Encephalitozoon hellem is a unicellular, obligate intracellular microsporidian species detected and isolated in HIV-infected patients presenting with keratoconjunctivitis, sinusitis, tracheobronchitis, nephritis, cystitis, and disseminated infection. A total of 24 monoclonal antibodies were produced against E. hellem and characterized. The monoclonal antibodies were of the immunoglobulin (Ig) G and Ig M subclasses, and, when incorporated into indirect immunofluorescence and immunoblotting assays, reacted against 13 isolates of E. hellem originating from three geographic regions. These monoclon

Rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) are frequently reared for meat production in China. The aim of this study was to assess the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii and Encephalitozoon cuniculi, and risk factors of infection in domestic rabbits raised in Henan province, central China. 1,213 serum samples of domestic rabbits were collected and tested for anti-T. gondii and anti-E. cuniculi antibodies using a modified agglutination test (MAT) and an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), respectively. The serum positive rates of T. gondii and E. cuniculi were 128/1,213 (10.55%) and 235/1,213 (19.

The breeding of domestic rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) for human consumption has a long tradition mainly in European and Asian countries. Infections that can affect the production of meat or even be transmitted from animals to humans are important to monitor, especially for public health reasons as well as for their impact on animals health. This study aimed to collect sera from rabbits bred in different conditions and test the presence of Toxoplasma gondii and Encephalitozoon cuniculi antibodies. Whether infections were active or latent was assessed by determining the occurrence of IgM or Ig

Encephalitozoon cuniculi is an obligate intracellular microsporidian parasite that infects a wide range of mammalian hosts. The present study investigated the prevalence of E. cuniculi in different animal hosts from different provinces of Egypt (Alexandria, Behera, and Assuit) using serological (IFAT and ELISA) and molecular (PCR) assays. A total of 324 serum and 274 urine samples were collected from seven different species of animals (cattle, buffaloes, sheep, goat, rabbit, dog, and rat). The results of serological examination confirmed the occurrence of antibodies against E. cuniculi in 38.9

Encephalitozoon intestinalis is a recently described microsporidian which causes intestinal and disseminated infections in severely immunocompromised patients with AIDS. Preliminary data suggest that albendazole can be an effective therapy for patients with E. intestinalis infection. However, relapses have been reported following treatment in some cases. These results were based upon examination of cytologic, biopsy, or stool samples with an inherent sampling bias. This report documents the first postmortem evaluation of a patient with E. intestinalis infection treated with albendazole. Antemo

Encephalitozoon intestinalis is a species of microsporidia that causes serious health problems, especially in immunocompromised individuals. The drug of choice for treatment today is albendazole. However, partial effects, resistance, and serious side effects are reported. Recently, vinpocetine has become a safe drug that is being investigated for the treatment of various diseases. In this study, the anti-microsporidial efficacies of vinpocetine, albendazole, and vinpocetine- albendazole combination, and how these combinations affected pathogen-induced tissue damage were assessed. In the study,

Microsporidia are very primitive, eukaryotic, obligate, intracellular, protozoan parasites. Encephalitozoon cuniculi, a microsporidian originally described from a rabbit infection, has been described in humans as well as in many species of laboratory animals. We report the detection of E. cuniculi by Western blotting in a rabbit with torticollis that was obtained from an Encephalitozoon-free colony. Cross-reactivity of this serum was observed with antigens prepared from several genera of microsporidia. Identical Western blotting patterns were obtained with sera obtained from a rabbit immunized

OBJECTIVE: Microsporidian Encephalitozoon cuniculi has been recognized as an opportunistic pathogen in immunosuppressed individuals, such as AIDS patients. The objective of the study was to develop pharmacologically immunosuppressed animals as a model of the natural occurring E. cuniculi infection.
METHODS: Distinct groups of adult Balb-C mice were immunosuppressed with different doses of dexamethasone (Dx, 3 or 5 mg/kg/day, intraperitoneal route - IP) and inoculated with E. cuniculi spores by IP route intraperitoneally. Control groups (inoculated animals but non-immunosuppressed and non- ino

There recently have been several reports of microsporidial keratoconjunctivitis caused by the organism Encephalitozoon hellem. However, treatment of this infection has been largely ineffective. We report a case of a 35-year-old Hispanic woman with AIDS and E. hellem keratoconjunctivitis confirmed with light, electron, and immunofluorescence microscopy that resolved promptly with topical fumagillin, a crystalline antibiotic with proven efficacy against Encephalitozoon species. No corneal or systemic toxicities were noted using the dosage and preparation employed (10 mg/ml suspension in balanced

Encephalitozoon hellem is a recently described microsporidian associated with an expanding spectrum of clinical presentations in patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). It is morphologically similar to Encephalitozoon cuniculi, a microsporidian infection of mammals and some avians, and their differentiation rests on biochemical and antigenic analyses. This report describes a patient previously diagnosed with keratoconjunctivitis due to E hellem who subsequently was found to have respiratory tract microsporidiosis by sputum cytology. He subsequently developed pulmonary symp

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of microsporidiosis in the general population, or within specific groups of individuals/patients, is largely underestimated. The absence of specific seroprevalence tools limits knowledge of the epidemiology of these opportunistic pathogens, although known since the 1980s. Since microsporidia hijack the machinery of its host cell and certain species multiply within intestinal cells, a potential link between the parasite and colorectal cancer (CRC) has been suggested.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: To explore a potential epidemiological link between microsporidia and

Here, we have investigated the possible effect of B-1 cells on the activity of peritoneal macrophages in E. cuniculi infection. In the presence of B-1 cells, peritoneal macrophages had an M1 profile with showed increased phagocytic capacity and index, associated with the intense microbicidal activity and a higher percentage of apoptotic death. The absence of B-1 cells was associated with a predominance of the M2 macrophages, reduced phagocytic capacity and index and microbicidal activity, increased pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines production, and higher percentual of necrosis d

Microsporidian spores were developed from cells which were grown in vitro from a human liver lesion which was due to larval Echinococcus multilocularis. The microsporidian spores developed in the same fashion as an Encephalitozoon cuniculi. The Encephalitozoon-like spores were completely separated on Percoll gradients. The separated spores contained DNA capable of amplification by two different primer sets designed for the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of E. multilocularis DNA. However, the cell DNA from which microsporidium developed was thoroughly insensitive to the PCR using the E. multil

BACKGROUND: Among patients with hip joint endoprosthesis, periprosthetic osteolysis is the most common complication following primary arthroplasty, and subsequent implant loosening is the leading cause of arthroplasty revision. Causes of stability loss, though not always evident, can be mechanical, allergic, or infectious (bacterial and fungal agents) in nature. Microsporidia, widespread opportunistic fungal pathogens that infect most human tissues, are a potential infectious cause of stability loss. Infections caused by Encephalitozoon species-one of the most common microsporidial pathogens i

Within the last several years, the protozoan parasites Cyclospora cayetanensis, Cryptosporidium parvum, and microsporidia have become recognized as important, rapidly emerging human pathogens in immunocompromised and immunocompetent individuals. Since the early 1990s, many of the reported outbreaks of enteric illness caused by these microorganisms have been attributed to food- and water-borne contamination. Many inherent obstacles affect the success of current surveillance and detection methods used to monitor and control levels of contamination by these pathogens. Unlike methods that incorpor

Microsporidia cause opportunistic infections in AIDS patients and commonly infect laboratory animals, as well. Euthymic C57B1/6 mice experimentally infected with intraperitoneal injections of 1 x 10(6) Encephalitozoon cuniculi Levaditi, Nicolau et Schoen, 1923, Encephalitozoon hellem Didier et al., 1991, or Nosema corneum Shadduck et al., 1990 displayed no clinical signs of disease. Athymic mice, however, developed ascites and died 8-16 days after inoculation with N. corneum, 21-25 days after inoculation with E. cuniculi, and 34-37 days after inoculation with E. hellem. All athymic mice displa

Microsporidia are ubiquitous obligate eukaryotic intracellular parasites that are now felt to be more akin to degenerate fungi than to protozoa. Microsporidia can be highly pathogenic, causing a broad range of symptoms in humans, especially individuals who are immunocompromised. The vast majority of human cases of microsporidiosis have been reported during the past 20 years, in patients with HIV/AIDS, while only relatively rare cases have been described in immunocompetent individuals. However, microsporidia infections are being increasingly reported in patients following solid-organ transplana

Microsporidia are obligate intracellular protozoan parasites that can cause opportunistic infections in AIDS patients. Species from five genera of microsporidia are presently known to infect man. One species, Septata intestinalis originally was detected in stool specimens of individuals with chronic diarrhea and subsequently was found to disseminate to the kidneys, lungs, and nasal sinuses. This organism has since been reclassified as Encephalitozoon and in this study, we report the culture of Encephalitozoon intestinalis from a bronchoalveolar lavage specimen and a nasal mucus aspirate of two

We found Encephalitozoon-like organisms in an in vitro culture of a human liver lesion which was due to larval Echinococcus multilocularis. The organisms developed in the same fashion as an Encephalitozoon cuniculi. The spores that developed in parasitophorous vacuoles were 2.0-2.6 x 1.1-1.5 microns; each contained a single nucleus and 4-5 polar tubule coils, closely resembling E. cuniculi in its ultrastructure. Mature spores were collected from the supernatants by the use of Percoll centrifugation resulting in the banding of the spores on continuous gradients. We prepared three sorts of spore
