CTAB) surfactant. Phase separation was induced easily in Azo-CTAB stabilized emulsions by the illumination of ultraviolet (UV) light, which activates photoisome

Fundamentals and applications of particle stabilized emulsions in cosmetic formulations.

The cosmetic industry is one of the fastest growing industrial sectors that is constantly evolving by absorbing new technologies and incorporating innovative yet sustainable products. Cosmetic products are comprised of diverse formulations such as skin care, color cosmetics, hair care, makeup, body care products. Traditionally, cosmetic emulsions are stabilized using surfactants or polymers. Due to its adverse effects on environment, cytotoxicity effects, numerous health hazards, there is a strong drive to shift towards sustainable and surfactant free emulsions. With increasing consumer demand

Electrochemistry of single droplets of inverse (water-in-oil) emulsions.

We demonstrate the feasibility of electrochemically detecting individual water droplets dispersed in an oil phase (inverse emulsions) via the use of a redox probe confined in the droplet phase. The water droplets were tagged with potassium ferrocyanide, and were injected into an electrolyte cyclohexene/dichloromethane oil solution. Via simple cyclic voltammetry scans it is shown that single water droplets from a water-in-oil emulsion can be detected provided that rapid anion transfer from the oil to the water phase maintains electro-neutrality in the droplet.

That's a Phat Antidote: Intravenous Fat Emulsions and Toxicological Emergencies.

Health care providers in the emergency department (ED) frequently find themselves caring for patients who may have overdosed on a medication(s) or other toxic substance. These patients can prove to be a challenge, as providers must try to determine the substance(s) involved so that the appropriate treatment can be initiated. For those patients who are hemodynamically unstable upon presentation, it is important to note that supportive care is of the utmost importance, as there are few substances that have antidotes available. In these situations, lipid emulsion can be considered. This is especi

Fatty acids, lipid emulsions and the immune and inflammatory systems.

Fatty acids modulate the responses of cells of the immune system. Inflammatory and immune responses in patients receiving parenteral nutrition may be modulated by the type of lipid used, which may influence clinical outcomes. Lipid emulsions based solely upon soybean oil may not be optimal because of the role of n-6 fatty acids in promoting inflammation and suppressing immune responses. Lipid emulsions with soybean oil in various combinations with medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), olive oil and fish oil are available. Some early studies have suggested better immune function with MCT-soybean o

Improving cabazitaxel chemical stability in parenteral lipid emulsions using cholesterol.

Intravenous lipid emulsions of cabazitaxel (CLEs) with a high stability were prepared by adding cholesterol (CH) to provide a new and more suitable delivery system for its administration. The factors affecting CLEs, such as the solubility of cabazitaxel in various oils, different kinds of lecithin, pH, different types of oil phases, and different concentrations of lipoid E80®, CH and poloxamer 188 were investigated systematically. The degradation of cabazitaxel in aqueous solution and lipid emulsion both followed pseudo first-order kinetics. A degradation mechanism was suggested by the U-shape

Protective effect of polysaccharides on the stability of parenteral emulsions.

The main purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of two polysaccharides (dextran, hydroxyethyl starch) on the stability of parenteral emulsions. All parenteral emulsions were prepared by high-pressure homogenization. The influence of polysaccharides concentration was studied. The stabilities of autoclaving sterilization, centrifugation and freeze-thawing process were investigated extensively. Following the addition of polysaccharides, the stabilities of the parenteral emulsions were improved. A high-concentration polysaccharides solution (13%, w/v) produced better protection than

Intravenous lipid emulsion - rescued at LAST.

The accidental overdose of local anaesthetics may prove fatal. The commonly used amide local anaesthetics have varying adverse effects on the myocardium and beyond a certain dose all are capable of causing death. Local anaesthetics are the most frequently used drugs in dentistry and although uncommon, local anaesthetic systemic toxicity (LAST) accounts for a high proportion of mortalities in the dental office, with local anaesthetic-induced cardiac arrest particularly resistant to standard resuscitation methods. Over the last decade there has been convincing evidence of using intravenous lipid

Detoxifying emulsion for overdosed aspirin intoxication.

Aspirin overdose could lead to intoxication, with the clinical manifestations of vomit, pulmonary edema and severe dyspnea. Stomach washing, emetics and activated charcoal are the common treatments with a limited efficiency for the intoxication. In this study, an active emulsion for aspirin intoxication was prepared with the detoxifying efficiency of 100% in less than 15 min, with the conditions of dodecane used as the oil phase, 8% Abil EM90 as the surfactant and 0.1 mol/L sodium hydroxide as the inner aqueous phase in a volume ratio of 2 between internal aqueous phase and the oil phase.

Emulsion and activated carbon in cancer chemotherapy.

Based on a lipid-absorbing ability of lymphatic capillaries, a fat emulsion containing anticancer agents was applied to selectively deliver more increasing amounts of anticancer agents into regional lymph nodes. The emulsions, in which the drug solution is contained as the innermost phase or as oily soluble drug, yield high drug concentrations in the lymphatic system. Clinical trial of the emulsion method was carried out preoperatively for 180 patients with stomach cancer. As a result, the emulsion enhanced the chemotherapeutic effect of the anticancer agent on lymph node metastasis. About a 2
