Enchondromatosis of the hand in the context of the Oilier disease is an infrequent pathologie associated with a high rate of malignancy. In this work, we present a case with multiple enchondromas affecting mainly the fourth and fifth rays of the hand, and with multiple ipsilateral lesions in the foot, sacroiliac joint and iliac bone. This patient is, in addition, an unusual case for a long-term progression (28 years), serious deforming appearance and for the double malignant degeneration to chondrosarcoma of the affected fingers. Clinical features, tumor factors, criterion of diagnosis and pro

Among patients with enchondromatosis, those with Ollier's disease are usually considered to be at a lower risk for extra-osseous malignancy than those with Maffucci's disease. However, several reports suggest that Ollier's disease may also be associated with gliomas. We report here the youngest patient in the literature (16 years) to be detected with a brain tumor and Ollier's disease. This is also the first case with diffuse brain stem involvement. Thus, counselling of patients with Ollier's disease may become more difficult than initially thought.

The work deals with 8 patients suffering from multiple enchondromatosis confirmed by histological investigation. Six of them showed typical for Ollier's disease unilateral localization. The remaining two in spite of both sides changes demonstrated severer deformations on one of them. The most common complications of enchondromatosis and the aims of operative treatment are described. In the case of sarcomatous degeneration adequate surgery is indicated.

Data is presented of the post-mortem macroscopic and microscopic examination of two Toy Poodles with multiple enchondromatosis (Ollier syndrome). In both animals opening and maturation disorders of the growth plates were found in several skeletal locations. Due to the dogs' age difference at necropsy (14 and 4 months), some variation was also present in occurrence and appearance of primary and secondary alterations, which gave rise to some conclusions regarding development and progression of the disease. Chondrodysplasia, a characteristic of several breeds, is considered to be the essential fa

Multiple enchondromatosis (Ollier's disease) is a nonhereditary disease characterized by multiple central (medullary) cartilaginous bone tumors of unknown pathogenesis. It usually involves the extremities with a unilateral predominance, and sarcomatous transformation may occur. We report an autopsy-based genetic study of a 34-year-old man presenting in early adolescence with multiple enchondromas of the extremities, predominantly left-sided, compatible with Ollier's disease. Twelve years after presentation, malignant transformation to a high grade chondrosarcoma occurred in a tibial enchondrom

The columnar cartilage pattern is characterized by parallel aligned cartilage tissue columns related to the physis without matrix calcification separated by the surrounding osseous tissue. Usually, it is seen in patients with multiple enchondromas. The objective of this study was to elucidate the clinical and radiological features of this rare radiological pattern in the physis, which remains unfamiliar to most physician. We retrospectively evaluated the clinical features and imaging findings of 15 patients (9 men and 6 women) who have a columnar pattern with varied spectrum of enchondromatosi

Spindle cell hemangioma is a rare vascular tumor that most frequently involves the distal extremities, especially the hand. We report a case of spindle cell hemangiomatosis of the vulva in an 18-year-old woman with Maffucci's syndrome, the first report of such a case, to the best of our knowledge. The vascular lesions, present from the age of 2, were located in the right olecranon, the third left toe, and the vulva. Spindle cell hemangiomas are either benign neoplasms or hamartomatous malformations.

Chondrosarcomas constitute the second-most-frequent malignant bone tumors, representing about 10% of all malignant bone tumors. The most frequent localizations comprise the trunk, pelvis and limbs. Metastatic disease usually occurs in the lung; metastases to other localizations are seen occasionally. Manifestation in the head and neck area, either as primary tumor or metastasis, is very rare. A case of parotid gland metastasis in multiple enchondromatosis secondary chondrosarcoma (CHOSA) G-III of the left femoral bone is presented. A 79-year-old male patient reported to our clinic with a rapid

Generalized enchondromatosis, of which Ollier disease is the most common type, is a rare bone dysplasia characterized by multiple intraosseous tumors near growth-plate cartilage. These cartilaginous tumors have a propensity to transform into chondrosarcomas. Enchondromas of the skull base are exceedingly rare. We present the case of a patient with generalized enchondromatosis who developed a large enchondroma of the clivus, and we discuss the clinical presentation and potential treatments for this entity.

Multiple enchondromatosis (Ollier Disease) is characterized by the presence of enchondromas predominantly affecting long and flat bones, and only exceptionally involving cranial bones. The aim of this study is to highlight the extreme rarity of bilateral hand involvement in Ollier disease, occurring simultaneously with other unusual localizations - such as the scapula - and exceedingly rare ones, such as the vomer bone. Furthermore, the study emphasizes the psychological impact of this pathology and the need for appropriate psychological and psychiatric support for affected patients. A systema

There are multiple forms of enchondromatosis with Ollier's and Maffucci's being the most prevalent types. Limb length discrepancy is a common problem in patients with Ollier's and Maffucci's enchondromatosis. There are multiple reports about lengthening bones in patients with enchondromatosis using external fixators. However, there are no case series regarding the use of implantable lengthening technology. The purpose of this paper is to describe our experience with implantable nail lengthening in patients with enchondromatosis. A retrospective chart and radiographic review of patients with en

Cartilaginous dysplasias (multiple hereditary osteochondromatosis [MHO] and Ollier's enchondromatosis [OE]) are common pediatric orthopaedic conditions. Long bone growth deformities commonly develop in children with MHO and OE. The timing of procedures frequently used to treat these deformities is often dependent upon the bone age. It was the purpose of this study to investigate bone ages in a series of 40 children with MHO and OE. There were 6 girls and 9 boys with OE, and 9 girls and 16 boys with MHO. Each child's age, gender, race, and diagnosis were recorded. Hand-wrist radiographs obtaine

Ollier disease and Maffucci syndrome are rare syndromes in which there is deforming dysplasia of cartilage, primarily but not exclusively involving the metaphyses and diaphyses of long bones. In a minority of patients, dysplasia can lead to sarcomatous degeneration, producing chondrosarcomas. There also appears to be an association with other neoplasms. Little has been written about the association between Ollier disease and intracranial tumors, and these papers have largely consisted of case reports in adults. The authors present the case of a 6-year-old girl with left arm osseous changes con

OBJECTIVE: Ovarian juvenile granulosa cell tumor has an interesting association with multiple enchondromatosis (Ollier disease and Maffucci syndrome) and should be considered a leading diagnosis when an ovarian mass is found in young patients with these conditions. Besides the association with nonskeletal malignancies, there is a high risk of malignant transformation of enchondroma in chondrosarcoma as was also the case in this instance.
CASE REPORT: The report uses multiple images to document the representative and characteristic markers of multiple enchondromas in a 22-year-old patient with

Mosaic somatic mutations in the isocitrate dehydrogenase 1/2 (IDH1/2) genes have been identified in most enchondromas by targeted mutation analysis. Next-generation sequencing (NGS), that may detect even low-level mosaic mutation rates, has not previously been applied to enchondromas. Immunohistochemistry using the H09 clone is routinely used as a surrogate for the common R132H IDH1 mutation in gliomas. We compared immunohistochemistry and NGS results in a series of 13 enchondromas from 8 pediatric patients. NGS identified a heterozygous IDH mutation in all enchondromas, showing identical muta

Juvenile granulosa cell tumor (JGCT) of the ovary has been reported to occur rarely in conjunction with Ollier's disease. We report a case of a 13-year-old girl who was noted to have a large abdominal mass at the time of excision of a symptomatic enchondroma of the right femur. Subsequent laparotomy at a tertiary care children's medical center identified a JGCT confined to the right ovary. Review of the literature reveals eight previous cases of JGCT in patients with Ollier's disease. The pathophysiology and possible common causes of both disorders is discussed.
