Burden of Tick-Borne Encephalitis, Sweden.

In recent decades, the incidence of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) in Sweden has increased. To calculate the burden of disease over a 17-year period, we analyzed data from the Swedish National Health Data Register for TBE cases diagnosed during 1998-2014. We compared healthcare use and sick leave associated with 2,429 persons with TBE with a referent cohort of 7,287 persons without TBE. Patients with TBE were hospitalized for significantly more days during the first year after disease onset (11.5 vs. 1.1 days), logged more specialist outpatient visits (3.6 vs. 1.2 visits), and logged more sick

[Thalamic lesion in tick-borne encephalitis].

Signal enhancement on T2-weighted images of the thalamus on one or both sides by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is among the most frequently observed neuroradiological findings in patients with acute tick-borne encephalitis. The article presents a clinical case of a patient who had an encephalo-polyoencephalomyelitic form of tick-borne encephalitis with MRI picture of a typical bilateral thalamic lesion. Such changes according to neuroimaging studies may have a clinical differential-diagnostic value, and the knowledge of these features by neuroradiologists and neurologists will contribute to

Tick-Borne Encephalitis Virus, United Kingdom.

During February 2018-January 2019, we conducted large-scale surveillance for the presence and prevalence of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) and louping ill virus (LIV) in sentinel animals and ticks in the United Kingdom. Serum was collected from 1,309 deer culled across England and Scotland. Overall, 4% of samples were ELISA-positive for the TBEV serocomplex. A focus in the Thetford Forest area had the highest proportion (47.7%) of seropositive samples. Ticks collected from culled deer within seropositive regions were tested for viral RNA; 5 of 2,041 ticks tested positive by LIV/TBEV real

Tick-borne Encephalitis: Stroke-like Presentation.

Tick-borne encephalitis, caused by the tick-borne virus (TBEV), is endemic in central, eastern, and northern Europe eastwards through Russian Siberia and China. For the year 2009, the highest incidence in Scandinavian countries was in Sweden. The clinical symptoms have a wide spectrum. We report a unique case of clinical symptoms and radiological findings compatible with a stroke-like inflammatory lesion in the thalamus, suggesting microangiopathy from TBEV. Our case shows that TBEV could be a possible cause of stroke-like lesions.

Predictability of tick-borne encephalitis fluctuations.

Tick-borne encephalitis is a serious arboviral infection with unstable dynamics and profound inter-annual fluctuations in case numbers. A dependable predictive model has been sought since the discovery of the disease. The present study demonstrates that four superimposed cycles, approximately 2·4, 3, 5·4, and 10·4 years long, can account for three-fifths of the variation in the disease fluctuations over central Europe. Using harmonic regression, these cycles can be projected into the future, yielding forecasts of sufficient accuracy for up to 4 years ahead. For the years 2016-2018, this model

Tick-Borne Encephalitis in Sheep, Romania.

Little is known about the occurrence of tick-borne encephalitis in Romania. Sheep are an infection source for humans and are useful sentinels for risk analysis. We demonstrate high antibody prevalence (15.02%) among sheep used as sentinels for this disease in 80% of the tested localities in 5 counties of northwestern Romania.

[Neuroborreliosis, tick-borne encephalitis and neurosyphilis].

Infections affecting frequently the nervous system include Lyme disease, tick-borne encephalitis and syphilis. These three most dreaded neuro-infectious diseases observed in Switzerland are discussed, based on diagnostic criteria, screening testing, and treatments modalities. Neuroborreliosis and neurosyphilis are bacterial infectious diseases treatable by antibiotics, whereas the treatment of tick-borne encephalitis, a viral disease, is only based on preventive vaccination.

Vaccines for preventing tick-borne encephalitis.

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a disease of the central nervous system caused by a tick-borne viral infection. TBE can lead to severe neurological syndromes such as meningitis, meningoencephalitis, and meningoencephalomyelitis, which can result in death. There is no treatment, and prevention with the vaccine is the only intervention currently available. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate vaccines for preventing TBE in terms of effectiveness and adverse effects. SEARCH STRATEGY: In June 2008, we searched the Cochrane Infectious Diseases Group Specialized Register, CENTRAL (The Cochrane Lib

Tick-borne encephalitis in mainland China.

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus is one of the most important flavivirus infections of the central nervous system in Europe and Russia, with 12,000 estimated human cases per year. At present, epidemiology is extensively analyzed in many regions of Europe and Russia, with less activity in east and southeast Asia. For China, surveillance on TBE is not institutionalized, and data are incomplete and not appropriately communicated. This review summarizes the current knowledge on TBE in China and shows that foci of the virus are mostly located in the northern part of China.

Tick-borne encephalitis in eastern France.

Each y a few cases of TBE infection are described in Alsace, France which lies at the occidental limit of the endemic zone of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE). Hence we carried out a retrospective epidemiological and clinical study of TBE infection in Alsace. Data were collected from serological results sent to the Institut de Virologie (Université Louis Pasteur) in Strasbourg. All samples positive for specific IgM against TBE were retained. The physician in charge of each patient was asked to provide clinical, epidemiological and biological data and with his agreement the medical file was referr

[Tick borne encephalitis and enviromental changes].

Currently observed markedly increased incidence of various tick borne diseases in many parts of Europe is due to documented climatic changes as well anthropogenic influence on habitat structure. One of the analyzed factors is tendency to increase of the spring temperatures, especially in the third decade of the April. Such conditions (spring temperatures above 7-10 degrees C) let the nymphs and larvae of Ixodes ricinus to feed simultaneously on rodents. This increases the risk of infection of Ixodes ricinus with TBE virus, so dangerous for humans.

[Prevention of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE)].

Active immunization is the only reliable means of preventing TBE. Evidence suggests that effectiveness is greater than 95%. Breakthrough infections in fully immunized individuals, however, do occur. Recent data indicate that the duration of protection following basic immunization is substantially longer than previously appreciated. The vast majority of vaccinees are still seropositive > or = 8 years after the last dose. Thus, the current practice of administering booster doses every 3 years is a topic of intense debate. Until it is resolved, patients can be offered the determination of a serum

Biology of tick-borne encephalitis virus.

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus is an important human pathogen belonging to the genus Flavivirus within the family Flaviviridae. The genome of the TBE virus is a single-stranded RNA (ssRNA) molecule of positive polarity encoding all the viral proteins within a single open reading frame (ORF). TBE virus shares common physical and genetic characteristic of the flavivirus genus. Two subtypes of the TBE virus have been described: (1) European, endemic in many parts of Europe and transmitted by Ixodes ricinus ticks, and (2) Far Eastern (Russian spring summer encephalitis (RSSE) virus), endemic
