The emerging roles of GPR158 in the regulation of the endocrine system.

G protein-coupled receptor 158 (GPR158) is a member of class C G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) and is highly expressed in the central nervous system (CNS) while lowly expressed in peripheral tissues. Previous studies have mainly focused on its functions in the CNS, such as regulating emotions, memory, and cognitive functions, whereas studies on its role in the non-nervous system are limited. It has been recently reported that GPR158 is directly involved in adrenal regulation, suggesting its role in peripheral tissues. Moreover, GPR158 is a stable dimer coupled to the regulator of G protein

Pathophysiology of the Effects of Alcohol Abuse on the Endocrine System.

Alcohol can permeate virtually every organ and tissue in the body, resulting in tissue injury and organ dysfunction. Considerable evidence indicates that alcohol abuse results in clinical abnormalities of one of the body's most important systems, the endocrine system. This system ensures proper communication between various organs, also interfacing with the immune and nervous systems, and is essential for maintaining a constant internal environment. The endocrine system includes the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid

D-Amino Acids in the Nervous and Endocrine Systems.

Amino acids are important components for peptides and proteins and act as signal transmitters. Only L-amino acids have been considered necessary in mammals, including humans. However, diverse D-amino acids, such as D-serine, D-aspartate, D-alanine, and D-cysteine, are found in mammals. Physiological roles of these D-amino acids not only in the nervous system but also in the endocrine system are being gradually revealed. N-Methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors are associated with learning and memory. D-Serine, D-aspartate, and D-alanine can all bind to NMDA receptors. H2S generated from D-cystein

The impact of endocrine disrupters on the female reproductive system.

Over the last decades, many tonnes of man-made chemicals have been produced and released into the environment. Many of these chemical substances have the ability to modulate the action of hormones and are called endocrine disrupters. Cell receptors that have been pure receptors for thousands of years have (due to industrialization), become susceptible to the action of exogenous chemicals. The balance of the endocrine system is very important in the human body especially in females because the menstrual cycle and fertility are very sensitive to hormone imbalances. This review considers the mode

[Changes in the endocrine system in the course of sulpiride therapy].

The influence of sulpiride, a neuroleptic included into the group of benzamide derivatives, upon endocrine system has been discussed in the article. It is noted that sulpiride clearly increases the evolution of prolactin in both sexes. It gives a chain of various consequences. They are, among others, impairment of gonad activity in both sexes which causes emmeniopathy and galactorrhea in women and impotence in men. The influence of hyperprolactinemia, caused by sulpiride, upon the level of testosterone in plasma and also upon the evolution of progesterone has been also discussed. The knowledge

[The endocrine function of the hypophyseal-gonadal system in varicocele].

The paper provides the evidence on interaction of the endocrine system hypophysis-gonads with varicocele. Gonadotropic hormones and sexual steroids were measured in the blood of varicocele males (47 cases) and of fertile healthy males (17 cases), testosterone in the tissue of the sexual glands and blood of white noninbred rats (40 test against 20 control animals). It was found that in 18% of varicocele patients high levels of FSH were associated with oligo-, pathospermia and changes in spermatogenic epithelium. Interstitial cell stimulating hormone did not shift above the standard in all varic

[The disseminated endocrine system of man. A contribution of pathology].

The disseminated (or diffuse) endocrine system is composed of many single cells and small groups of cells disseminated in the whole organism, capable of producing biogenic amines and polypeptide hormones. They are also called APUD cells and were first detected in the mucosa of the intestinal tract, where they occur in highest concentration. Carcinoids are tumors of disseminated endocrine cells which sometime retain their hormone-producing capacity. These hormones are key factors in the control of numerous bodily functions; some are transported by way of the bloodstream, while others probably e

Circadian Clock Regulates Epidermal Endocrine System in Homeostatic Skin Pigmentation.

The circadian clock regulates multiple physiological processes in the skin, including local hormone synthesis and pigmentation. However, how circadian regulation interacts with epidermal endocrine signalling in melanocytes remains unclear. In this study, we investigated whether core circadian regulators influence melanogenesis in human melanocytes and explored their potential link to epidermal endocrine factors and pigmentary disease. Primary normal human epidermal melanocytes were analysed following siRNA-mediated knockdown of the core clock genes basic helix-loop-helix ARNT-like protein 1 (B

Effects of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors on endocrine system (Review).

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are typically prescribed for treating major depressive disorder (MDD) due to their high efficacy. These drugs function by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin [also termed 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT)], which raises the levels of 5-HT in the synaptic cleft, leading to prolonged activation of postsynaptic 5-HT receptors. Despite the therapeutic benefits of SSRIs, this mechanism of action also disturbs the neuroendocrine response. Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity is strongly linked to both MDD and the response to antidepressants, ow

Vitamin D Endocrine System and COVID-19: Treatment with Calcifediol.

The COVID-19 pandemic is the greatest challenge facing modern medicine and public health systems. The viral evolution of SARS-CoV-2, with the emergence of new variants with in-creased infectious potential, is a cause for concern. In addition, vaccination coverage remains in-sufficient worldwide. Therefore, there is a need to develop new therapeutic options, and/or to optimize the repositioning of drugs approved for other indications for COVID-19. This may include the use of calcifediol, the prohormone of the vitamin D endocrine system (VDES) as it may have potential useful effects for the trea

Long non-coding RNAs as regulators of the endocrine system.

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are a large and diverse group of RNAs that are often lineage-specific and that regulate multiple biological functions. Many are nuclear and are essential parts of ribonucleoprotein complexes that modify chromatin segments and establish active or repressive chromatin states; others are cytosolic and regulate the stability of mRNA or act as microRNA sponges. This Review summarizes the current knowledge of lncRNAs as regulators of the endocrine system, with a focus on the identification and mode of action of several endocrine-important lncRNAs. We highlight lncRNAs

Identification of ecdysis-triggering hormone from an epitracheal endocrine system.

Developing insects repeatedly shed their cuticle by means of a stereotyped behavior called ecdysis, thought to be initiated by the brain peptide eclosion hormone. Here an ecdysis-triggering hormone, Mas-ETH, is described from the tobacco hornworm Manduca sexta. Mas-ETH contains 26 amino acids and is produced by a segmentally distributed endocrine system of epitracheal glands (EGs). The EGs undergo a marked reduction in volume, appearance, and immunohistochemical staining during ecdysis, at which time Mas-ETH is found in the hemolymph. Injection of EGs extract or synthetic Mas-ETH into pharate
